My friends rebuilt prelude motor had the same shavings. Turned out that the builder put the block together wrong and iirc it had to do with the crank bearings.

Slowly built up metal particles in the oil until the filter was clogged so bad that the oil pressure would drop off.

luckily he had some kind of warranty on the rebuild and they had to fix it all for him.

Metal in the pan and metal circulating in the oil are two different things. That's why I suggested filtering out your oil to see for sure what it is. Also, it might be more than one source of meatal - steel stuck to the plug and something else circulating. If it's aluminum it might be coming off the timing chain cover.

it's not aluminum since it's magnetized and not settling on the bottom of the oil pan.

the metal could be any number of things already mentioned, but bottom line is that the engine builder did a piss poor job of assembling the engine. i'm weary of any builder that uses magnets in a fresh assembly to collect shavings. if the oil filter can't collect all the particles that accumulate before the initail oil change, then something's wrong. period.

I took off the oil pan and took the oil filter apart and did not find any metal at all. If it was not for the magnetic drain plug I would not even know that it was metal. The engine person does not have anything to go by since there was not any evidence that the engine is having issue's.

Also I am taking off the front cover and checking the timing chains to check just incase somehow there is alum. coming from there somehow.

Don't get hung up on the metal that is stuck to the magnet. There could be more than one thing going on. Best bet is to see what is in the oil, the shavings on the plug might just be confusing things.

Uhm, the fact that there are shavings on that plug is an issue, and he needs to fix it for you. As far as shavings in the case. Check your pump. But based on pressure, and the fact that it is running, I can tell you that is not where your issue is. It is because of the builder, plain and simple.

That might be true but he needs to pin down the cause before he can assign blame. It is normal to have metal shaving after rebuilding a motor. That is why you do extra oil changes. In his case, the shavings might have just permanantly stuck to the magnet from the begining and might just be innocent bystanders.

But why guess. Put about 8oz in a pop bottle with 8oz water, shake it up and let it sit over night. The metal, if it is metal, will be on the bottm. The oil will form a layer on top of the water. Pour all this out and you will have pure clean metal shavings if that is what caused the problem. And, I would get the oil from the turbo feed so you are not anylizing the sump oil.

One would think that a bad build with grinding metal would be quite obvious. I wonder if his turbo filter + flow restrictor could be causing too much oil resistance. For that matter, how can metal flakes get by that filter?

Same way they get past the oil filter. Cut holes or slide through pores.

I agree with most everyone's opinion.... nothing is perfect, no filter catches everything and the fact that there is so much filtration on the oil system does make it odd to see metal particles on a drainplug...

I agree that looking at the sump oil is not going to give you the best idea as to why you blew your turbine.

I would however expect to see higher compression, and little to no variance between cylinders. You can find cars with over 100k on the odometer that have near perfect compression.

Those little metal shavings would be prefect to clog up your oil system, with your filter(s) clogged the turbine would obviously starve and overheat. You need to check oil pressure at the turbine and expect to find a problem in the bottom end, sounds like some rings to me, but i would tell your engine builder to figure it out. Afterall, you didn't pay them to half-@ss your motor together and let you deal with the problems that they caused!!!

Good luck, i hope it all works out for you

Well found that the turbo died of lack of oil. Which would come from the turbo oil filter I put on after the first turbo died after crap got inside. Good news is that the turbo was fixed for free and I should get it back from AMS in a few days. Now I just have to finishing taking off the crank pully to get the front cover off. I did noticed that the lower timing chain guide looks to be worn so I am replacing all the lower timing chain guides, tensioner, and chain. For some reason I did not do it when I rebuilt the engine. The engine only had about 60K on it when I blew a ring land so the timing componets all looked fine. I already replaced the top chain and guides. Since the oil pan is off it is a good time to go ahead and replace the lower.

Well it looks like everything is turning out awesome. This is a goood day for me

Good deal! I had a feeling those shavings were just a distraction.

Scientists call this "extraneous evidence." Although, they probably spell it different.

by the looks of the stuff on your drain plug which is magnetic you should be missing a fair amount of ferrous metal.Try checking the edges of the cam lobes(sometimes the come with very sharp edges the will peel off) or for a nasty distributor drive gear or gears.there are only so many iron or steel parts in the engine that can/should touch each other. timing chains and gears really should not shed much at all since they are bathed in oil
