Much has been written on the cheapest way to own a vehicle.Tough negotiation, no trade in with the dealer and paying cash is the cheapest way to go.

From age 18 to 22 I had five used vehicles and only my first a 1958 Ford happend to be a real POS

After being drafted into the US Army I purchased a 66 VW beedle brand new in Germany and everyone of my vehicles since have been brand new ever since. I had all of them for over 10 years & some had over 200k miles when I finally got rid of them.My previous five vehicles were purchased in the month of December with Christmas and New Years Eve getting me the best deals for cash. My current G was purchased 12/31/05

You guys are the best!

Last night I fiddled a little bit with the clutch adjustment. Then, this morning, I toook her out on a hard spin. This is what I discovered so far.

1. On a straightline: I have to double clutch tp get the gear to hook up and keep moving the car, when it is between 65 and 80 miles per hour. But below 60 miles per hour, the gear engages properly with no problems.

2. On my secret twisty track, the gear engages perfectly at all speeds without any issues.

So, why is the gear box compliant on a twisty road and not on a stright line? I have hypothesizd that the problem might even be the way I shift. I found out that when I don't push the lever to far into fifth it engages relatively well.

Since the parts are old and weak, is twisty roads causing some small movements or increasing the packing density to either the left or right as I fly through the twisty?

I just got back from the mechanic. He adjusted the clutch cable. he also tested the clutch to see if it is still good---and he confirms the clutch is great. Yet the car still does the same thing. But there light at the end of the tunnel.

I have concluded and confirmed that the car shifts properly into 5th gear when I am at or under 60 miles per hour. Above this, the problem is there. So, I am still happy with the little nissan eventhough I can't take it up to 70 miles per hour before shifting into 5th gear.

I still think it is your synchros. It is worn. Perhaps I think it is the way you shift. Too many spirited driving. Syncros have tendency to wear faster if you shift quicker. That's why some people have problems with syncros if they install the short shifter. Short shifter = faster shift. Think this way synchronizer ring has to stop its gear from turning in less time than if the shift was made slower. If you shift slower would it be engage the 5 th gear? Some trannies have tendency to trow out from gear when the synchros are worn. That could be next stage for your little Nissan.Just my 2 cents.

Probably somebody with more knowledge will chime in and correct me.

I think you have a point. My mechanic said my syncros maybe bad. Yes, i drove the crap out of the little nissan hoping it would break and it never did. Your theory makes sense because for the 5th gear to engage, i have to drive at or below 60 miles per hour, which is the same as slow shifting. Well, I have to live with this for the rest of the life of my little nissan. I am not prepared to buy another transmission let alone rebuild the existing one. I think any car that can last up to 250K has done its job perfectly. But you never know, if i win a lottery, I might just go ahead and replace the trans. even the engine in my car still has its original timing chain at 250k---never been replaced. One reason for this is the fresh oil that is always in the engine---i never let the oil get to 3,000 miles before replacing. Eventually, the timing chain will weaken and give way. But so far, it is still doing a good job.

In my 94 Altima GXE 5spd KA24DE, I noticed a problem when shifting, it would make a small creaking noise when shifting, it felt like it was in the shifter, I took it in to a shop and they found a few bolts to have been loosened. Tightened them up for me and it shifted like a new car, they didn't even charge me

If only I could find such service for my G35, it seems everyone's out to make a dollar off a nice car

Jacko, I worship you for telling us your model, it's the only way anyone will really be able to help!!! Good luck, and hopefully you can get it fixed up!!!! PS: my grandmother just sold her 95 Sentra, as her mechanic said, it's just not worth it... as a few chimed in earlier.

Either way, I know the car holds a dear sentiment, to you as my old altima has done to me. I have put a lot of money into my new (98) Altima GXE of 2 months, and I love it, but, it feels like it's having problems with the flywheel or engine mounts Seems to shake when taking low speed driving in low gears (1-2).

Thanks! I feel my car is coming to the very end of its useful life. To ask more form a car that has odne so much for me, would be so selfish. So, I will let her die a slow and honorable death. Thats how much she means to me.

I feel your pain Jacko, but when it comes time to say goodbye, feel overjoyed, for you are about to embark on your new "little Nissan" adventure as I did.

Not sure what you're looking for, but I've had two altima with no regrets. I think they are ideal, for someone who want's to balance a full life, in a four door sporty sedan. That said, it will be harder on gas than the sentra, as it hosts nearly a full litre more of displacement... and complete turbo kits can be acquired for under $1000.

I'm in the market for a turbo setup, because it's just so much cheaper than anything for the G, the aftermarket 1st - 2nd gen altima prices are 300% less than the G's market... likely due to lack of interest.

So, I capitalized, and seriously Jacko, this is a good thing! Time to step it up, into a new little nissan

I agree with you! I have had the same idea for a while now. One thing is sure for me---next car will be turboed.

I say go for it, I recall I was home one night, dreaming of FI on my G, and thought, I could buy another car / turbo for the price of a Turbo / SC setup for the G.

Just a thought, but I hope you find a well cared for Nissan / Infiniti with plenty of engine / internal life left. best luck Jacko!
