i dont know how fine 600 grit is, but i remember painting a few things with spray paint and we sanded it with probably 600 grit then wet sanded it with even finer sand paper. afterwards you couldn't even tell it had been sanded. it was super smooth and the paint on top stuck to it really well. wet sanding. good stuff.

good luck with it man, you'll have fun... final sanding with 600 grit should be plenty smooth enough for primer layer, then you can wetsand the primer layer by just sprayin water on the surface and sanding it lightly with the 600, dunno if it'll even be necessary...

OH and another thing, get GOOD sandpaper... get Norton sandpaper (Home Depot has it), they have an aluminum oxide based sandpaper which is claimed to be the "World's Best Sandpaper"... compared to the 3M sandpaper i had, this Norton stuff is unbelievable! doesn't clog up with bondo dust, doesn't seperate or tear easily, and sanding time i'd estimate is cut in half, I swear by this stuff.

ok here's an update... was away in italy for 7 weeks, and the second day i got back i decided to do this:

the box wouldn't fit in my hatch properly so i decided to take about an inch of depth off my hatch... went through 11 cutting discs to get the job done :pface

the aftermath of the dremel session

after another 15 hours of so of bodywork this is what i ended up with. pretty happy with it; good enough for canada :D

carbon fiber glued on and starting to layer on the resin, looks like it's gonna work out pretty good

Wow, I hope your hatch had some rust on it, cause if not you just decreased the number of "good" hatches by one .

I'm back Ayjay lol. Box is turning out nicely. Just curious you said your glued the fiber to the box? what did you use..... I tried using spray adhesive on some fiberglass cloth to hold it in place then resined over it (on my rear deck btw) and afew months later it tried to lift, the adhesive woulnd't let the resin fully bond to the surface. Not to scare you or anything. you seen my boxes in black yet?

the ports are hard as hell to wrap with CF... it's tough to get a thick enough layer of resin in there to cover the cf since it just runs down into the port... might just bondo inside the ports and then just paint the inside black, up to the edge of the port. i'm finding it too tough to defy gravity

i don't know what my goal was rex... i think i just wanted to try doing somethin different. definately not SPL with this sub amp combo... not SQ either, so i guess it was just for the install. next install won't be nearly as big.

prolly gonna go for two 12" CDT HD subs in small mdf carpeted enclosures and run them off the same U-dimension amp i got now... gonna have to find new carpet for my trunk and trim pieces that i've destroyed.

Ok, it took me 1 hour and 43 minutes to read this whole thread. I'm now sure that I will make my own box. Can you just tell me what materials you used? Much Mahalos.

no kidding. it's really hard to commit to that much work and stay dedicated over all the time it has taken. definitely giving you a thumbs up for dedication and a good job done.

i am having a hard time making just door panels because i hate working with fiberglass... it's coming along slowly but i have to wait for the weather to be fair.

Great thread man, I have been following a few fiberglass and custom audio install forums lately... This is the first good collection of pictures that I've ever seen for an s13 audio build up. I especially liked your door panels!

Keep up the good work... Also could you post a pic of your finished door panels? The pic from earlier doesn't show anymore.

Later
