Last saturday, before I called it a night errr day, I stopped by a local racing spot. There was the usual riced out Hondas racing each other and I asked what was the fastest car out there so my Fuel Slut buddys could rip them apart. Some guy pointed to a silver SRT4.

I asked the SRT4 guy if he wanted to run. He said ok after he ran a stock 02 Eclipse GT :rolleyes

He also said it was a new 04 SRT4, so I expected to get my *** handed to me.

He ran the eclipse and he came around to line up next to me while the Eclipse was nearing the end of the road to come back around.

So some random guy flags us and were off!!! I get the launch of course but I spin most of first and second thanks to my skinny 195's tires. But I still had the lead and held it for 95% of the whole way down the 1/4 mile road. I could see him creeping up on me very slowly and when we go to the end of the 1/4 road he had passed me by a fender before I had to shut down because the road curves and circles to go back to the starting point.

I was still happy though. I had him most of the way and he didnt catch up till the very end. If I had a FMIC and a decent sized turbo like he did, he would have gotten waxed for sure.

This weekend im coming out a bit more quicker. I slapped on a SR S13 turbo thats in way better condition than the CA one I was running that night. And I also slapped on a 1G DSM sidemount intercooler. Which is 2x as thick and actually faces the front of the car to catch wind instead of angled downward like the SR.

I was running 10 psi while running against the SRT4 with it spiking to 14 because of the cold weather.

This weekend I might run 12-14 :D

Good run, Kevin! Considering he has FMIC from factory and possibly a few pounds lighter as well as his engine being bigger in displacement and produce more power in stock form (not making any excuses), I'd say you did damn good.

Wow, I'm impressed. I didn't think the CA had that much stock, even on 10psi. There is nothing slow about an SRT-4, especially sine the '04s come with an LSD stock.

Those things are crazy. I'm kinda impressed with dodge on this one. The only thing I'm not impressed with is the Hp. Does anybody know what kind of boost it's running? I mean, these cars make 230whp. But if you turbo a KA you get 240hp+. I also didn't realize until last night that they are all wheel drive. It's like wow, this is a decent platform, but then you realize it's a neon.....

they AREN'T AWD, they're FF, who told you that **** and bull story?

They're running 7-10 IIRC, probably closer to 7.

And what I find REALLY ammusing is that this engine was developed to help PT Cruiser sales. Yet no one has given a flying **** about the new PT Cruiser 2.4L Turbo. <<that's another car you gotta watch out for. IMO, I'd much rather have one of the future PT Cruiser 'verts w/ a 2.4L Turbo than a neon

The SRT4 have 4 lb actuator springs and the solenoid lets it get up to 11-14 psi. I think this is for the 03 model. Dont know about the 04. (SRT4 forums)

The weight on them is ~2950. which is 400 more than me :D

One guy weighed his at 3025 (SRT4 forums)

But if the car I raced was truely a 04, then the driver needs more practice. But a kill is a kill :icesangel

But if he lied and it is an 03 then I can understand why it took so long to catch up. Even after my crappy launch :pface

And the engine might not be broken in since it's new unless he's had if for a while.

I didn't think they were either, but a friend of mine swears he found someplace that says they were. I called bullshniky and he sent me the link. Only now I can't find it. I still was leery as to the validity of it, but he seemed pretty convinced. I'll try and find the link again.

I promise they're FWD. I've never seen or heard of an AWD SRT4 purpose built or not. Even the Rally SRT4s race in the FWD class.

I would love to line up with one of them and that mazda protege thinga-majiggy. I mean, I'm no mazda lover, but that protege looks pretty tight. I would just roll-up with the sentra, make sure the limo-tinted windows are up, never rev the motor, bring my revs up to about 6000 and leave them behind looking stupid like WTF:spank

Im one step ahead of ya, Dee. I ran a Mazdaspeed Protege from a 1st gear roll and I wiped the floor with him.

The RX8 is next on my hitlist.

mazda speed protege aren't all that fast stock, my freind has an orange one, i think they run like mid 15's stock. something rediculously slow for a turbo car.

technically yea, but I had him the whole way and he had to play catch up. And he was catching up very slowly and got me only at the very end where I had to brake or miss the curve and crash my car.

And my spinning 1st and part of 2nd didnt help much either.

Dont know. When he raced the Eclipse GT he bogged. Didnt look like he bogged racing me, but he probably did spin also.

When we launched and I was spinning he was at my door, then I caught grip for 2nd and I put a car on him. 2nd gear my rear end wiggled a bit then caught traction again.

That car is so horribly designed it's not even funny. They used the stock long block from the regular Protege and just stuck a T-25 and SMIC on it. Only about 1/4 of the side mount even gets air, and the car is notorious for overheating. Plus you're seriously limited by what the weak block can handle. Gag..

Quote »That car is so horribly designed it's not even funny.[/quote] Are you referring to the car itself or it's powerplant? I honestly think it's a nice looking car and I'm a pretty tough critic when it comes to appearances of automobiles.

it also handles phenomenally! its not the fastest thing out there, but there is alot of suspension/body/interior/audio goodness in there:) but sadly the powerplant is lacking...

ive beaten 2 different evo 8s, of course the drivers of the cars could screw up racing freaking automatics if they wanted. wasnt too spectacular, i ran a slightly lower 14 thn either of them did. but like the mad scientist said, a kill is a kill. i love horrible drivers..unless they hit me or something. good job with the srt-4, youll kill him this weekend. as for the mazdaspeed protoge, i think they look nice and seem to be well built but i have heard bad things about the engine.

I am a salesman at Mazda here in my city

The MPS Protege is no fast car, but what it does is handle. Any review you read will tell you the engine is really lacking. And its true, the engine blows... its jittery... very high strung. Feels just like a half assed turbo job on the regular 2.0L should. But it will outhandle any car in its class: SVT Focus, SRT-4 and the Spec-V Sentra.

The RX8 however... is a superb machine... very well balanced. As fast in a straight line as a 350Z, but has much more linear steering and you feel very connected. You could pull low 14s with it - which is not great... but the potential is there :)
