First of all, thank you for your service.
Second as for advice, save your $$$$. I tell everyone to put aside at least $10,000 if you want to do an LS swap. There are a ton of variables in doing a swap and there are plenty of people out there that will tell you that you can do it way cheaper but after having done several LS swaps in various cars I can tell you that $10,000 is a much more realistic number to start at.
The other bit of advice I would give is to plan for doing the Q45 rear end swap. Also plan for at least a 300ZX twin turbo brake upgrade front and rear. The stock 4.08 rear gears pretty much makes 1st gear in the T56 useless. Even with the 3.54 gears most of the time I would start in 2nd. The larger hubs and axles you need with the Q45 rear also are much stronger and will give you less issues. The OEM brakes on these cars are horrible and no where near safe enough with LS power. I did the 300ZX upgrade and spaced the front calipers out so I could use the larger 350Z front rotors. My car would stop on a dime.
Oh one other thing. If you live in a warm climate get some serious cooling setup. You need a really good aftermarket radiator, and if you can fit it put something like the Ford Taurus cooling fan on. It moves 5000 cu ft/ min of air. I had an ongoing issue of heat soak while idling here in south Georgia. The problem was that the heat from the engine sort of gets trapped in the engine bay. A vented hood would help but the more air that you can "pressurize" the engine bay to push the hot air out, the better.
Other than that, keep your head down and come home safe!
