Retirement would only suck if my body couldn't keep up with me. I find myself more happy when totally slammed with activity. Idle hands would make me feel dull and lead to drinking too much and eating bad foods and such, so I think I understand your tendency to be busy...

^ Same here. I like to think I'd take up wood working. Whittling ducks and such.

Morning fellas.
Any big plans for the long weekend? Couple of fantasy drafts here, pretty clear after that!

Mornin' Ray.

I think if I were retired i'd probably still be doing stuff with cars mainly. Flipping cars, restoring cars, and ect.

I'm supposed to go to TOTD this weekend. I've got some stuff going on around here at the moment though, so i'm not sure if i'm gonna be able to stay the whole weekend now.

So I started shopping for a head gasket set last night and I think i'm gonna go with Flyin' Miata's gasket set. It comes with a much better steel head gasket and everything you need for $240. It's a little more than a standard gasket set, but it seems like it's a much better package for the money.

I didn't know they sold that kit. Honestly, thats a pretty good deal, all things considered. No piece meal, no worries (though I usually don't have any) that Rock Auto might send you the wrong gasket, etc. My suggestion is to pull the trigger on it.

Even if you don't make the whole weekend at TOTD, you'll still enjoy the hell out of it. If it weren't a big weekend with the lady's family, I'd be there, too. Is it just too long a ride for you in the Miata with the oil leak, or is there another reason you aren't bringing it?

I'll probably pull the trigger on it in a few weeks. No need to buy it right now since I won't be doing it until winter gets here.

Yeah, i'm just in a discouraged mood right now and am not very excited about going anywhere. Lots of stuff with work going on, lots of stuff to be done around the house, and now i've got a lot more unexpected expenses. I'll still go, i'm just not enthused about it right now.

Yeah that's basically why i'm not taking the Miata. I just don't trust driving it 4+ hours with a sketchy oil leak. I don't feel like something is right about it right now too - it just doesn't seem like it's running right. I'd rather not get stuck there and have to figure out how to get it back home.

The stuff around the house will be there when you return but you can't say the same about NICOnauts at TOTD. Jus' sayin'.

probably the most depressing reoccurring thought i have. there's so many times i say "i should've bought a condo", but then i remember that condos have rules.

The killer for condos in my book is sharing walls with other condos. It's one thing having to put up with sharing walls (and hearing your neighbors) when renting an apartment. But there's no way in Hell I'm BUYING a home that has those issues. Same for multiplexes.

Depends on what you have in the wall between you and your neighbor. If they cheaped out on building materials, they shouldn't be selling it for a premium price. The problem is that people don't care or don't check on these kind of things when they buy a condo. s***, if I bought one, I'd probably rip out the walls and rebuild it the right way. Then again, I'd have to find the one place that would let me do that, right? Ugh. How can they tell you what you can or can't do in YOUR place?

Gotta be careful with the single family homes too. Some are lumped together with "HOA's", which can be just as ornery, annoying, and restrictive as a townhome/row home or condo (with attached walls to your neighbors)

My wife and I rented a 1st floor apartment before we married. The walls plenty were thick enough, but we had Godzilla and King kong living upstairs. Very heavy footed walkers. I guess that motivated us to seek a single family house. Lotsa land is a bonus, but more challenging economically here in the northeast, as property values are high.

^ Renting a s*** 100+ y/o house will do that, too. We're looking forwards to the day we can have something nicer.
But I agree, condos suck! I abhor the idea of sharing walls, lawns, or other stupid restrictions and compromising my life for my neighbors. Not to the point that I'd be a pain in the a** to them, but more that I have enough sense to know it isn't for me and I'll never subject anyone else to putting up with my crap either.

Ownership would be nice, but I'd have to move somewhere else or be willing to drive 2 hours + to afford anytime soon. I won't purchase anything on credit either, the future isn't as solid as I'd like it to be.

Mornin' Ray!

Looks like I get to spend the weekend getting our house ready to go on the market. I had a meeting with the VP yesterday and signed all of my paperwork for my new position at work. I scored a pretty decent pay raise, but i'm having to switch over to salary now and start working 45 hrs per week compared to 40 hrs right now. No complaints about that though.

It's officially official now, so looks like we'll be spending the weekend getting our house ready to put on the market. Gotta get it sold ASAP.

so i'm sitting at my desk getting a head start on some orders for next week and the phone rings. i answer it and get the automated message about a merchant visa blah blah blah. i wait for the option to be removed from the call list, realize that such option isn't available so i instead opt to speak to someone. a girl answers and i politely say "hi, i just connected to ask that you kindly remove us from your call list". to which she replies "i have good news and bad news. the good news is there's no list. the bad news is there's no list. hee hee". click, dial tone. that giggle at the end had a very maniacal tone to it.

wtf just happened? have these people just gone bat s*** insane?

Awesome Chris! Glad the waiting is over and you scored big! No TOTD for you this weekend, eh?
Either way, pretty soon you can get the Barbie Dreamhouse for the women in your life.

Sounds like that girl is fiesty, Tito. Should've asked her to call again.

I got sick of Unity in Ubuntu and have been bouncing from DE to DE for a week or so. I think I've settled on KDE, but I'm liking Mate quite a bit as well. I have yet to try Cinnamon but I have heard good things about it. Only problem is, since installing Mate, their greeter screen has taken over, displacing the much more functional Unity greeter.

But, in regards to KDE:

Good morning. I just got a jury duty summons for federal court. Hopefully I'll break my tradition of ending up on juries every time I get jury duty on the county level.

Terminator? wut

SO you're saying that ctrl+alt+t doesn't bring up the terminal? That's weird. All my other geeky friends are moving to Gentoo.

Yeah, there was no default ctrl+alt+T (or any other) shortcut for a terminal. There's a goofy desktop-GUI-integrated "enter a command" window that pops out of the top of the desktop, but that's no stand-in for a terminal.

Terminator's my go-to terminal emulator. It's customizable and allows for multiple separate panes within the main terminal window. I like it because it means I don't have to chase down 5 different terminal windows while juggling tasks. It also has horizontal scrollbar support rather than text wrap, which really helps readability and formatting when returning longer strings.

I've considered switching to a geekier distro, but the reality is much of my geekiness is in support of my gaming habit. Steam likes Ubuntu, so that's where I'll stay (at least for my primary OS). I've run a bunch of others on a Raspberry Pi, but that's not really a good measure since everything has to trim down so much to work on it. What I need is a "throwaway" laptop that's fairly recent (2010 or newer) that I have no attachment to so I can fart around with various OSes.

I just upgraded to the most recent FiOS router, it's the exact same router as before, but it has 2.4 GHz. I mean, WOW.
I had to pay money to get this crap, and it's not even the highest speed available for wifi. 5 GHz has been out for a minute, and they still get away with charging for this. Also, it is visibly faster bringing up many of the pages I frequent. This means I was being charged for internet speeds that I couldn't use. I am shocked! (no, I'm not)

In my experience- Craigslist the 1-3 days before the show. The downside is that in some cases you'll have to go get them. However, in most cases, its easy enough to email you the link.

Who are you trying to go see?

Live music is WAY expensive these days. If a popular artist is preforming and the tickets for decent seats is over $110 for 2 tickets, I don't even bother. I mean, unless it was an epic show like Billy Joel or something like that.

in october: aussie pink floyd
in december: slipknot/korn/king 810

the cheapest i've seen so far for pre-sale of the slipknot show is 75, and that requires some type of membership with fan clubs, and it's pit area. i used to love pits, but since the wrist injury i've shied away. plus standing for a couple of hours breathing in everyone else's sweaty mouth exhaust while being forced to sway and get stomped on by jumping people, all while avoiding getting sucked into a pit isn't as much fun as it used to be.

the cheapest for floyd is a bit more than 50 for the upper deck. they try and re-create the visual theatrics of an original floyd show, so i don't want to be too close, but against the back wall isn't all that desirable to me either.
