Problem solved.

And by "problem" I mean "everything".

Gaff tape > duct tape.
Isn't "Gaff tape" aka Gaffer tape, just British slang for duck tape?

Nothing British about it to my knowledge (the term or the tape). But no, it's not the same as duct tape.

Gaff tape is typically a black cloth tape that works great as long as moisture isn't anywhere near it when you apply it. It tends to unravel when wet.

I use it to repair broken headlight brackets and mend broken plastic pieces on friends' cars. I'm the guy who always gets that "I got into an accident" call at 10PM, somehow.

Cool, never seen that stuff before, but sounds useful.

I got the British thing from Top Gear, where they always seem to refer to duck tape as "Gaffer tape" or at least that's what it sounds like they're saying.

That's not duct tape. It's white gaffer tape. Comes in lots of colors.

Gets its name because it's used by gaffers (the film/stage term for electricians) which is where I became familiar with it.

The best thing about gaff tape is that, when you remove it, it doesn't leave goo all over everything.

Really, if any water is near it, it's completely useless. That's the difference. Duct tape will take to a moisty misty day and still work, but this stuff will appear to hold, and then just unravel and come off. That's why you need both in your fix it kit.

I was stressing out about one of my classes because I had some freshman couple who couldn't stay civil with each other for more than a week.
Thankfully it worked out and we got a good grade on our big group assignment.

Yeah, but Ian doesn't beatbox whilst playing it all. Not that it makes him any less awesome either, tho. ;)

True. Though his frantic gasps for breath during his flute solos sometimes come close to beatboxing...if by accident.

Also I have no idea what your new avatar is (I mean clearly it's a cartoon shark, but...). But I like it.

Lately my auto enthusiast side seems to come out in spurts. Anyone else suffer from this affliction? My BMW is pretty solid in factory form, so I don't really have an urge to work on it. My 240 on the other hand needs new suspension, some new bushings in the rear, the stereo is inop, I have R32 GTS-t wheels sitting in the garage that need rubber on them...needs paint...I could go on but I cry a little bit inside as the list gets longer.

I hate being on base, I have no damn room in my garage to set up anything and it's full of big wheels, bikes and other assorted crap that I have to relocate to the front yard just to pull the car in. f***!!!

Yeah, I'm getting bored of the thought of working on my car.
Though, once I crawl under there, I enjoy it.

I need to hunt down and take care of the annoying rattles I got going behind the dashboard, it's driving me up the damn wall.

I lost the desire to work on cars for a while, then the Maxima got me back into it again. If something needs to be done, I don't mind digging in and doing it if I have the time. There are times I will just take it to my mechanic though and let him get it done while i'm at work, so I guess mine comes in spurts too.

I think i'm in a similar place though B - The thought of big projects just make me groan. When I have a long list of things to work on with a car, I just grow frustrated and put it off at times. I don't mind working on cars, but I hate doing things that are going to take me more than a day to complete. I do want another project though, because I enjoy working on something a lot more when I don't have to also drive it everyday.

Same here. I bought the LS so I'd have a car I can enjoy out-of-the-box. The list of stuff I'd like to fix is short, and some of it is unrealistic:
1: Pegleg. Realistic but reliable info is tough to find.
2: Torque converter. Yeah...sadly it's not going anywhere.
3: Sway bars. I don't even know if anyone makes them, but I'd like a bigger one out back and a smaller one up front. Just enough to eliminate the very-slight forward handling bias to compliment the magnificent weight distribution.
4: Wheels/tires: something with 5 clean spokes and room for 255+ wide rubber all around. Easy to do...just not very cheap.
5: Exhaust. Sound is brilliant but so quiet. I want MOAR. Cheap and easy.

And that's it. That's all I care to change.

A simple way to get a bit more stiffness out of your swaybars is to cut the ends shorter and weld it back on. Basically like moving the swaybar link a hole back on an adjustable swaybar.
No idea if that sort of solution would work on the LS's suspension.

You can also lengthen the arm to gain more leverage and make it softer.

Do any cars share the same platform as the LS?

Lots. Thunderbird is basically a 2-seat convertible LS. But not much aftermarket there, either. S-type shares the platform but I'm not sure how much of the suspension carries over. XF also shares the platform but from what I understand it uses XK suspension stuff so probably no compatibility there.

Do you guys like working on cars by yourself or do you do better if you have someone else in there helping you out? For me, it depends on who I'm working with. If it is something I detest, like chasing wiring, I prefer to be by myself so I don't get distracted. Greg and I tend to get a lot done together but I've seen other people come over to "help" and three hours later, the two of them are still standing BESIDE the car talking about it. :chuckle:

Damn that sucks.

It depends for me too. I like working with my dad on big jobs like messing about with the drivetrain, messing with the intercooler and stuff. But for the most part, I like working by myself, mainly on easy stuff or stuff that takes a lot of fiddling about, like the suspension.
