Among off-the-shelf premium oils: Mobil1 15w-50 in summer and Mobil1 0w-40 in winter OR the German castrol 0w-30 (=0w-35) described in this thread.

If you are willing to go to super premium oils, Redline in their 50 weight for summer and 5w-40 /0w-40 as a winter oil.

The AMSOIL series 2000 is also among the very best in similiar weights.

Boutique oils like Castrol Formula RS 10w-60 (at BMW dealers), Shell helix Ultra are also available but the extra expense is in no relation to (possible) benefits.

And finally when on a budget:Summer : Chevron Supreme 20w-50 for $1.14 at Walmart, great oil for the money and in 10w-30 for winter.

ok fred, i have a few questions for you. 1)i heard that quaker state and pennzoil are the same company now selling the same oils and filters under different names. is this true?2)clarification of something else i heard. GL5 = good for hypoid gears and diffs. supposedly has enough lsd additives that you dont need any extra. is this right?3)more clarification. GL4 = good for manual trans due to less extreme presure additives. supposedly they eat up sycros and blocker rings. please truth check that for me.4)fred stamp of approval? sr20det brake in = gtx 10w30(soft driving not fresh motor), summer fill in va = M1 15w50, winter fill either the rebadged slx or maybe redline 10w40, 5sp redline mt-90, rear diff with kaaz lsd = either mobil one gear oil or redline shockproof, rear end require special kaaz oil(expensive stuff)?

hey fred, thanks for being so patient with us all. i appreciate your willingness to share the info over and over again when the same questions are asked multiple times. you are inspiring me to be more patient with people on the rare occasion that i know what im talking about.

1) Essentially yes, but the base stock is certainly the same ut we arent sure if the addiitves are exactly the same yet. What is certain is that they are roughly similiar. It appears bottling is still done at diferent locations, even though much refining is shared.2) I think GL5 is sufficient by itself and thats all I've used <but> some smart people her disgree and Q45tech always adds a friction modifying additive. If I remember when I refill ,I will likely do it as well, but last couple times I forgot and am not too worried about it, but it pays to follow Dennis' guidance on those matters.3) There are diferent clutches many of which require completly diferent fills. from GL4 to 10w-30 motor oil to brake fluid. SO it really depends on what your manufcaturer tells you, its not like reciprocating internal combustion engines that are all roughly similiar.4)GTX is fine, I actually like Chevron Supreme even a bit better due to a group II+ base stock used. And its cheaper too, but you cant go wrong with GTX for sure.As for your winter fill. its due a bit to your local climate ( your location isnt shown) but the rebadged SLX is a great choice for sure, also the M1 0w-40. The redline 10w-40 wouldnt be my first choice from RL, I am pretty sure they make a 5w-40 as well, which would be my winter oil pick, if the winter isnt too harsh.

But a northern winter, the best fit would be SLX 0w-30 or M1 0w-40, IMO among off-the-shelf oils.

About you last sentence I am not real clear on it you are asking me what a KAAZ fill should be? I dont know enough about those difs to make a competent recommendation...:oface
