The thing that they plugged into on the plane was what kicked them back into the plane because it was on a 10 hour timer, 'member? Which was the purpose of being on the plane to LAX to begin with.

The Van was only the kick for the 2nd level. The third-level kick was the explosives in the hotel.
Kicks go like this:
Eames Defibrillates Fischer and blows up the snow fortress, bringing Ariadne and Fischer back to the third level with everyone else (the snow fortress)
Then, Arthur blows the charges in the Hotel, bringing everyone back to the second level (the hotel, his own dream)
Then the van hits the water, bringing everyone out to the first level.
At that point, they have to wait for the sedative to wear off and for the machine to wake them at the end of the flight. Since the time dilation effect isn't very strong on the first level, that's not a real problem.
And Cobb and Saito kill themselves in Limbo, which brings them back to the real world since the sedative has worn off by then.

Yeah, that was the final "kick," except that it wasn't really a kick. The machine is what they use to regulate first-level dreamtime...during the scenes where Cobb and Arthur are training Ariadne, they always just wake from the machine's timer running out. Same with the people in Yusuf's basement. Same with Cobb going off to his own place. That's how they wake in the plane.

Then, if that's the case, why wasn't the next inception, the snow fortress, also skewed with everyone floating everywhere? The Dreamer, which was the Forger (who was pretty sexy) was also in the falling van. So therefore, his inner ear equilibrium would have been messed with too, right?
It gets diluted as you go down levels from the "source" of the disturbance. Whatever's happening to your "source" body for that particular dream level is felt strongly in the dream. But since stuff is happening to a body one or two or three levels detached, everything's diluted. The inner-ear function necessary for the kick to work is specific to THAT level of dreamer. So inner-ear function of the top-level real-world dreamers only strongly affects the 1st level. 1st level dreamers' ear function only really affects 2nd level dream, etc. Which is why you need individual kicks (aside from the whole time dilation thing).

There is something that I'm still questioning. While I'm not so jaded with movies that I need everything explained, I do like SOME feasability to minor details, or lack thereof. The technology wasn't explained, which I'm fine with. The plot is strong enough as is. However, how they were all able to actually meet in someone's dream(s) should have been slightly touched on. Unless I missed something, there was only tubes for the sedation coming from the terminal, and were attached to everyone's lower arm/wrist. There was nothing leading to their heads; no wires, no electrodes. So where is the connection?? Was there some sort of device in the terminal that wirelessly harnessed their brainwwaves? Or was the connection on a psychic level? Perhaps some sort of ESP or telephaty? Even if there had been a simple wire leading to an electrode patch on their temple, I wouldn't have given it any thought. I'm wondering if Nolan was vague on a lot of things so as to leave room for a prequel, besides all of the theories and discussions it's generated.

My take was that this ties in with the Architect's job, and the fact that all the dreamers are already familiar with the "level" before they enter the dream. Maybe it's a designed aspect (sort of like a spawn point) or a matter of choice (since the dreamers are aware they're dreaming). But that raises new questions, such as why they started out so far away from the snow fortress. But then again, supposedly the creation of the secure facility is what causes the mind to lock away its secrets there, so it's possible that cheating that security could undermine its purpose...you have to go along with it for it to work.

Not sure if this is what the "diluted" topic is about but, in between dreams time passes dramatically slower in the 1st dream when you enter the 3rd dream.

So maybe the slowing of time has an effect on the equilibrium. Because they are moving left or right so slowly the affect in the 3rd dream isn't noticeable?
