DSSA wrote:This is rediculous. There are TT kits out for Chevy SB 350s too. Does that mean it's a great motor? I can easily build a turbo kit for a Rabbit GTI as well. So with that logic, Rabbit GTI=Z33?? When I consider a car's motor having good "mod-ability" I think of things such as the 2JZ, 4G63, SR20DET, Buick Turbo 6, RB26DETT, FD engines, etc.--those that you can effectively double and even triple output without practically redesigning the whole motor.

Perhaps, you might want to respond in that particular thread to that effect instead of (especially with you being a moderator) hi-jacking this one?

I see you declined to debate more there, now you bring it up here. Is it because quite a few other people in that thread were agreeing with what I said, and you felt as if it were a personal slam against you? This is the *internet*. No need to tie up a noose-knot just because someone doesn't agree with you.

To be perfectly honest, just because you have moderator status don't think I'm going to kiss your *** and treat you any differently than anyone else on this forum unless it has to do with violation of an establish rule. So stop acting like a child with a gun, and trying to hide behind your moderator status.

Again, you waste your time telling me where and how to respond. Add to this, you still cannot prove your position about the SRT4. Email me your proof. Call me. How about YOU respond in that thread?? You still haven't responded to my question, but instead danced around it. Step up and prove me wrong, that FWD is better than RWD for performance. You still haven't addressed my post in that thread with any facts, so I will continue to wait for your response. I won't be getting one, not a fact based response, anyway.

You proved another point for me. This is the internet, and maybe if I disagree about the SRT4 that you think is such a great "performance" car, then you should NOT stoop to name calling. Rise above it. Walk away, if you can't deal with my opinion. Are you really this obsessive about your role here? You really need to turn off your computer, and step back, if you're going to continue with your insults.

Your comments quickly turn to childish, lacking conviction, and are unneeded on NICO. You don't have to kiss my ***, but you will respect the rules you agreed to when registering as a member...or you will NOT be welcome here.

Finally, I am not hiding behind any status. If your cheap insults continue, those posts will be removed. NICO has no room for people who would attack and insult, instead of proving their position logically.

so smith... is swaying the topic of the forum what a moderator should be doing? I mean if you want to talk about the other thread why not do it over there? I don't know about this srt thread and don't really care, that's why i'm in this thread....

And back to the topic:wasn't the 240sx among the most powerful for it's price range and class? I mean, I don't know figures but i'd say it was competing with fwd celicas, eclipses (non awd), probes, maybe 4 cyl mustangs, mx6, preludes, and the older imprezas rs no? I mean most of these cars were less powerful and fwd (not that it's particularly bad, but you know).

Chingon, you are correct. You don't know about the srt thread, but the link above will take you to it. Enjoy! DSSA, I'll debate you on the issue through any means you see fit, as mentioned above. Email me, catch me on AIM, post in the other thread. Lets hear your facts on that issue, and lets please get back to the issue at hand: why you think the 3.5v-6 suffers from a lack of power, and why it "lacks mod-ability."(to use your words)

Can you post up power numbers of the Z33 rival cars(v6 RWD sports coupe or similar) and tell me what power numbers you can expect from engine modifications on these rival cars? Any documentation would be good, too.

THAT would be an accurate defense of your position on this issue.

When the 240SX came out, as far as performance went, the 240sx was competitive IF you compared base 4 cyl model to base 4 cyl model. Unfortunately most of Nissan's competitors developed and offered hotter versions of their competing models that Nissan chose not to do in the US, despite offering it in Japan. Its a shame. (I think Nissan would have had a sales success like the WRX had they chosen the more powerful motor for the 240, but that's hindsight).

Anyway, Ford offered a V6 into its Probe, and a 5.0 liter V8 in the Mustang. Mistu offered a turbocharged AWD version of the Eclipse (very fast car), Now look at Nissan: The top line 240sx, the SE, was simply a heavily optioned version with the same base motor. The "performance option" not much more than a foam spoiler and alloy wheels. There was no real performance upgrade. The 240's handling/chassis and RWD were its strengths, but there's no question it came up short with stock engine power. The lack of grunt didn't stop me from buying a new 240sx in 1989 and thoroughly enjoying it. It's still a great car.

Wow. I'm truely impressed. You've been a 240 owner since they originated in '89.

I wonder how many other people (if any) can make that same claim. :)

Yeah, I'm sure there a couple of original owner nuts like me still out there. I owned it for about 14 years and kept it essentially stock. I used it as a good weather commuter, though I did use it at many Audi club track events. As a track car, it was fondly labelled a "rolling Chicane" by my Audi friends, though I preferred to call it a "momemtum" car. (snicker) I just sold it a few months ago to a fellow NICO member through the B/S/T section, and he seems to be enjoying it as much as I did.

hmm I think that article makes since, don't know what the f*** the complaints are for? I think its great that they ran an article on the new Sentra and the developement going into it.

The Nissan 240sx is a great car, but nothing compared to the Integra and turbo AWD DSM variants back in the day

It IS a watered down version. Crap is admittedly too strong a sentiment. however the car is modified & detuned for sale in the us.

I bring this up, because in the post i quoted from DSSA talks about why the 240 is crappy/did bad becasue it was released in a modifed/detuned from.

Its not alll that much detuned. (If any)

The both (in us and japan) have 276 horsepower. I don't know waht else could be detuned.

How is the EVO "watered down"?

Since it's the same driveline as the Japanese spec models, with addtion of DOT approved bumpers, lighting, and emissions I don't see where you're getting that from.

Being a Mitsu "enthusiast" and actually working for them, it somewhat surprises me that I have no urge to buy an EVO. However, they were intentionally not "watered-down".

With exception of the parts needed to pass US safety/emissions codes, the car is the same as its Japanese counterpart.

If you're talking about the AYC/ACD controls that the Japanese versions offer, realize that there are versions of the EVO over in Japan that don't come with these as well.

When they decided to introduce the car to the US market, they brought over several Japanese market EVOs, and simply modified them to meet US code. The release date was even pushed back about 3 times (months at a time), one of them due to them trying to figure out how to make the front end do well enough in crash tests without modifying the FMIC, and having to detune the car.

My biggest complaint is that this model (VIII) is larger/heavier than the earlier versions. However, this has been a trend throughout the life of this car's production run--each model revision found it more and more portly. I'd still love to have an EVO III/IV.

it is my understanding that a center-differential and ACD are not at all available on us spec models. I would say that this modifies the car, and would put at at a disadvantage to its JSPEC counterpart.

lol that change is what puts you to say "watered down piece of crap"

That hardly compares to what happened to the 240sx

The center differential is the ACD (Active Center Differential).

As I stated in my above post, this isn't a matter of "detuning" this is a matter of options. A lot of the EVO VIII versions over in Japan don't come with these features either. Only the GSR version in Japan has these. A lot of people were hoping not to have the US version come with these. Their additional weight and cost are often times viewed in a negative manner.

I would probably be more interested in an EVO if they brought over the RS version (roll up windows, less "gadgets"--less weight).

Either way, although it's not "watered down", I surprisingly have no real interest in the car.

I'm sorry, i think it is a vital & useful feature that would have given the car a CLEAR edge over the WRX in this country.

I know that if i had the money, i would choose WRX over EVO (that is just personal opnion tho).. now maybe if the evo had a function that the wrx didnt..

That's why people choose different cars for different reasons. The ACD is most time disabled in Japan if racing the car.

However, these small changes are hardly a comparison to the SR/KA differences between the 240SX/Silvias,

DSSA: do happen to know Dan Hurwitz of Mach V Motorsports? (DSM tuner). I wasn't all that crazy about Evo's until he took me for a ride in his stock Evo8. Whoa. If that car was "watered" down, I like h2o. Very fun.

They are however, changes that will affect the sales of the car. I appologize if you two feel i was too harsh, but it is a big enough change for me to not buy the EVO.

also remember, nissan had the sales of its flagship to think about. why offer a car that could compete preformance wise for 10-15k less?

Yes, I know Dan. He used to buy a lot of his parts off of me in the past. Very nice guy.

Where did you run into him at?

I had a hunch with your knowledge of DSM that you two knew each other. He goes to many of the same Audi schools that I do. MachV is a Potomac chapter sponsor. I had dinner with him at the last event at VIR. Real nice guy, very knowledgeable and very quick on the track. I'm sure I'll see him at Summit Point Raceway next month. Small world.

Yeah, i sent in some h8 mail too ;)

You went and thuroughly pissed off a LOT of people with the following statement...

"You have to forgive Nissan for its early 1990s transgressions: 4000-pound 300ZX convertibles, the 240SX and the like."

Granted we got kyked on the 240 motor wise, but its still a *****in' car.

http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....34040

Above is a link of many would be fans of your magazine, who, i guarentee, many of them will never touch your magazine again.

One such post on that board (yes, its a nissan board) was:

"they call the 240 crap, but praise ricers with pepboys wings and coffe can mufflers."

As you can see, opinions are lowered a bit now. I dont want to rag at all, just point out a big problem that can and prolly will result from a simple statement you guys made.

"i mean when i read that it just didnt make sense. They have articles in this months issue that pertain to 240's and a while back they had almost an entire issue dedicated to them. They need stop and smell the naws"

Irony is your friend.

But ethnic slurs are not your friend. "Kyked" pretty much guaranteed that your good letter will not get printed. If you want a letter to the editor taken seriously, you should keep the language clean...
