The investigation into the shooting rampage outside a Tuscon grocery store that killed six people and left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords clinging to life centers around one man - 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, authorities said.

Officials said the suspect, currently in custody, used a Glock 9mm pistol equipped with an extended magazine to carry out the attack, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr. There is no word on the number of rounds fired. Authorities are currently tracing the weapon to find out who owns it and where it was purchased.

"The gunman began just spraying everybody at point blank range. It wasn't like he was picking people out, he just began shooting at everybody who was close to him and kind of a constricted area," Dr. Steven Rayle, who witnessed the shooting and offered medical attention to the victims, told CBS News.

Rayles said the suspect "had a determined look on his face. And he just began shooting, wearing dark clothes, a little bit … shabbily dressed, and he really, I think, … thought he would be getting away."

A person at the scene, possibly one of Giffords' aides, tackled the suspect, Rayles said.

A federal law enforcement official tells CBS News that police and federal agents are still investigating the possibility that others may have been involved in the attack, but so far, the probe centers on a single shooter. Multiple search warrants are being served in the investigation, said Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman Rick Kastigar.

22 year old, typical, just as they act in vehicles. I believe he was paid. There were some high motives to this. No way this 22 year old would of had that much grievance.

Or, it was coincidence and the dude is a nutter. I don't see how a 22 year old's driving habits have anything to do with this either, f*** weirdo.

This is a dumb statement. Driving a car and shooting up a place have nothing to do with each other. Plus...Your only 23, Its not like you have a huge age difference. :slap:

Checking in! Would you mind fixing that Scorched? :)
Thank you Scorched!!! Err, Aud.

The word filter was reset when we switched servers. The curse words and its variants are being added as they're spotted, but please don't slack on watching your language. We're still filling in the pieces many pieces of what our huge forum used to have. :chuckle:

This has been all over the news out here all day long. Latest reports say that the representative WAS his primary target. The bullet went completely through her brain. Miraculously, she is communicating with the doctors. Last report on the radio said that the death toll was up to 6, including that little girl who had just joined the student council at school and was interested in politics. There is nothing more horrible than the senseless death of a child. There is a special place in hell for that son of a b****.

This just adds to my argument that there is absolutely nothing good about tucson. Let's just burn down the entire city along with all of its occupents and be done with it.

Nice. There was little mention of the two heroes that tackled the wacko preventing him from doing more harm. It would be nice to get an explanation from the loser followed by a swift hanging, but that's not how our legal system works. Unfortunately, he'll probably plead insanity and get 3 square meals a day plus private room in an air conditioned mental institution at taxpayer expense for the next 20 years, which is also a crime.

I thought the media coverage was excessive and awful. the Today show did a lame interview with someone who met him briefly in school. They kept fishing even after she said she barely knew him, and hadn't seen him in over 3 years (Sheesh). I wanted my 5 minutes back.

I'm afraid as to what this whole thing could do to gun laws. I bet people will use this as an example of why citizens shouldn't have firearms. :tisk:

...and that argument will end as it always has:

Banning firearms won't do a bit of good. Murder has been banned for millenia - See how that turned out.

This is a mental health issue. Somewhere, somehow, someone wasn't paying attention.

Possibly. It's almost guaranteed that if a citizen gets murdered by a gun carrying individual pretty much nothing happens other than just a bunch of internet arguments. Have a government official killed and gun control will most certainly be on everybody's lips. Just like steroids being fought and villainized by government officials who know nothing about the subject. We'll just have to see who'll be the 1st to stand up to try and make a name for themselves.

Never waste crisis, here they come!

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0111/47338.html
One of the fiercest gun-control advocates in Congress, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), pounced on the shooting massacre in Tucson Sunday, promising to introduce legislation as soon as Monday.
no one should be able to buy stockpiles of ammunition used by the 22-year-old assailant.
What, bullets? What exactly constitutes a "stockpile" congresswoman, 100? 2?
“Again, we need to look at how this is going to work, to protect people, certainly citizens, and we have to look at what I can pass,” she said. “I don’t want to give the NRA – excuse the pun – the ammunition to come at me either.”
What are you scared of? If you think you are right go for it! You realize, however, that you are in the minority so you take quiet incremental steps don't you, you coward. :squint:
Another vocal supporter for gun control, Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley, told POLITICO that he hopes “something good” can come from the Arizona tragedy – perhaps discussion on a new assault weapon ban, sales at gun shows and tracing measures.
How the hell do assault weapons have anything to do with this? He used a regular Glock pistol. Oh that's right, they are both black and scary lookin.
“The ability to buy a weapon that fires hundreds of bullets in less than a minute,”
Last time I checked, I could'nt easily buy a Glock 18. I would be very interested in shopping where the congressman shops.

Typical anti 2nd amendment BS talking points. :nono:

^ Yep
Lets blame the Glock with the "high capacity clip" errr magazine instead of the actual root of the issue the crazed assailant. Was it the 33rd glock 18 mag? or the standard 15 rounder that comes with the 19?

I despise Carolyn McCarthy. I remember watching her cry on C-SPAN over a gun control bill, as if we're supposed to compromise our freedom because a woman is weeping.

Most of the news reports right now are on rotation, spouting the same message over and over. There has been a lot of discussion about the man's mental state and whether or not he is truly mentally ill or if he is just twisted enough to plan an attack on someone whom he disagreed with politically. I don't want this man to end up in prison for the rest of his life. I don't want our tax dollars spent to keep him alive. There aren't many people I would wish death on, but this man is one of them.

There's shots fired in every major city, every week.

Last week's Chandler Mall incident was relatively benign.

AZ is no different than any other state, except that we're in the national crosshairs because of sensationalism and irresponsible journalism regarding immigration and other hot-button topics (like firearms).

I'd encourage everyone to read, think, show restraint, and most of all, pray for the victims of Saturday's tragedy. We're all Arizonans on a day like this. :(

And absolutely this ^ .... If "everyone" carried, a criminal might think twice about drawing. GUNS DO NOT MURDER PEOPLE; PEOPLE MURDER PEOPLE. And since there are already guns in the world, banning them will do nothing but take them out of the hands of self-defending respectable people who only have them to protect themselves and their family from the armed criminal. Furthermore, paying respect to a great man and modifying a popular quote, "You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead hand; and even at that, you'll have to deal with my vengeful family." :yesnod Believe me as a lifelong member of the NRA and a proud parent/step parent, nobody could understand more.

There was a moment of silence observed this morning for those who have passed. The search is on for a defense lawyer for this monster. Among the first suggestions: the lawyer who defended the Unabomber. Judy Clarke was on that defense team as well as the Susan Smith case.

Banning guns will do nothing to prevent this. Put a gun in 1 of the people in the store and maybe they would have put him down before he killed all those people. I hate how they think because they make guns harder to get legally that it will in anyway make it harder for someone that cares less about the law to get a gun illegally. I guess I am just stating again what has been already put out there.
