^ And while you count to ten, they attack. Those kinds of people and their actions are deserved of attention, not so much the kind that they are seeking though. Sometimes swift affirmative action speaks louder than words, like shutting up the class clown before more disruption can occur.

I think you misunderstood my point, which is we need to stop feeding on hysteria.

Rhetoric designed to provoke an emotional and immediate response in an audience only works if the audience is provoked and shows an emotional and immediate response.

All great points.

I'm encouraged by what I'm reading... we've been discussing this in the Politics forum (where we can go more in-depth than we do in GenChat), and it's turned into an interesting (and educational) thread.

What I'm not a fan of, is how unbalanced the sympathy seems to be.

We hear about the congresswoman and the nine year old girl... but what about the other victims? They don't get special attention in the headlines? They're just referred to as the "others"? All I hear about is this congresswoman. I get it, the congresswoman is a prominent figure in the community... but I'm sure these other victims were prominent members of peoples' families. They deserve some recognition too.

Agreed. My favorite? Here ya go:

Dorwan Stoddard, 76

Witnesses said Stoddard, a retired construction worker, was trying to shield his wife, Mavy, when he was shot in the head and fell onto her. Mavy was shot three times in her legs but is expected to recover. Dorwan and Mavy knew each other as children. After both lost their spouses, they reunited and married. They were together for nearly 15 years. "They were inseparable. You saw one, you knew the other one wasn't far behind."

More about Mr. Stoddard: http://www.kgun9.com/Global/story.asp?S=13812508

Mr. Stoddard was the kind of REAL man and husband we should all aspire to be.

Here's to you, good sir. Rest in peace and thank you for your example.

I don't know, all this talk of hating those who hate, gives me goosebumps. Our country is so numb to the violence it makes me come to the belief that John Lennon's "IMAGINE", is just that.

If ANY good can come of all of this, here it is. Christina Green's parents donated her organs. A little girl in Boston has a new chance at life because of their decision.

I wish to hell this story had a good ending that'd be quickly forgotten about.

it's always the bad ones that linger and stay in memory.

Its not guns that kill ppl its the sudden noise they make...

I just dont understand the bile that groups like the WBC spew. Its just beyond me. Hate is too strong of an emotion for me to harbor. I just dont understand them. Why would anybody want to live a life filled with such animosity towards anything that is not like them? And then to carry out these acts of ignorance in the name of their god, because that makes it ok. I would rather spend an eternity in hell that live a life like that.
But im athiest and have no fear of hell.

^^ sorry. No animosity from me though i wear my personality in tatoos instead of jewlrey. That tattoo is no different than a cross or star of david. Im proud of who i am but not confrontational.

Back on topic.
The worst about the WBC is that they have made it about them. Im not so much shocked by what they are saying but just the fact that they use this as a chance to push their beliefs on TV. Its so sad. TV is evil.

**UPDATE!!!** Congresswoman Giffords stood up today! :woot: :woot:

Take that, Jared Loughner, you sonofabitch!

http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/19/ari ... tml?hpt=T2

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was able to stand with assistance on Wednesday, an aide said, with her doctor adding that the congresswoman has the strength to stand on her own......Yesterday, when Mark came back from speaking at her aide's memorial service, she reached up and untied his tie and undid the top button to his shirt," according to the e-mail.
"Last night, she took his iPod and scrolled through all the pictures. Early this morning she began to read cards made for her by some 4th graders! Her unbandaged eye tracked the lines, she opened the cards and turned them over reading the back. Mark's gotten pages of large print of Harry Potter's 1st book for her to hold and read......

I hope she makes a full recovery and is sitting in the court room when that ***hole goes to trial :yesnod

Surely for taking the child's life, he needs more than pain could ever deliver. Every time I see that sweet little girl's picture on the news ............. I am certainly thrilled for the survivors though!

I have a 9 year old and try not to think about it, honestly. Our society might be desensitized to such violence, but hearing about things like this happening to kids literally makes me sick. I couldn't even begin to imagine how distraught the parents are. 9 is a great age too. They really start comming into themselves.

I should elaborate. By "occupants" I mean the illegals and crazies. They make up 90% of the population anyway.

That's freaking awesome she stood up. I can't believe she actually lived. That a$$ Jared needs to spend a few days in my basement. Trust me, he won't be able to pull a trigger when I'm done with him.

LOL! That's funny because we rented a vacation house up in the hills of Tucson and the land lord was a total idiot. We pad an extra $150 for the 5 day rental so we could turn the AC down to 69 degrees (yes, my Dad is a polar bear) rather than the 84 degrees that the contract said. We got to the house and he hadn't turned the thermostat down and it was in a locked box. The guy wouldn't answer our calls - we tried for a full day to get hold of him. My cousin is a trained locksmith so he easily picked the lock and we turned it down to 69. The guy came and said he was going to have us charged with trespassing and nearly threw us out of the house. He then would drive by 4 times a day and check on us. I think you could classify him as a "crazy".

On topic that's awesome that she's walking and reading. Hopefully she makes a full recovery and is still able to be a public servant. I read somewhere that she's pro guns - it will be interesting to see her take on it after she's out of the rehab center.
