Haha no worries, I never asked you. :P Everyone would call me an idiot on this forum on how to ask how to paint the emblems. Just scratching and painting the thing won't do. You need to remove the original finish because Mazda uses electro plating base copper and the chrome like finish is electro plated aluminum. Paint doesn't stick to it.AppleBonker wrote:Ha! KV, sorry about not speaking up about the chemicals question. I must've had a major brain fart when you were asking.
I actually really like posting from my Droid. I think I've posted more my Droid on the new formus than I have with my laptop.cellardoorv wrote:Posting from the Droid. Its alright.

Gee, that looks familiar. DO EET
Are the emblems plastic? That sounds crazy to paint an emblem. Chrome abs would be a ton cheaper and look almost the same, and would be easier for you to paint over.krimsonviper wrote:Mazda uses electro plating base copper and the chrome like finish is electro plated aluminum. It's plastic underneath. ABS plastic I believe...AppleBonker wrote:Are the emblems plastic? That sounds crazy to paint an emblem. Chrome abs would be a ton cheaper and look almost the same, and would be easier for you to paint over.
To paint ABS, you have to use primer. If you don't it won't stick.krimsonviper wrote:It's plastic underneath. ABS plastic I believe...
On second thought, keep looking. price is too high. http://www.kbb.com/kbb/UsedCars/Pricing ... h=Trade-Innissangirl74 wrote:Gee, that looks familiar. DO EET

Sure you will. Just eat something raw and you'll shake off anything...Otto MCR wrote:I'll be fine.
Disagree. Most of the ABS on any of our cars isn't primed. TPU and ABS are relatively easy to stick to. TPO is much harder and must have an adhesion promoter. Then again, I'm speaking only with a knowledge of automotive-grade coatings. I've never tried to paint these plastics with a air-drying coating.nissangirl74 wrote:To paint ABS, you have to use primer. If you don't it won't stick.
Greg decided to list it again and it was just the right time. He had three or four offers the next morning. Super cool kid bought it. He's young but not stupid. I think he'll do just fine with it.AZ89two4Tsx wrote:Bex!!!!!!!!

Then it's not ABS plastic. People have been painting their emblems this way for years.nissangirl74 wrote:To paint ABS, you have to use primer. If you don't it won't stick.
Bleach to remove the metal coating from the plastic, sandpaper, paint - no primer. Some use clear coat, some don't. I might.AppleBonker wrote:Hmm, I never really tried painting chrome abs with paint readily available on the market, so I'm sure you figured out the easiest way to do it. I just thought it would be simpler than that.

Come to think of it, I don't know that we ever tried to recoat chrome-plated ABS at my last job. But most of our paint was for fascias/handles/trim/etc (chrome pieces don't make up much volume on cars).krimsonviper wrote:Bleach to remove the metal coating from the plastic, sandpaper, paint - no primer. Molding plastic for what use? Could be a different grade of ABS. Of probably about 15 different auto parts manufacturing facilities I toured for work, only one used primer on their ABS parts (mostly because their process sucked). All the rest of the places tried to avoid primer like the plague. The coatings cost far more than the plastic, so if they could get away with not using it, they would.nissangirl74 wrote:I worked in a plastics injection molding factory for nine years. The best results were in mold overlays and stamp printing but we were able to paint somethings. We always had to use primer though. If not, the paint would wash off with Dawn dish detergent or 409. Just my experience. If there are any additives to the plastic during molding, the primer may not be necessary.
