Actually, to this day I defend my exgf to the end. Everyone thinks she's a horrible ***** who screwed me over really badly. While she did mishandle some things, the breakup wasn't her fault or my fault (unless it really is true that she cheated on me, which I don't believe for several reasons). I just woke up and said "God! I'm such an idiot!" for still chasing after her for a month.
As for talking to a friend from 10th grade, I feel ya. I've started talking to the chick, who I stopped talking to altogether for over a year while I was with my exgf, recently. I had stopped talking to her because the attraction was way too strong, and she went to a different school (we were freshmen), so it wouldn't have worked anyway at the time (not to mention I was with my gf, who, in part, broke up with me cause of this girl). Oddly enough, while we've declared mutual feelings, we're still not gonna hook up for a while... it's like we turn it off and turn it on, so we're just keeping it off til we both happen to be completely single (just broke up with her bf and I'm sorta getting into something else again).
Whew, that's complicated, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Oh well, too many women is far better than not enough

.
So, moral of the story: If there was that chick you were always friends with and always sorta liked, but never did anything about it, give her a call or whatever and see what flies (after you wake up and yell "I'm an idiot!").
