i see them as ***holes. they impersonated FBI's and ransack my parents restaurant and poolhall back in the 80's. we had to close down because of the on going trial. we won of course, but it took us over a year. we still havn't recovered. the city didn't give us enough money to cover our losses. it wasn't just one cop, it was a gang of them. they also beat up my family, parents, brothers, sisters and relatives. we took pictures of them and they took it away and confiscated the film. we had to runaway with the film cuz they wouldn't allow pictures. kinda suspicious wouldn't you think. they weren't FBI's they were just regular police officers. like Tino said "give them a little power and they take it for granted". abuse of power. not all cops are bad, but everytime i see one, i think they are. they put that image in my head that will never go away. NOT MY FAULT!

In my experience half the officers ive dealt with were respectable and decent. And the other half were ***holes. Its impossible to generalize. But it seems like smaller town cops are more likely to think they are the king **** and give stupid tickets and be asses to people.

very true, there are some that are cool and some that are ****s. I dont think anyone will disagree about that. Once a cop pulled me over and completly made some **** up about how he saw me take a corner wrecklessly on a street I didnt even drive on. I told the ******* that I turned 4 blocks before the intersection that he claimed he saw me at and his reply was "well you better be careful in this car, when you lower them and sup em up you dont know how fast your goin" I was like WTF? whatever dude, i know how fast I drive. But on another occasion a really cool cop pulled me over, he got me going like 20 mph over and let me off with a fix it ticket for my front liscense plate and told me to buy a radar detector.

i personally think that all cops aren't bad, you just have to understand that in the end they serve your best interests

and if anybody has any reason to be mad it's me, i've been pulled over many times and have even been searched, and patted down for no reason,

but when u need cops they are real helpful, and its nice to have them there, when i was a kid my parents car got stolen. i was scared ( i was like 5) but when that cop showed up at my door, it felt good

and for those who think that stopping people for speeding is stupid, how about not breaking the ****ing law? also cops catch "real" criminals this way, if not for a minor ticket tim mcveigh ( oklahoma state bombing) would not have been caught

even though cops may never directly help you think about this, if there were no cops you'd get robbed every day, so just the fact that they exist in people's mind helps you out

and get a silencer for your muffler, give it that stealth style

LOL thats awesome. Never had any tell me to get a radar detector. Once a small town cop gave me a ticket for driving 40 ina 35 and i was about 100 feet from the 40mph speed limit sign. He also gave me a ticket for "running" a stop sign. I didnt run it. But i didnt come to a dead stop. I was pissed because any normal officer wouldnt have even bothered. But he wrote my court date for veterans day when the courts are closed. I showed up and realized it then went back home. I called the county attorneys office the following monday and ask what to do and they hadnt even gotten record of my ticket. So i figured the cop realized his mistake and threw the tickets away. But 2 months or so later I got a letter saying my fines jumped up over 300 bucks because i failed to pay them or appear in court. So i went to the courthouse and when i gave my ticket numbers they said that the tickets had been turned in late and if i had showed up they would have been dropped. So i explained i did show up but the courts were closed. Ended up getting the charges dropped and almost 400 dollars worth of fines redirected to the city that the officer worked in. I was happy because he was an ******* too.

He tells me that my exhaust is too loud, and in new york state, its illegal to modify an exhaust if it makes it louder then stock. Is this something hes making up? The exhaust is just 2.5" pipe cat back with a chrome, straight through muffler. I know that if youre above a certain decible level its illegal, but this laws sounds like bull. The first time i got a warning for the exhaust i was kind of hot dogging it around a corner, and this cop told me that it was illegal in new york state to modify an exhaust. period. he said anytihng over 1971 had to have a stock exhaust, which i also believe is bull. does anyone know how to look this type of thing up?

well im calling BS on this one. my cuz'n lives in NY in my exhaust is pretty loud. It might be like in the citybut in roral areas it might be different IDK. and i drove by a lot of cops when we visisted him and we never got pulled. IDK man they might of been haveing one of those days know what i mean!

ok you know what i take back what i said, PSL cops are fvcking pricks! After all the s*** i said to stick for them, i was driving 42mph in a 40mph zone, crusining with a CarClub, one of them peels out and he pulls us all over. i got a ticket for doing 60mph in a 40 zone??? WTF is that, i asked him what his meth or clockin me was, he said he sped up to our speed, well guess what, he was fvcking 100feet behind me. Also he claimed i flew past a StopSign and also drifted a corner? ok *******, i did not do one of them. so other then the 6cops who pulled me over (2cops each time aka 3pull overs) they all were power hungry asswipes, for the rest, well, f*** you too

I think if too many people complain about an ******* cop they should make them drive those gay little 3-wheel parking enforcment golf cart things. And give em pink uniforms too. or make them wear those funny canadian mountie uniforms or whatever, that would be so funny

I'm too tired to read the whole thread, but first to the Cali front plate question. I was in Costa Mesa, with my plate on my dashboard and a motorcycle cop pulled a u-turn after driving past me, to give me a ticket for it. So yes, you gotta have it attached to the bumper. Sort of like window tint, only cops who are in a really bad mood will give you a citation for it.

For the modified exhaust, the cop has to cite the vehicle code on the ticket. First check online to see if your state has the vehicle code posted on the web. If they don't, head down to the library where you can check out a book. The clerks will get you pointed in the right direction.

Some states and counties have begun putting modified exhaust laws on the books, because they are an easy way to generate revenue. In California, there are different permissible decible <sp?> levels based on vehicle age, type (car, truck, etc), and a few other factors. Also, the rules about how it has to be measured are very strict. (At least 200 feet from any busy street is the one that stuck out the most for me, when I read the code).

A few things:

As far as the knife comment....The World Trade Center buildings were brought down by guys with box-cutters.

For those who think they were unjustly cited. How many of you have actually went to court to fight the ticket? probably very few. If you don't use the rights you have, don't complain.

Lastly, Phax, the exhaust laws have in the past always been 50 feet down the centerline of the vehicle. But in the last couple of years, the law has changed twice and actually outline the procedures for measuring exhaust noise at the tailpipe and give a specific limit of 95 dB for passenger cars. And more recently, a law was enacted to allow referees to do sound testing.

Yes, cops really serve my best interest when they slap me with a freakin ticket for an exhaust. Yet they don't do a damn thing about the drug dealers peddling their crack at the park near my house. ƒuck COPS.

I should just the PD huh? It shouldn't be that hard. All I would need is an 8th grade education. I agree, I would hate to have their job. Having to sit at traffic signals and cracking down on "illegal exhausts" "illegal suspension" "no seat belt" blah blah blah.

What do you expect? He's a misguided punk-a$$ kid living in a drug-infested neighborhood who's terrified that he's gonna get gang-raped by the thugs in his 'hood, AND he's got a penchant for illicit substances and playing video games all damn day. What an all-star!

I guess I'd hate authority figures too, if I had no hope of ever being half the man (or woman) as the ones in uniform... :D

p.s. Still haven't heard back from Mr. Mouth - Apparently he's not too fond of "the woodshed"...

Maybe instead of faulting the cops who enforce the laws, those of you who dont like laws should blame the legislatures that passed the laws? True there is a great deal of discretion within enforcement, but it shouldn't be taken for granted.

This thread began with someone complaining about being ticketed for his exhaust - I posted the NYS statute - he was in clear violation. My point: that statute was passed by the NYS legislature, and the cop was well within his right to cite you for it. If you don't think the law is just, look at the legislative history to determine why it was put on the books - Probably there was a compelling reason, beyond the obvious. If there isnt a good reason in your determination, start a campaign.

like I said before, a police officer doesn't wake up in the morning and think to himself "I'm gonna pick on some import cars today" he probably thinks to himself "please, god, don't let andthing happen to me today, and let me return home safely at the end of the day."

the fact of the matter is, police officers don't only enforce traffic laws. they do EVERYTHING, unless it's the state patrol, but they rarely leave the highway.

they protect you from that axe murderer down the street, and I can bet money on it, they KNOW of that crack dealing ring down the street, and are just waiting till the time is right to react.

I've heard few TRUE bad comments about police, and the ones that I usually hear are whiney little punks that don't have their info right in the first place, and feel that the "popo" is out to get them and make their life a *****. No different than the crazy guys that think the government is controlling their mind,

they all aren't bad, i admitted to it. but the few bad ones screwed it up for me and my family. i see them as bad until proven otherwise. i can't help it! they did that to me. there are lots of helicopters here in LA. IONO maybe they are looking for me, cuz i SUED there dumbass. oh well life goes on... but i am turning around though. i'm beginning to respect cops slowly not entirely yet!

im kinda surpsied by the amount of anti-cop comments made here. But then I read the explanation behind it (if there is one that doesent sound like a blatant lie or exageration) and realize how empty their comments are.

Im sorry for the prick comment but laws are not that difficult to follow. And hey if you get a BS ticket, live with it. Who ****ing cares. Its not like your getting a BS ticket every day.

I look at it this way:

For every time I HAVE been pulled over and/or cited for violating traffic laws, there are a MILLION other instances where I have violated a law (excessive speed, change lanes w/o signaling, follow too closely, exhibition of acceleration, turn into the middle lane instead of the nearest lane, cross double yellow to pass, not come to a complete stop at a stop sign, stop in the crosswalk, etc, etc, etc.) and NOT been cited.

SO the way I figure it, I'm ahead of the game. And that's EXACTLY what it is.

THE "ART OF DRIVING" IS THIS: Can I get from point A to point B, in X amount of time, without endangering others or myself, without pissing off other motorists or innocent citizens AND still enjoy the PRIVILEGE that is driving?

I can - Can you?

Judging by the amount of cop-bashing I hear, some people have not yet mastered the art of driving.

And I STILL haven't heard from the loudmouth or the original whiner... :D

damn in this whole thread everyone has complained about cops who did their jobs. you all think that being pulled over because of speeding was wrong. ive seen many speeders on the freeway who i wished had a cop behind them. i myself have 3 points on my record, but i deserved every single one and more. the cops who gave me my tickets werent asses about it. i actually liked the way they handled the situation.

i have gotten pulled over in certian areas that i know because of my race. My work has me travel all over southern California and one night i was in a city where being other than white wasnt a good idea at 3 in the morning. i was in a nice neighborhood with a new expedition without plates but two papers showing its a new car. i was looking for the store i needed to be at and i had a cop trail me for a quarter of a mile. he pulled me over and even had back up with him. they kept looking in my truck with the flash lights looking for anything but were dissapointed when nothing showed.

In general i like cops. i plan on being a cop after college. there are bad ones and good. im sure all the people who are bashing the cops are still in highschool because everyone knows that without cops then you dont have a justice system. many of these peeps are very imature about their way of rationalizing cops... grow up guys

I never thought this thread would start so much. First of all, I would like to thank NY94J30 for being the only one who helped me out, and cited the exact law i was looking for. I appreciate it. Next, Im not just *****ing about a law, I did do something about it, like many of you have said. I got up early the next morning, put my stock mufflet back on, and drove down to the police station. I then had a very nice officer check out my car, and see the problem fixed, where he promptly signed a slip to dismiss my ticket completely. The main point of my post was to get the law info, and yes i did ***** and whine a little bit, i wont lie and say i didnt.

As far as hating cops, i should have labeled the subject "i hate the fat, old, lazy cops that patrol in my small upstate new york town" I know that its wrong to categorize all of the cops in my town into one group, but i did it anyway, and it was a mistake. Alot of people brought up some very good points to me.

next, I dont pretend to be driving a "high performance machine". I have the exhaust on my car because 1) thats how the car was sold to me, and i later bought a quieter exhaust for just this reason2) I like the sound of it, its not really that loud, and im entitled to like things, whether "serious racers" do or do not3) The exhaust system is less restrictive than stock, and the factory airbox has been ditched for a cone air filter. While somewhat crude, and cheap, it does provide me with some satisfaction, and i take lots of pride in my car. Hey, im only 18 and saving up to go to college, why should i blow all of my money on a car so young?

I would also like to point of that for those of you mad at me for saying i hate all cops, when i really only hate a few, i have a few words. Many of you catagorized me as a "ricer" since my exhaust is loud. IM not sure if i am a ricer, but ill explain my car to you. 2.5 inch pipe catback with ractive straight muffler, 3 inch cone air filter, dark tinted windows, and all nissan, se, and 240sx sticker and exblems removed and chanved, along with rear spoiler removed. Theres no stickers, no body kit, no wing, no NOS, just a few different things to make my car unique. So if i am a ricer, so be it, its my perogative to like my car tha way it is, and its your perogative to like yours the way it is.

Well done, elvis. Seriously. Glad you were able to get your citation dismissed.

BTW - I don't consider you a ricer. Hell, you're exactly where I was at 18.
