I change every 2000 miles.

I check my oil everytime I pump gas and around the 2000 mile mark it is really dark.

I don't want to kill my ball bearing oil due to nasty oil

I change mine every 3k or 4k in between whenever i feel like it..never went over 5k miles without changing it though. I use synthetic oil. I change my oil every month and a half or so as i drive almost 100 miles a day commuting to work and back.

Racked up almost 100k in 3 years. I feel bad for my car. Need a commuter

Wow more people change oil monthly than I had anticipated, but this a site where we like our cars more than most.

I change mine once every 6 months with full synthetic and a wix or k&n filter.I only put around 500 to 800 miles a year on it .The trips are not less than 35 miles when i do drive it, so imo it's not short enough trips to justify changing it much more than that.

I always used Mobil1 synthetic in all my cars. In my daily drivers i change the oil every 3,000 miles. In my project cars i change the oil every 1,000 miles, but my project cars usually see less than 3,000 miles per year.

Mobil 1 every 3k to 5k miles. Both Ka's run like champs! 93 octane gas always as well (even when it was $4.75 Gal)!!

I do mine every month. I put about 2.5-3.5k miles every month. Also I do a engine flush every other oil change.

holy ****, use MIGHTY auto products, their engine flushe's will make your engine run sooo much smoother, we did it on my brothers STI, their products are a bit expensive though.

Picked up my S14 in Dec of 2000 with 78,513 miles on her. I change the oil every 3,000 miles or 3 months, which ever comes first.

Mobil 1 10w40 all year around.

Currently at 204,XXX and running like a champ.

I know for track cars its different, but every month?? The "standard" is 3k and now theyre coming out with "research" from what I hear that you should wait for 5k to change it because changing your oil too often doesnt allow it to take full advantage of the oil? Idk just what Ive heard...

I change mine every 4k

I don't use flushes, they are so agressive. All it takes is one nice chunk to bust loose and plug a passage and your engine has a stroke. A properly maintained engine should not need a flush but if it comes to you in a bad state I would suggest a gentle slow enema. I use a rapid series of changes with a thin oil to slowly dissolve the deposits and get the stuff into the filter. Usually three to five changes at about four to seven day intervals with a filter and no putting a heavy load on the engine during this time, just smooth highway driving and around town with no serious acceleration or engine breaking. I get very good results with almost all the gunk gone, lifters come unstuck, idle smooths out, etc. Then start my normal maintenance cycle with the oil of choice, for me Mobil 1.

I have heard some add some ATF to the oil for its detergent properties but I have never tried it myself. I have run ATF in my transmission with no ill effects so it sounds doable in the engine in limited quantity.

I agree that flushes are too harsh. I use ATF or sometimes Diesel fuel, whichever I have handy. I usually change the oil, put it in with the fresh oil, and run the car for 10 - 15 at a fast idle. Then I change the oil agian, finishing by pouring a fresh quart of oil through with the plug out. This wont knock any hard carbon out, but it creates a good clean base. I can pop either of my high mileage valve covers, and it is clean underneath.

What about an engine that sat for 6 years with black oil in it? My lifters tick some and my timing chain rattles on most start ups even though I replaced my tensioner and chain.

I keep meaning to do atf but i never get around to it. Ive used sea foam in the past but I think this engine needs a more thorough/longer clean then a 100 mile flush. I have heard of people using a quart of atf insead of oil in a normal 3K mile change interval.

Ive got like 200 miles before my next oil change but Imnot going to do anything really abusive for another month so maybe I'll experiment with ATF...

Anyone run weird weights?

Like something slippy cold, but thick warm? 0w-40 or something wacky like that? (I dont even know if they make anything like that.)
