Make sure to use butyl rubber(dum-dum), not the rubber seals that came with.

You see this old sticky rubber thing that you have to clean up? That's it. It should seal better than rubber seals that came with. Basically, that's what automanufacturers use to install tail lights. Another name is dum-dum.

No. You remove it, then buy some more and reapply it when you put in the new tails.

Sorry for the confusion. Buy a new roll from the store. Looks like this when it's new.

Anyone find it at regular parts stores? Looking on line I don't see it for Advance Auto or Napa. Gotta get some and replace my driver's side tail soon.

If you have trouble finding it, look for a "windshield installation kit". I got mine a NAPA.

'gorilla snot' That's funny.

I went to a local body shop and asked where they get the dum dum from. It was a store that sells paint, painting equipmet and misc stuff.

You know these clear tail lights are really popular in vert forum? You hardly see them on coupes in 240 gen forum.

yeah, my friend has installed his tail-lights on his 1987 one of a kind mustang. He said i dont need the dum dum tape as long as i dont take out all the stuff that is around the tail-lights as you showed me. U get what im saying. He has that 1987 mustang at really high hp probably almost 600hp or more.

I see what your trying to say. You could re-use your old one but everyone else is recommending you replace it with new strips for reasons that include but not limited to :

1. your old one probably wont be as tacky as it was new so it may not seal out condensation and/or water which eventually will lead to very obvious water within the taillight assembly2. The strips will most likely look like *** once you pull out your old taillights so IMO its much easier to toss the stuff and put new strips behind your new ones (which you can line up precisely where you want it to seal)3. Everyone thus far suggests replacing it, myself included

The old stuff is ~15 years old. Reuse it if you want, but don't come crying to us when you get water leaks in your trunk.

Alright, all this talk (not to mention money flowing in from work and graduation) is inspiring me to go buy some tails. Not to mention they looks real nice on Ish's.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ZWDVW

This is the cheapest I have seen on ebay, and as far as I can tell they are exactly the same as every other Altezza light on there, as well as the kind cmkelly and DK bought. So, got the tails, and I can just re-use the same bulbs, correct? From looking around though, it seems a few of you have opted for the #1157 red lights to diminish the pinkness of the light, as well as #1156 amber lights, so I may go to AA/Napa for those and some dum-dum. Other than that, I should be fine, right?

They all look identical and nobody has provided evidence that any of them are made by a different manufacturer than any other.

I got my tails from that exact seller. I did a Best offer of $100 and they took it.

You can re-use most of your existing bulbs if you want. A 10-pack of red 1157s from mrtaillight.com on Ebay is $18 shipped (Item #200134800093). A pair of amber 1156's come with the taillights, but consider getting a pair of the silver-coated amber 1156s so no amber shows at all (still lights up amber though).

Yes, you should be fine... you've done your homework These tails really modernize the look of the car IMO.

A 10-pack? Don't I only need like....four? I've never had to replace bulbs on my 240 yet, so I don't actually know how it's all set up back there yet (time to scope out a FSM). I figured I would just get all the bulbs from AA.

Oh, and I shot two Best-Offers at them of 95 and 100 but they got auto-declined. I guess I'll just BIN.

Well, 10 were the same cost as 4. I couldn't find them at an auto parts store.

Maybe try $105? That will pay for your bulbs

Ha. That works. Offer of 105 accepted. Now just need to swing by AA next time I'm going that direction. After that, I'll make another little $300 purchase, wash my car and take new pics. Yay

Come to think of it, I could sure use some of that Meguirs wax that all the NSR folk were using to make their cars all super-shiny. And a buffer, cause last time I waxed it was a PITA. I dunno.

BTW, how much are stock coupe tails worth around here? I think I saw a set on eBay for like $7 with $10 s/h but it had no bids. Maybe 20-25 shipped?

Hey, you say you bought the 10-pack...do you have any left? I dropped by AA and NAPA today and they had two different kinds of 1157, one was 1157A and the other 1157LL, but neither looked like it was what I needed (the LL was for stop lights, the A wasn't though). They also had one thing of 1156 ambers, but it wasn't silver coated. Time to shop eBay I suppose?

I'm keeping them as spares, sorry.

The cheapest deals I found were on Ebay - a pair of 1156 silver ambers and the 10-pack of red 1157s.

Aww c'mon buddy, you don't need all those...

Well, I'll keep looking, I'll find em somewhere. I couldn't find any silver coated clear 1156's though - are these even really needed? I just saw them on someone else's shopping list that also got these tails.

Edito: Got a pair of silver ambers for 10 shipped. I DO need 4 1157 Red bulbs, right? So, in total, the tails have 2 amber blinkers, 2 clear back-ups, and 4 red stop? Just want to be sure and not buy stuff I won't need, or shortchange myself.
