Let's see - No pressure, right?

(I'm sleep-deprived, I hope I don't screw this up!)

We'd actually only known each other about 2 months, most of that was 1900 miles apart... Lots of IM's, phone calls, emails and text messages. I'd been out to Greeneville for a weekend, and I invited Bex to join me at the event in Savannah...

We attended the track day, explored historic Savannah, had dinner and planned to drive out to Tybee Island the next day to walk on the beach... I already knew, right after we met in TN, that I wanted to spend the rest of my days with her.

So, walking the beach, taking pictures, having a great time, I asked her if she'd run back to the truck to get something for me... Took a few minutes to collect my thoughts, then called her cell phone and told her I found what I was looking for.

As she came back up over the dunes, I had knelt down and written in the sand.

She said "Yes", and the rest is, as they say, history.

I'm the luckiest guy.

I made her a little slideshow afterwards and set it to music... I think it tells the story better than I can.

Seriously. Greg. Great story but the video actually made me shed some tears. I'm such a sap for these things.

Saying 'Yes' to that proposal was the easiest thing I have ever done in my life. No fears, no worries, no what-ifs. I can't imagine my life without him.

200 tealite candles. The whole house glowed from candle light. There were flower petals on the floor, leading her into the livingroom. That's where I was, down on one knee and asking her to marry me.

Now that was cheezy (the good kind of cheezy)

I still think you guys are insane for getting engaged after 2 months but whatever. . . I like to believe that once you find the right person there won't be any doubt in your mind.

If you find that right person, and there is no doubt by either person, what do you consider an appropriate amount of time before popping the question?

The fact that you are still a kid doesn't help you understand either, I'm sure. When it's right, you know it. Hell, the only reason we waited as long as we did to get married was the fact that I didn't want to put Priss in a new school so close to the end of the school year. I would have married him the night he asked me in Savannah.

Mine sucks compared to these good ones. I had been talking to my (then) girlfriend about getting married for quite some time, one afternoon we were bored and I said we should go shopping. We went to the mall and swung into a jewelry store. I asked her questions about what kind of rings she liked. She thought I was just getting an idea for when I would propose. She picked out some rings she really liked, and then I just told the saleswoman, "I'll take that one." She looked at me funny, and my girl looked at me funny, and I got on one knee, without a ring, and put my hand on the counter so the saleswoman would hand me the one that we had picked out. She handed it to me and I slipped it on. No question, she just said yes.

Then I filled out a credit card application.

Yep. Insane is good.

We had talked via AIM, email, text and phone for a little over a month before we actually met in person, and I often wondered if it's possible to fall in love with someone you're never seen...

I *knew* the moment I finally got to meet her in person, that I'd do anything to keep her around for good.

See, what's MORE insane, now that I'm older and wiser, is the concept of choosing a mate based on appearance - which is how we do it when we're younger. It's no wonder 50+% of marriages end in divorce. Sure, she might be beautiful.... she might ALSO be annoying, materialistic, emotionally unavailable, stupid, vain, certifiably nuts, irritating, attention-seeking, confused, with baggage, or have a crappy personality.

I already KNEW Bex didn't have any of those issues... So, when it turned out that she was smokin' hot, I was done.

See, I never understood how someone could fall in love with someone that they had never met. Your explanation is spot on. I had never thought of it like that.

As valid as the points you made are, I still think that had you showed up in Savannah and Bex had been in the 300+ club, you probably wouldn't have asked for her hand in marriage...

Noah, I can't say honestly what would have happened. I *can* tell you that as much fun as the weekend was, I'd have had a hard time not seeing her again, regardless of appearances.

Some things supercede beauty. Fortunately, I didn't have to "settle".

You are a MUCH better man than I am. If the girl outweighs me, I just don't see it as being an option. She could be the most awesome, amazing, wonderful person, but if I get scared to see her nekked, it's not going to work.

My guess is we would have already divorced. It has nothing to do with the appearance side of things either. I generally enjoy eating healthy, going to the gym and being active. If my (hypothetical) wife let herself go and gained that much weight, we would be rapidly drifting apart. It's pretty hard to have a functional relationship without common interests, and most of my interests would be hard to maintain completely out of shape...

Seriously, I wouldn't let it get that out of hand. As the weight started to gain, to the gym we would go. In the amount of time it would take to add on that much weight, she would know it would turn me away.

Here is where I will start to get flamed...

Being grossly overweight, *usually* is because of laziness and gluttony.

I am a fairly small framed guy. I put on a ton of muscle. I quit working out and started to get fat (10 pounds overweight) 4 years later. I was so disgusted with how I looked, I stopped overeating. I may have been a little hungry sometimes, but I like to see my 6-pack, not a fat belly.

So if she started to pile on the pounds, and didn't feel like working it off, didn't want medical help, didn't want to talk to a doctor about depression causing her to overeat, didn't want to stop the unhealthy habits, then we would have grown apart, and it would be time for us to end it anyways.
