if u pick u a can of aircraft stripper to remove paint, and some degreaser to clean it, yeah it can be done in a day. stripping the paint is pretty quick, but then u have to do a lil sanding, and wait for the paint to dry.... not too bad tho. start at noon, paint it in the afternoon or evevning, set it over night, put it back together in the morning...-Enzo

ps i have yet to drive the car without the tar and interior. ill have to wait until spring to find out the results of that

yeah i was talking about the tar. it is really loud in the car when it is raining but thats it.

if you got a girl she wont like it very much, because she has to yell to be heard. but which is more important your car or the girl.

EnzoRWD--About how much (in pounds) of that "tar" do you figure you removed?

If you guys really want to save some weight--replace all glass with Lexan

Only problem is that it'll be incredibly expensive. But you'd save a LOT of weight....

indeed. one of my windows is a bit scratched anyways. time for new ones~anywhooo, ill weigh the tar when i remove the rest of it. i dont know if its substaintial, but now i can sand and paint that nasty rust away....belt sander on valve cover - mmm careful ist really soft. it would work about as well as normal paper, that is to say, it wont get the numerous sunken places and the areas b/w the lettering.-Enzo

Let us know when you weigh it Enzo, I'm REALLY interested in knowing how much weight you saved, specifically just from tar-removal.

I used a dremel tool when doing my valve cover to get around all the crazy areas. I first used about three applications of heavy-duty oven degreaser and scrubbed off all the crap. Then I took it to a bench grinder (with a soft wire wheel) which worked extremely well and did not gouge the cover at all (it's not THAT soft). Then I did a lot of hand-sanding.

Anyway, I suggest a dremel tool for getting around all the kinks/areas.

spitz: no its factory defect, it happens to all 240's. i dont have mine either. my friend threw his out on night after racing his car. if you go to order it they will tell you you dont need it. so don't worry about it.

the thing is, i'm not running a factory timing chain kit. i bought a replacement kit that came with an upper guide but no right side guide. if the piece broke in half, i would imagine it was doing something in there. the chain must push against it pretty hard. are high rpms safe without this piece?

When I parked my car for the winter this year, I decided to paint my VC. It wasn't filthy, so I just did a thorough degreasing and pre-sanding of the lettering before I put on three coats of hi-temp semi-gloss black. Then I sanded the lettering with some 800-grit and applied a single coat of hi-temp clear.

Before going back on the car, I heat cycled it a few times, increasing to 300 degrees for 60 minutes on the third cycle. After that, the clear layer darkened to a slightly goldish tint. I didn't expect it, but it looks good with the black. Here's a before/during/after pic, and an installed pic... more pics & info in my sig link.

Two days after painting the clear layer (sprayed over the whole cover, not just the lettering) I heated the cover in the oven then let it fully cool three times, each a bit hotter and a bit longer. Temps and times are on my sig link on page ?3? and the process is supposed to set the paint and keep hot spots from discoloring the first time your engine heats up. Thanks for the compliments!

:( I guess no one was impressed with my VC. At least I was :D

I used high-temp (500*F) ceramic engine paint, called "ford blue," available at your local autozone.

I must admit, cam, your car is absolutely gorgeous. Oh so clean. And your cardomain site is informative and cleverly arranged. Good job!
