I was able to swap my JWT ECU over from my 1990 Q to my 1995 Q and tested it for about 70 miles today. While there was a considerable increase in power and performance the engine seemed alot edgier and not as smooth. The TCS light still comes on when the tires are slipping even though the TCS was disabled. Next I will install my 1990 non-JWT ECU and see if I can tell any difference.

If you use a TCS ECU in a non-TCS car, it will work just fine. TCS will do its thing, and the ECU will do its thing. The problem is, the ECU won't know to retard the timing and lean out the mixture when the TCS throttle is closed.

Thanks Robert, I assumed as much, but thought it was of interest that it still warned of tire slip. It might be a viable option to install the non-TCS ECU during the summer or for those who do not want to hassle having to turn off the TCS. Also wanted to let you know that the engine with the JWT was not nearly as smooth as with the 1995 ECU. I will try the stock 1990 ECU next to see if I notice the same symptoms. Please let me know as to the shipping on the "Better than JWT ECU". If you can't ship by Monday you might wait till after the Holidays as I will be out of town. Or I guess I could wait until you can modify my 1995 ECU with TCS. Not really a good time to do performance testing with the slick roads around here anyway.

I have an ECU from a 92Q. I believe it's a TCS unit but I'm not fully sure. Since my Q is not a TCS model, I'd be willing to trade 90-93 ECUs with someone who may have a need for a TCS model.... disabling seems a waste if there is a need.

Just to be sure... my part number is A18-A21 P66 2206 ...maybe Wes or Robert can confirm what type it is.

according to jwt catalog, that is a federal, no option (non TCS, non active).

i put a link to that site on page 2 of this thread.

Thanks for the link. I have a A18-A40M and a A18-D02 PF5 but can't find either referenced on the site.?

Looks like you're missing a few numbers - they should be A81-AXX-XXX or A18-BXX-XXX. THese are the numbers on the sticker on the lid.

Oh, and for you guys that need cores, http://www.car-parts.com has a few for around $75.00. Any 90-93 ECU is as good as any other for our purposes, except for the TCS differences discussed before.

Id say thats very plausible.
I have attached a pic of my 1990 JWT ECU. How upgradable are these to the new program? Is there a chip that can be unsoldered and sent in for the upgrade or is it the same process and price to upgrade as the standard ECU? The main reason for wanting the upgrade would be to get the safety factors (knock sensor map and 7200 rpm cutout) that your program has. Does your program also remove the top speed limiter like JWT?

Also, please let me know as to the shipping on the "Better than JWT ECU" for my 1995. If you can't ship by Monday you might wait till after the Holidays as I will be out of town.

Attached is a picture o fhte chip we redo... you should be able to simply pull that chip out (the circled one) with a chip puller and replace it with ours!!

Hmmm.... wonder what the top speed would be with limit gone would be on an early G50 and assuming vehicle is in good shape. I've hit 155 before and the Q felt like it had more to go... my courage was the limiter there.

The owner of T3 told me he had an early G50 with JWT ECU and Trimode TCU up to 169 mph, with some room to go.

Not sure if they're true, but I've heard stories of a guy who got caught in florida doing 178 MPH with a JWT ECU. I suppose at that speed you get billy-clubbed in addition to the jail key being thrown away.

So what parts (chips) does JWT replace when they do the upgrade? I just compared the JWT ECU with the one modified by aaacomp and OEM ECU that came with my 1990 and all three appear identical internally. I tried the OEM one in my 1995 and it turns out it's a TCS version (apparently it was replaced by a reman under warranty). The 1990 OEM one does not have nearly the performance of the JWT ECU and the TCS does not appear to kick in as aggressively as it does with my 1995 ECU.

Look carefully at that chip Wes circled. It's soldered in on the stock ECU, and socketed in tuned ECUs.

I think AAAcomp's ECUs were simply copies of JWT tunes.

What are CELs? So on the Aaacomp version I could just replace the chip as well?

Yes, but I would prefer that you send me the ECU first so that I can make sure that the board (hardware) is what I think it is. I really hate to make chips for an ECU I've never seen. Saves me from getting blamed for a bum board...

Ok, I'll send it with my core once I get the ECU I ordered from you. I don't have a chip puller anyway. Is there a practical way to test them prior and after modification to ensure they are good?Merry Christmas,

Plug them in and go for a drive

I have a bench harness that I use to test for basic functions. I don't have a way to check the whole thing, though.

The Aaacomp ECU does not work in either my 1990 or my 1995 - although he claimed it worked OK in his Q. Thats why I got the JWT. I just pried out the chip with a screwdriver. In doing this, I noticed the aaacomp ECU has two blue jumper wires from the socket to an adjoining chip? If you can send me a reprogrammed chip when you send me the ECU, I could plug it in and see if it works. If not, I could send you the Aaacomp ECU with my core ECU as it has no value to me as is.

If there are jumpers it is because he broke traces on the PC board with poor desoldering technique. I'll send an extra chip along, but I wouldn't expect it to work...
