While just about any auto transmission will shift faster than any standard manual transmission, it's only a part of the story in terms of performance. Even in a straight line. First off, the 6MT's hear ratios are closer spaced which maximizes the use of the higher horsepower areas of the motor. Secondly, the torque transfer on the upshift is not completely direct until the converter lock-up occurs.gwoods wrote:
Go drive a 07 manual sedan and an 07 auto sedan and see if you can tell a difference.
My auto shifts faster then I could shift a stick.
Drive train loss would be the only reason you would want a stick

It's a small lesson in splitting hairs here, as we're talking rather small differences in overall performance, but touting the shift times alone doesn't complete the picture.
While I haven't driven an 07 auto yet, Infiniti hasn't employed any technology that would significantly reduce the manual mode shift response times. That is, from the moment you move the shift lever to upshift or downshift, to the time the gear shift is actually completed. My experience with an 05 loaner left me rather disappointed. Upshifts were fast enough to tolerate, but downshifts were downright sluggish. Planning ahead for a turn took on a whole new meaning. It was a drastic difference between this and a good heel-toe downshift on a 6MT.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not coming down on your choice for an auto transmission, but there are very good reasons why a 6MT is actually better in terms of performance. If they ever decide to use something like BMW's SMG or a DSG transmission, then it would be a much different argument...
