My auto shifts faster then I could shift a stick.

Drive train loss would be the only reason you would want a stick

While just about any auto transmission will shift faster than any standard manual transmission, it's only a part of the story in terms of performance. Even in a straight line. First off, the 6MT's hear ratios are closer spaced which maximizes the use of the higher horsepower areas of the motor. Secondly, the torque transfer on the upshift is not completely direct until the converter lock-up occurs.

It's a small lesson in splitting hairs here, as we're talking rather small differences in overall performance, but touting the shift times alone doesn't complete the picture.

While I haven't driven an 07 auto yet, Infiniti hasn't employed any technology that would significantly reduce the manual mode shift response times. That is, from the moment you move the shift lever to upshift or downshift, to the time the gear shift is actually completed. My experience with an 05 loaner left me rather disappointed. Upshifts were fast enough to tolerate, but downshifts were downright sluggish. Planning ahead for a turn took on a whole new meaning. It was a drastic difference between this and a good heel-toe downshift on a 6MT.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not coming down on your choice for an auto transmission, but there are very good reasons why a 6MT is actually better in terms of performance. If they ever decide to use something like BMW's SMG or a DSG transmission, then it would be a much different argument...

Well, the press hasn't driven the gt-r as of yet, but it does have nissan's new dsg type transmission w/2 clutches. This enables the gear about to be shifted into to already be rev matched when the shift occurs for lightning quick shifts.

Now I can't wait to see ZR-1 vs. GT-R(of course the highest level out of 3)

The cost of the car should be close I believe the performance also. Now we have to see what the Toyota can put in the new Supra to stay competitive. Would love to see the other highly priced exotic car drivers dropping there jaws and realize how much more they paid for their cars to get the same performance or maybe less.

I think most of us would be more than happy to settle down with any of those 3. I did not hear much about the Supra but I bet it will be a beast. Mitsu yeah would be nice to see.

Hey, you're friends need a cupholder too!

...but, maybe it's a port for the Bose subs? hehehe, that would be cool. You'd think that Nissan would dump Bose after years of shotty sound!

Heres a thought, why not buy a G37X and put twin turbo's on it? I bet you'd end up with a car almost as fast or faster for less money.

I do love the styling of the GT-R. I need to see it in person maybe drive it. TOO bad my wife and I don't work closer together. If we sold the 07 Sequoia and 07 G35 we could probably afford a GT-R and she loves it just as much as me.

I love in Automobile how they have the SLOW IS-f and the GT-r in the same magazine. That is just good automotive journalism!

Its funny how the BMW guys are all so quick to compare a BMW335 to the G37. The BMW has twin turbo's the G is NA. I bet they don't want to compare the BMW 335 to a GT-R but thats more apples to apples what with them both being twin turbos.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the GT-R about the same size as a G37?

I guess 911's and Z06's would be the closest apples - apples comparison and its already beat both at the track.

I would think that the M6 is a closer comparison.

Yea on the 07 G's we call that rev matching DS mode :-)

Actually, a DSG transmission is pretty much completely different than any auto transmission, since it's actually an automated manual. With a DSG you get the benefits of a manual, with the fast shifting of an automatic, but with the DSG specifically, shifts are even faster, since it's two transmissions and 2 clutches, so shifting up to the next gear is just disengaging one clutch while the second one engages. The DSG trans are still going through some development and refinement, but they are the future of transmissions, and are faster shifting than either a manual or a typical automatic.

So, the GT-R with a DSG will be a better performer than if it had either a manual or automatic.
