so i'm sitting at my computer, and i hear this electricity buzzing. at first i thought it was my fan, but when i got closer it sounded like it was coming from outside. so i looked outside and i saw blue reflecting in the street so i looked up and the damn power pole was sparking and shooting up bright blue flames!

[GI Joe Public Service Announcement]Hey kids, if you see a power pole sparking and shooting up bright blue flames in front of your school, see if you can catch the sparks. That way, natural selection will happen more rapidly and at the same time reduce classroom size. Do your part to help California's budget. Now you know, and knowing is half the batte. if it was one of the heavy cables at the very top of the pole, its 13KV, unless it was one of the line on the lower part of the pole, then it was 3 phase 120...

zap your *** in a heartbeat. the substations you see step down the 330KV to 13KV to feed your local power grid. the 13KV get slung around you neighborhood at the top of the pole [at the very top, youll see three heavy wires] along the grid you see grey cans that step down the 13KV to either 3 phase 240, or 3 phase 120, depending on how your neighborhood is set up. your house picks one phase off of the low side, or if there is only 240 on the pole, you get a transformer to step down to 120, and sometimes you get a 240 line also to feed high power stuff in your house.

next time you look at a utility pole, find the little metal tab on it that says "13KV" if it does, then the lines at the very top are 13KV

When I was in Alabama one time, I heard a really loud boom went outside and saw the transformer flaming. Then there was a loud boom and a blue ball of light/electricity shot down the line. Coolest thing I'd ever seen.

I went to plug a playstation in, apparently my brother who has greasy hands, unplugged it. Needless to say when I was midway through getting it all in, my hand slipped and my fingers landed on both prongs. I had a burn mark on my chin where it apparently grounded...

on road trips when I was little, we had a station wagon with the flip up reverse backseat, and I used to pretend I was a tail gunner and acted like I was shooting those and we were trying to escape them...

those are the substations.

take the 330KV transmission lines and step it down [13KV or 240/120]to feed your area/neighborhood/local power grid.
