Ok I just got my 93 j30 a little over a month ago and it won't pass smog at the moment. The guy pointed out a few hoses that I already replaced and the check engine light is on. He also told me the emissions are too high at the 25 mph test. After doing a lot of reading on this forum. I found out how to check the code with the ECM. I have 32 and 34. Knock sensor and egr system.
After doing a lot of looking looking over on my engine I replaced a lot of vacume lines and a couple pcv lines. Then I heard leaking toward the passenger side of my engine. I found that one bolt was missing from the egr pipe to the side of the engine and that where the bolt should be it was filled with silicone.
I took the other bolt off, cleaned off the silicone and stuck a new bolt in there but it's still leaking.

My first question is what are the steps in taking the egr line completely off so that I can clean it out and how hard is it? I'm assuming its still leaking because I didn't reseal it with any type of gasket. I've got some liquid gasket and bolt sealer but I want to properly clean the lines before I do that.

My second question is about the knock sensor. Do I just need to replace it or might it me a more difficult problem? Also how hard it it to replace?

Thanks for any help in advance

you can buy new egr gaskets here: http://www.z1motorsports.com/product_in ... cts_id=590

http://www.z1motorsports.com/product_in ... cts_id=589

as for replacing knock sensor, you might as well wait until you are doing a timing belt job. it is underneath the lower plenum so hard to access. you can trick the ecu by putting a 1 megaohm resistor in the det sensor plug that goes to the ecu. this can be done to trick ecu it is good for now until you are ready to dig deep under the intake.

it is located in the valley towards the passenger side head for intake port right in the center.

Ok cool thanks. I read enough on here to figure the egr assembly out. But do I need to remove the whole tube or can I only disconnect it from the engine side to clean it?

You mean knock sensor relocation. I've seen that video. Very helpful for later.

As for the knock sensor, like Swimshark said, you can install a resistor to trick the computer (I did 650k ohms, but 1M ohms will work just fine) but this should only be a temporary fix. As I am not as advantageous as shark in ripping apart my engine, I did the knock sensor relocation and it made a world of difference. A $7 generic knock sensor from Ebay, a $.75 bolt from Ace, some speaker connectors and wire I had lying around, and 15 minutes of my time resulted in this:

I got my power, gas mileage and peace of mind back after doing this little mod and it was worth every cent!

Awesome I will do that for sure. Which bolt did you relocate it to?

Yoda - that's what the wire and speaker connectors were for. Since I am a broke college student, I didn't opt for the harness not only for financial reasons, but by sitting on top of the engine I wasn't too worried about heat and so far it hasn't been an issue.

Here is a link to a similar knock sensor to the one I used:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NISSAN-KA24DE-2 ... 94&vxp=mtr

I located the knock sensor on the plenum bolt in the back of the engine, here is a pic for reference:

interesting.

No splicing necessary, essentially just made my own ks harness.

Its on the drivers side upper firewall.
There is two connectors there, and one of them runs under the plenum.
That's the Knock sensor connector.

ok back to the egr. i failed the smog test for the second time today. i read a bunch of good things on the CRC stuff that says it will guaranty a pass on emitions so i thought ide give that a try. i ran it through its cycle got the car nice and warm and took it in.
before the CRC stuff all the emissions were fine except for the NO at 25mph. it was 610 out of 491.
Now after the CRC stuff everything else was even better than before except for the NO. it was worse. the 25 mph was 668 out of 491 and the 15 mph test failed at 789 out of 481

the guy told me it was probably the egr not allowing the air to flow when it needs to.
i need to clean out the tubes but the last time i tried to get the tubes off to clean them they wouldnt pull out all the way. i unbolted the egr tube from the side of the motor and also umbolted the clamp about half way back but it still didnt want to pull all the way out. can anyone help?

ok had to take off the brackets on each side and give a lot of force to tubes out. both were completely clogged. cleaned both but the one on the passenger side wont slide all the way back in. it slides half way in then stopps like something is in the way. i dont get it. its not bent and its completely smooth. i worked on trying to get it back in for about an hour yesterday and quit when it got dark. now its raining so cant really work on it at the moment.

The tubes get a tad bent when you pull them out of the Plenum while they are still attached to the egr.
just takes a little tap from a rubber mallet to convince it to go back in.

 ok on my way out to get it smogged i notice that it now idles and sputters very bad. when i got to the place the guy was cool and told me i might not want to go through with it because it might not pass. so i took it on the freeway a bit and the check engine light went on. when i got home it gave me the egr code and also the idel speed and ignition timing codes while it was running. im so confused and stressed out. when i press up on the egr the idle dies down a bit. i love this car but its starting to be a nightmare. :wtf2: idle was fine before i cleaned out the tubes

Not sure if I should use my one free retest to smog it now. Or if I should work on it more. But I'm not sure what's wrong.

Well i bought a can of seafoam and ill run that through on my next day off. I don't know if that will help the problem at all but it can't hurt.

I believe when u press on the EGR valve the engine should just about die out..which means its still blocked or EGR valve is defective...u should reference the FSM

some threads to look at if you havent already:

where-s-my-egr-valve-t345317.html

code-32-34-on-a-1995-infiniti-j30-t462523.html
which states:
1.Code 32 could be as simple as a loose or cracked vacuum line between the EGR control solenoid and the EGR valve
2.The concern I have is with code 32. I have an 1995 infiniti j30 with 150K miles. A friend of mines had the same code shown on his 1994 M30 with around 160K miles and replaced the EGRC solenoid which the check engine light went away.

ha! im pretty sure i found the problem. it should have been the first thing i did but for some reason i didnt check the rubber vacume line going into the top of the egr until now and there is no suction. i followed that hose which is about 2-3 inches and it goes into a double male fitting but there is no hose connected to the other side of it. so there is no source for the suction. i need to know where that hose needs to plug in so i can run to autozone and grab a new hose.
