I went to the local sound shop here (Car Tunes, they are the ones who are repairing 2 of my amps) and they told me that I would be ok to run the pro60's on the sq4070 mmats amp. I know that the amp runs 70W @4ohms and the speakers @ 3ohms. Would this be a serious issue? Because rather than trying to sell the amp and get the Rockford, I would wanna use this amp if no harm will be done.
What do you guys think?
This is doable, but you'd have to be careful about it. Running an amp at an impedance lower than it is designed can easily cause it to overheat. Your amp should have protection for this, so it wont fry itself. However, constantly going into protect mode still will not be good on the amp. You may be able to have this work if the gains are set to appropriate levels and the volume doesn't get too high. Before you spend money on a new amp, I would try the old one out. Monitor it very closely (after setting the gains to a reasonable level that is) for temperature. I'd say check it regularly (even with just a touch test), but be careful. If you're going to burn your hand quickly while touching it, the amp is getting pretty warm and this might not be a good long-term solution. Ideally, an amp that is stable to a lower impedance would be used. However, I understand budget constraints and that this might not be the easiest to accomplish at this time.
