Two things...

Be careful about getting an "off brand" power supply. Crappy power supplies can cause major headaches. I've always had *great* luck with Antec stuff. Their cases are also top notch and not too hideously expensive.

Also, make sure you get a quality brand of memory. Again, defective memory can cause all sorts of wacky and hard to diagnose problems. I like Crucial memory (http://www.crucial.com), but Corsair is a good brand too. Mushkin is also good stuff, but really expensive.

Why not get a nice CDROM/CDRW/DVD combo drive? You can get Lite On for $59 from Newegg.

Yes don't skimp on PS or Memory, it can make or break a system. NewEgg.com is an excelent place to get parts from.

Samsung also makes a good Combo DVD/CDRW Drive.

And Why are you going with a 100GB and a 40GB ... You can get a Seagage Baracuda 160GB for less, and IMO alot better then the WDC.

The Seagate Barracuda's sound decent. Not the best performers, but quiet. I've got one of the Western Digital "Special Edition" drives with the 8mb buffer. The larger buffer is nice and AFAIK the Special Edition drives have a longer warranty than the normal ones. Might wanna check that though.

The drives that you have listed should be fine, as long as you're getting a good price from a reputable retailer.

Check http://www.resellerratings.com to make sure you don't get hosed.

macs are poop. My mom's imac has eaten through no less than 3 harddrives, yes, its on its 4th. the first one we replaced with a stock one, then when that died, she got an 80 gig maxtor one, when that died, she replaced it with another mac one, that died, so she got a crappy harddrive and it seems to do the job. This is all in the last 2 years mind you. The 80 gig had a warranty, and since my PC hd sucked, she gave me the fried harddrive to send into the company to get a new one. They sent me back a 120 gig hd.

with the harddrives i like to have my OS and installed stuff on one drive (the 40 gig) and all my other stuff.. like mp3z and such on the other drive.. it keeps everything clean and easy to format and reinstall.. wich i do every 2 - 3 months..

about the geforece 4 mx440... it'll be fine as long as your not serious into gaming. if you are a big gamer, go with either a gefore4 ti series, or if you don't have that kind of money, get a geforce 3. and don't be afraid to look at ATI's cool video cards.

If you need help building it I've done it professionally for several years and have built a few dozen computers from scratch at least. Your list sounds very good and well concieved, buy a good 450 watt power source, it's extremely important. If you have any other questions, e-mail me at [email protected].

You should get the 8mb cache WD hd. if you sacrifice 20 gigs on the 100 gig, you can get it for the same price. also, I would get the Geforce 4 ti 4200 64mb card unless you don't care about gaming. It is cheap and kicks arse. also, I don't trust AOpen products that much.

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ is having some heating problems. Go with a 2600+. Worth the extra money for a lack of hassle and a power increase.

WD special editions rock. Get two of them.

RAM: don't get crappy RAM. I only use Micron but I'm a RAM snob :) get Micron, Corsair, Kingston or Samsung only. DO NOT get PNY.

MX geforce cards suck. Refresh rate isn't as good and the resolution options are limited. Get a Ti series only. ATI sucks unless you wanna spend 300 for the 9700 pro.

Just my .02

Crucial is Micron's in-house memory. Some stuff marketed as Micron memory might not be 100% their stuff...as in, Micron chips on someone else's PCB. You could get good Micron chips mounted on crappy PCB...go with Crucial, Corsair...etc. I don't have any experience with Kingston or Samsung.

I'm gonna have to disagree on the ATI part of that. ATI makes some very good stuff that can compete with Nvidia at several different price levels. As I recall, Maximum PC magazine recently did a comparison review of mid-range video cards, and the 9500 Pro did *very* well. I'll check the article if I can find it.

I bought an Athlon XP 1700 processor for $ 42.00 and overclocked it to 2.5GHz (something like XP3000) which is faster then P4 2.8GHz.So basically I got an XP3000 for $42.00.

Perfectly understandable MasterMan .. I personally use RAID Solutions .. quite a bit more money, but if a HD fail's all i have to do is replace it, and I loose no data. I have done several WC Systems, love them to death especially on a EPoX 8DRA+ / AMD XP Combo. If you want to talk about it, can do so in the chat room.

4Gig of memory is overkill unless you're running a SQL DB or something. 512M should be the sweet spot you're aiming for. I benchmarked higher with the PC3200 but for some reason it runs better with the 2700. Must be the technology...dunno.

If you go with the Geforce 4 skip the MX and go with the Ti with the extra money you'll save from not buying so much memory.

Also check out Volcano heat sinks for that 2500+ you got. It'll take care of the heating issues and it'll be quieter ;)

Like someone said on here. A good power supply is important and if u want to game get the geforce ti 4200 or higher. Yeah that much memory is overkill. He said 512 is the sweet spot and they were right. i'd only consider even 1 gig of memory if u run intense applications to their max. I personally would spend a little more and get the P4 with hyperthreading and 800mhz bus (more for getting the hyperthreading which helps with multiple applications gonig) Not too much more for the 2.8Ghz. and easily overclockable. If you got any questions just give me an email. Ahh i remember building my first computer with my dad..... An old Zenith Heathkit that used CPM, no hard drive and had vaccum tubes in it. :D

You guys are n00bs, I built a killer system that kills P4 3GHz for under 800 bucks!Newegg.com has the BEST prices and the BEST customer service!I ordered **** from them and it was here 2-3 days later, never late.Example; P4 3GHz = around $350 P4 = 3GHzAthlon XP 1700B = $42 XP1700B = 1.47stock - 2.6+OverclockedI ran few banchmarks, and my computer kills a standard P4 3Ghz system.
