You should get some mineral spirits and that will take all that residue right off, s*** is magic.

And that stuff around the edges is called seam sealer. And it is evil. Almost any where there is that evil stuff on my hatch, theres a light coating of rust. and other wise there's no rust.

but i like saying the word cocking haha

ive been using degreaser and some wetsand 320 grit sandpaper haha, it actually workes pretty decently i was really supprised hahaha, that whole area in the pic i got wtih just a half sheet, i wish i had something else a bit more effective however since (you cant really see in the pic) that it takes the paint off which protects the metal from rust so i got to somehow use a legit rust protector after i weld everything

hopefully i can get this car welded before the two local events commin up and hopefully somebody will be there to take pictures! haha

thanks very much ive been on your build a few times lookin at stuff haha

i liked the way the 002 looked on my stock body but i think with the majority of a work 9 kit on there i would need 17s haha

After looking I see where you would need a bigger maybe a bit more "classy" of a wheel for the kit.

yep lol it sucks cause my wheel taste isnt cheap (i know you cant tell from what i actually have lol) so i need to go 5 lug probably to get what i want

a cheap alternative would be the rota grids in 4 lug

but id really like:

work eurolines

vs-xx

fn01r-c (also in 4 lug but id like the wider ones  )

id preffer 9 up front and 10 in the back :frown: so much mulaaaa

Update: 07-09-2010

So i found a peice of steal wool today in my backyard and i was like hmmm...this will probably come in handy (it couldnt be worse than the 320 grit wet sand and degreaser i was using orrigionally). It worked SOOO MUCH BETTER!! i was able to clean way more and easier wit it today so i got to get a bit more done today

some pictures...

Oil Pan supported by 2.5 NHL regulation hockey pucks just to show how low the car is...they key isnt even really all the way striaght up either haha

Image

Drivers side roughly before i started work

Image

After cleaning it today..much better

Image

next thing to go...this is under the floor matt drivers side...gross!!! needs to go ASAP

Update: 07-10-2010

ok so i got some better pictures for you all lol

started off the day cleaning MORE nastiness out from the inside of the car so now i only have a little bit left which im happy about hahaha. here is how the inside looks at the moment

Image

i got a welder today and spent a few hours messing with the settings and practicing on a spare chasis of mine. i was lucky enough to have it since the practice im getting is the exact same material as what i would be welding so i got the hang of it (after using more than half of the 4lb spool it came with) and did a little bit of actual welding as you can see above

here is an example of what i feel is a good weld. it seem solid with minimal spatter and is smooth and nice

Image

here is an example of a bead that i need to re-melt and work into a better one..this one is thin and ugly and dosnt seem too solid

Image

its gettin there! :dblthumb:

Update: 07-13-2010

Alright so lets start off with the small stuff i did...i installed the battery tie down getting ready for the skid pad this weekend

The previous owner got one of the bolts that held in the passenger seat totally stuck. when i went to remove the bolt i broke both the tach welds holding in the plate that held in the nut that the bolt threaded into...fail. but i managed to pull that metal apart a bit and sit a nut in there roughly pointing at the same angle as the one before it. welded it in and to my surprise, everyting bolted in perfectly...sooo yay

Also traded my old j30 diff which i didnt need anymore for a fender and two tyres haha the fender fixed that ugly gap!

Image

Now on to the welding project ive been working on...now i will admit i had a few burn threws :squint: :tisk: but i managed to cover them up making it look like a larger weld hahaha ;)

also got the whole rear half of the car done today so im pretty stoked about that.

driving impression was intense! i felt my car was already pretty solid and then i drove it like this. its rediculous how solid it feels now, everything is krisp is the only way to describe it its so smooth and pronounced now so im really happy

dont know if i will be able to continue to weld the whole inner chasis before the track event this weekend but im going to try :)

Are the welds only from the front seats back?
Just wondering, I might consider this. :o

yep yep i stopped at the base of the front of the wheel wells

i will be continuing to do every seam i possibly can but yeah so far pic 1 and 2 of the above post is the farthest i went.

i mean welding any seam is better than stock haha...thanks for lookin at the thread

is the welding just to stiffen up the body? sorry i dont really understand this even though i've seen it done quite a few times haha

yeah its to make it stronger if you look at the seams of the car they are sealed together with like a rubber. and tach welded roughly ever inch and a half, adding the welds instead of the glue helps make the chasis more of a solid peice rather than a bunch of peices tached together

i noticed it alot when i took the glue off and would back out down my driveway i would hear it creek and flex haha

i never thought that welding up the seams would stiffen up the chassis so much. haha but then again i didnt know that it was tach welded every inch and a half underneath all that damn "cocking" lol i may have to try this on my hatch once i get some spare time to.

well it feels more solid ive alreayd seen track cars with this done and it seemed like it should do a fair bit of good welding the seams together making the chasis more ridged, i havnt gotten to the weaker part of the car yet which is the front area so hopeuflly i can get to that area soon

plus...to be quite frank...the car is a pos. and i figured if i might as well start making the slow transision from my dd to track car since this is the pos i want to be competing in and what not lol

eventually a cage..im deff not welding it if i do decide for weld in but that would be after i stop dding it

thanks for lookin

p.s. its a pain in the a** to get to the point to weld

that seam rubber is the devils skeet

Stitch/seam welding does help, and it helps a lot more when you have a cage as well. Seems like you're doing a nice job so far, keep it up.

thanks thanks

hopefully make some more progress with it tomorrow when im off and get all the way up to the feet area of the car welded

im getting better at this welding thing the more i do it haha

and yea cage is ultimate strength since well its cross support in an otherwise empty area :)

i just dd the car so a cage would be unsafe and unwanted attention ATM

A properly built cage will not make it unsafe to drive. Just the opposite really.

Your worried about head clearance, yeah if you hit your head on the cage there's likely to be some bad repercussions. But if you have some one build a good cage, and you have a good bucket seat and harness, you will never hit your head on the cage. Ive sat in a few caged cars and some Ive hit my head on (with a helmet) and others I haven't.

I plan on daily driving my caged s13 every where. I just can't decide if I want to paint my cage gold or flat/mat black, since the rest of the car is black and the motor is gold.
