+1 , I've met lotsa Vette owners. Friendly group of folks, especially at car shows or at racetracks.

Funny, I've had nothing but good experiences with Porsche owners. Then again, it's always been track day owners, not car show owners. And Boxster owners have been the best of all. I guess if you're willing to buy a car that's freakin' fantastic but that everyone dogs, you've got to be an ok dude.

AZ, you bought a Corvette? Happy 50th birthday, man!

My "least favorite" Corvettes: C4's.
And greg, if you ever need any kind of info. on aftermarket parts LMK. I know a pretty good amount about LS motors in vettes/f-body's.

On a recent vacation to the Black Hills, SD in July I saw an invasion of vetts. There was a rally in Spearfish and every where you looked....Vetts. With Sturgis looming in a couple of weeks there were plenty of bikes also. Here are a few pics when we were in the town of Keystone, just a few miles from Mt. Rushmore.

40th. And thanks. :dblthumb:

I'm not sure what's "fantastic" about a Boxster (especially the 1st-gen), but to each their own. It's a gussied-up MR2 (yeah, Porsche got down with Toyota) with acceleration times on par with (and in some models, way slower than) a Civic Si or VW GTI.

Most of them I've seen have been driven by some middle-aged wanna-be Paul Tracy who swears it's the fastest thing on the road JUST because it's by far the fastest thing he's ever driven.

I LOL at them. :)

I guess you're not down with the MR2? Great cars in every iteration (thought the MR-S could have used the 2ZZ or whatever). And what, you buy a Vette and all the sudden it's all about acceleration? The Boxster is NIMBLE, man! I remember when they first came out the S did R&T's slalom course faster than an Enzo!

But yeah, the non-enthusiast owners are on par with...well... non-enthusiast Vette owners, the hairy chested gold wearing bastards.

1st-gen supercharged MR2 was a blast to drive, almost dangerously sketchy (I drove one of the first one that came to AZ...Swapped ends on the test drive). 2nd-gen much more driver-friendly, and a gorgeous design.

Keep in mind, most Boxsters sold aren't the S (I can respect that car a bit more). The chumps I'm referring to are the 1st-gen driving 7.6-second 0-to-60 weenies who've never seen upside of .4 g's.

Just for fun, I compared the 2001 Boxster S to my car - same magazine testers, same issue, in fact:

Car and Driver Issue Aug-01
2001 Corvette Convertible 6MT
0-60 4.50 s.
1/4 mile 13.10 s.
70 mph cruising 76.00 dba
skidpad 0.90 / 0.92 g.
full throttle 84.00 dba
70-0 braking 162.00 ft.
idle 60.00 dba
top speed 162 / 158 mph
70 mph coasting 76.00 dba

Car and Driver Issue Aug-01
2001 Porsche Boxster S 6MT
0-60 5.30 s.
1/4 mile 13.90 s.
70 mph cruising 75.00 dba
skidpad 0.93 / 0.91 g.
full throttle 87.00 dba
70-0 braking 165.00 ft.
idle 48.00 dba
top speed 155 / 144 mph
70 mph coasting 75.00 dba

I'd call that a pair of pretty evenly matched cars. Using the non-S Boxster stats would have been embarrassing...that thing is a pig. :)

So does that mean the C5 Corvette has acceleration on par with a Civic Si? :couch:

Now if we're getting to pick our variants, compare the Boxster S to Empty V's 200hp beast... 0-60 in 7.9. Awesome!

I'm not sure we're really arguing over anything, though. I'd take a Boxster S over a C5/C6 droptop or base model, but certainly not the C5 FRC, z06, or C6 z06+.

but uhh... money no object the new Boxster Spyder give me massive wood. Well so does the ZR1... One of each, please!

And they both have a lot of really, really douchey owners.

Agreed on almost all counts. I'm just surprised Porsche ever decided to even BUILD the non-S variant... even more surprised that anyone bought it. Kinda makes me wonder WTH I'm gonna buy after the C5... For the money, it's damn near impossible to beat. Probably a used C6 Z06, altho I don't like the looks as much as the C5.

Interesting weight breakdown on the 3 C5's: Coupe - 3246, Convertible - 3248, Hardtop - 3173 I'd have thought there would be a bigger difference across models.

Seth's buddy that had one at Nopi years back was pretty damn cool.

but yeah, they're usually jackasses that think their dyno queen is the greatest car ever made.

not when Mustangs walk the earth damnit!

Haters gonna hate on that, but they're the most versatile car out of any damnit.

Shut up F body crowd, your doors are too heavy.

Yeah, but if you put a Miata on paper up against both, the Miata would look like a Yaris by comparison. Yet, its one of the greatest cars ever made and among the best to own and drive for more subtle reasons, like control, feedback, and "grins" per mile.

The Boxster and Corvette deal with control and feedback in a very different way. Mid engine/rear engine, size, width, power... its apples to oranges even if both of them are sports cars.

The magazines like to compare the 911 and C6 quite frequently, but no one cross shops the two. Its just superfluous journalism.

Exactly. That's a debate that will last for ages.

And, truth be told, they're BOTH fun as hell to drive, but for different reasons.

Fortunate is the man who gets to enjoy both.

p.s. James, as much as I respect Ford over GM, I dove a 2011 GT recently. Not much has changed since 1988. Fast and sloppy.

proof that the SS has a faster 1/4 time than the new 5.0, in a real world setting. Can be provided

EDIT:
ok, so the 5.0 has a stock 1/4 time of 12.73 http://www.dragtimes.com/Ford-Mustang-T ... 21072.html and the SS Camaro 12.61 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBpve1Enha8

 You're really that retarded?

EDIT: I just noticed that you're a 23 year old WRX driver :wtf2: so we're dealing with someone who obviously looks at numbers opposed to history and style. Put a '68 or '69 with the ZL1 or any Vette with an LT-1 up against any of your amazing cars.

No need to sweat acceleration numbers on old Vettes... At the time, there weren't many cars that WERE fast.

It's definitely it's own world. Like you've stated it's mostly populated by older drives and chances are hardly any of them will ever see the track. They're not about that at all. I thought about putting headers on mine and going crazy but right now everything is OEM/stock so why ruin a classic? I'm never going to take it tot the track. I'd rather take a cruise through Decker Canyon (13mile canyon run down to Malibu) every few weekends with the t-tops off and just enjoy the sound, feel, smell and turning heads. It's also pretty awesome driving around and getting waves from other Vette owners. You for sure feel a sense of nostalgia and community when that happens.

EDIT: Sorry for being harsh Charlieo, I was overly defensive. It must have been all of the wallballs and 53# KB swings from yesterday.

on the plus side, for less than a grand on the old Vettes, you can remedy that pesky acceleration problem ;)
