Out of sheer curiosity- is the lighting from those things decent at all, or are they as bad as people assume?

Honestly- after looking at the other thread previously linked- the fitment doesn't look too bad (though I don't know if anything had to be modified in that thread). It seemed to match the fenders and hood- the bumper was a horrible fit.Not saying anything about the aesthetic value of these lights, just noting that no one commenting so far has actual experience with these lights, save DirtyGhetto.

no if you loose a race becuase of a .2 second difference thats your fault....maybe you sould practice on your skill instead of spending hard on money on some fugly lightsjust admit you like the lights man

I'm only going to post because Dave and Ian did....

But just back to the subject of "aerodynamic...."

The coefficient of drag is based on surface area exposed to the opposing wind resistance. So, to find the coefficient of drag (simplified, but not by much) you take the "flat" portion (the portion exposed to the opposing wind force) and multiply it to another term that i wont get into.

Drag force = D = A*Tau

The exposed surface area of a pop up headlight while it is closed is minor. It would be modeled as a rectangle that is probably around only 2 inches tall by about 8 inches wide. This is the MINIMUM possible surface area, and thus yields the smallest drag coefficient.

Unfortunately, when the light is popped up this area increases to the entire size of its headlight, PLUS its surrounding area. Now thats probably an area of about 8*8 inches, which is the MAXIMUM possible surface area.

The lights you have proposed not only contain the regular area of the pop up headlight itself, BUT they also contain the area of the two circles that represent the headlight. This surface area is greater than the area of just a closed pop up light.

THUS, when your lights are not in use, the coefficient of drag is HIGHER compared to stock with those lights. But when your lights are on, the CD is a little less than when the pop up is up.

Guess what, all of these effects are fairly negligible, mainly because when you model the front of the car it contains the entire front profile of the car.

So you wanted a useful post? I've made my own pop-up light replacements. The output was terrible. I had to make a new set, and the output was still not as good as stock. You have to pay to play (safe), and investing in headlights is not worth it.

especially because you plan on crashing the car apparently, and the only thing you're worried about is how much its gonna cost to replace the lights.

Bottom line, Silvia hood + GOOD DIY headlight set up is going to be the only viable solution. Its by far the most aerodynamic, it costs the least to replace (depending on the projectors/bulbs/etc), and it doesnt look like booty.

edit: i just read through the post, i accidentally write the drag force as the coefficient of drag almost the entire time, however it still all makes sense, and you probably dont care. I havent slept in 3 days, and i dont care either.

Those same tuners don't come into 240 gen chat and ask people about whether they've had success with some crappy cheap cosmetic mod. And when you're a good enough driver that .2 seconds matters, neither will you.

Cheapest + Lightest = WIN.If you're looking for something thats cheap & easy to replace if damaged, throw a Xenon lip on your stock chuki bumper for looks and go this route for OEM fitment, IMO.

BTW, I hear that the East Bear lights are even harder to find than the Super Made ones. And neither look very good without aero, IMO.

Ive ridden in an FD RX7, as well as an FC RX7 with those style lights. The output was complete and utter garbage. That style light was never meant to act as a solo driving light, they are designed to be auxiliary.

The only time Ive seen a setup like that have good light was on a ford probe. The owner had purchased a kit just like that, but instead of using the supplied lights he retro'd in some HID projectors out of a VW Toureg. The light output was good, but the fitment of the cover was still pretty poor.

lol, these actually arent bad at all. i suppose its good for anyone trying to save weight by the slightest bit but sacrificing looks. the lighting is pretty good, there cheap though, plastic + ugly = garbage. to be honest i never really liked flip up headlights until i bought my car with these hideous things on it. now i love flip ups.

Good luck, I don't have personal experience with them, but I've heard Raceon has some of the worst customer service known to man...

Thanks. I'd imagine you'd save about 8lbs or so per corner with those, the pop-ups are understandably heavy. Personally, I'm not satisfied with my pop-up setup and am looking at doing some custom stuff, possibly backyard version of supermade, but with better lighting.

The green SuperMade equipped car I posted was featured in SuperStreet this month. You may want to take a closer look at his setup...

They don't look bad at all in real life a dude with an old pig nose hatch had them on his car at gas station. He used hella lights for his set up. i'm wondering if i should use hella or piaa

Ha. I'm actually looking at custom fitting some camaro lights- I believe they are smaller than stock flip ups, still in dreaming-soon-to-be-research phase.

Those were on my 240 when I bought it... along with some nasty looking fake carbon fiber mirrors that he put on backwards. The first thing I did when I got home was put the OEM mirrors and slightly broken OEM popups back on. *sigh* Good riddance.
