Sorry I just got back from a weekend at VIR. Actually it was more than just making back the investment. The car sold for 7 times the original sticker price. That's why I said the V-12 Ferrari market went nuclear. I seriously doubt any of the newer generation 8 cyl Ferrari's (308, 328 355, 360) that everyone sees around now are going to appreciate like that.

You must have a very trusting father or he just doesn't care as much about material things so much as his son's happiness.

I just keep picturing Ferris Bueller's Day Off in my head...

He was both. He was also my role model. That's a pretty good one with Ferris Bueller's friends dad. In my case, it was the opposite. I was the one who kept the car immaculate. And my father rarely objected to my using it as long as he knew where I was going and if I paid for the gas/oil. Since it ran on Sunoco 260 (100 octane leaded) and had a 20 quart crankcase (2 oil filters), I couldn't afford to run as much as I wanted when I was a teen.

where'd you get the gas at? There some sunoco up there or did you have a 55 gallon drum in the garage? hmmmm....that'd be pretty cool to have a big drum of gas sitting around...

i hear exotice car prices exploded in the early ninties because of the large luxury tax congress passed on new high price cars/boats/planes that has since been abolished because of angry car manufacturers.

sounds like a Democratic tax plan.

Kinda like the tripling of the car tax in California by Davis before our new governor repealed it.

Mr1der. You got it right. After they stopped selling leaded 100 octane at the pump, we set up a barrel swap program with the local Sunoco distributer with 55 gal drums (old fashioned hand crank to pump it) for awhile. 55 gal was good for about 2 tankfuls. Eventually it got too tedious and restrictive, so our mechanic "detuned" her to accept 94 octane unleaded with a lead additive and octane booster.

J-Spec: I think that was a good part of it, but I think it was a combination of factors. Other factors included a lot of people making a killing on the overvalued bull stock market at the time, and having enough disposable income to splurge on a status symbol car. Then realizing a year or two later how unbelievably expensive Ferraris are to keep and dumping them. A 30,000 mile service on some V-12 models exceed $20,000! There was also a misguided speculation of increased values after the death of Enzo Ferrari.
