It you notice the top of the strut tower is a separate piece spot welded to the lower sheet metal. The welded in cross bar does not directly reinforce the top of the strut tower bucket, but the bar mounting plate does give a little support that would otherwise not be there. I still noticed a slight movement in the tops of the buckets when I jacked up the car, most likely because of the 2 stud mounting system. So I purchased the strut tower brace from a local 240sx part out for $5. After installing just the 1/8th" thick mounting plates there was a measurable change in the movement and flex of the rear sheet metal from the weight shift on the suspension. So I then installed the crossbar and tightened it down. Much didn't change after that, but I just left it in. It has been that way for the last 2 years and I just haven't given it much thought.
So for the little gain in rigidity versus the cost, I feel it was worth it compared to buying a big name brand bar to receive the same thickness mounting plate.
