I went to the dealership and got the part number for the CA18 rod bolts. They do not cross reference with any other Nissan rod bolts, so they would either have to be re-branded ARP bolts from another application, or specially-made.

Mag, you say you bought them and they fit well and everything?

yeah I really wanted to swap to ARP rod bolts while I was building it too. I asked ARP and nada... But a good thing was my caps didn't stretch prior so I guess the stock bolts are pretty tough. Deffinitely would be nice to have ARP quality bolts in them though.

Mounted up the Maxima Alternator today:

Pulley Diameter:CA = 2 15/16"Maxima = 2 11/16"....more output @ Idle.

As you can see the mounting at the top of the alt. is VERY different so I made a custom adapter bracket to bolt to the alt. I also found a mystery piece from the motor that I had in a box that happened to work very well to adjust the alt. tension...

Block/Oil pump mounting = exact!

Final Mounting

how it works

I have them at the machine shop right now, but I'll head down tomorrow or Saturday to check it all out. they looked the same when I got the package. the ARP hardware was black though.

I was waiting on pressing them into the rod, but I'll make sure they fit and post up the results asap.

thats a genious idea.

haha your right! That is the throttle cable bracket. I couldn't figure out what the hell it was... Ah the car won't be running for months anyways, that's enough time to find another one!

hows the belt alignment with that alternator? can u use all 4 ribs or is a 3 rib setup... i guess u follow one of the golden rules closely "keep it simple, stupid"

you can use a 4 rib.

The back of the pulley is in line with the back of the crank pulley. So it's offset is exactly the same as the Ca alt.

one thing I cannot test however is if you can retain the use of the stock size belt

maybe for sustained high rpm applicationsDoubt rod bolts has anything to do with the CA18 chronic rod bearing failure for everyday use. Sooo many other reasons pinpointed.

My machinist told me that both con-rod#4 bolt(s) failed (stretched), causing the bearing failure. It wasn't bad, the PO shut down the engine right away and the crank regrind was minimal. the bearing didn't completely fall apart, but the piston took damage from the flopping off-balance mass of metal.

If there was anywhere in an engine that a good bolt is required, I think fair to say the con-rod is the best place for it.

-Cheers.

I spiff-a-fied the coil pack cover. I agree with most on here that the coil packs need to be vented to live a long life and maintain performance. But I just couldn't let go of the cover, I had to run it. It just looks so nice.

So I vented the stock cover and painted it up.

shows where I would vent the cover

looks like shiet

vented and all new paint

I get the best of both. Vented and stock looking. schweet.

turbo/IAC line are up next.

the maxima is alternator great! where did you get the alternator bracket? did you fabricate it yourself? (the one on the alternator body)

and also, did you check if you can retain the use of the stock size belt?

no new updates on it unfortunately.

I picked up a '71 240z and have been putting money into that. But Imma go against the norm and throw this engine in the Z eventually.

Yeah for the top Alt. mounting I used the throttle cable bracket bolted to a custom adapter piece that I fabricated that bolts to the Alt. housing.

I have no idea if the stock belt will work, since I am not using a belt driven water pump. That pulley is missing.

One thing I did notice is due to the new alt. and no stock water pump, that the belt routing will interfere with the timing mark "pointer" on the front cover. So I will have to grind that off and drill a hole higher up and use something like a 2/56 screw as the "pointer" now...eh, it's all custom anyways. lol.
