Just pulled the oil pan on my 1996 pu and found several large pieces of plastic in it - one 3-4" long! Didn't expect that at all. Hope its not the engine saying good by. What would be a good next step?

Those are more than likely pieces of your timing chain guides.

You need to do a timing chain replacement.

Pictures of the bits would help in identifying them.

Pictures are easy - but I'd likely need directions to get them somewhere you could get a look. Brand new here, no idea how to attach anything - pics, docs, etc - to this.

Maybe you lucked out and its just your upper timing chain guide, which isn't needed anyway!

I thought that was more of a DOHC problem?

99.99% sure your lower timing chain guides are coming apart. Stop driving it until you replace them. I bought a 2001 ka24de for a buddy and it ran. I still pulled it apart to do the seals including head gasket and the timing parts. The guides wear and deposit plastic on the head you can see it I the picture. This is a ka with 115k miles and they are this worn past 160k your on borrowed time another problem is when the chain goes it likes to take out the oil pump.

Yea, it's the guides for the timing chain. We JUST replaced one in an Altima that broke in the parking lot when we went to pull it into the shop. Luckily we didn't end up with any bent valves. It did break a piece of aluminum on the upper timing cover and ruin the oil pump on the lower timing cover, similar to what you see in the photo above. The parts aren't too expensive, but it's time consuming. If you've never done it before, it will take you all day.

And to make it REALLY clear, DO THIS ASAP! DON'T KEEP DRIVING IT!!!!
