I suppose it could be done. But why? The features in the 2008-2010 aren't that amazing for all the work that's needed for that modification!

Hey Guys,
After carefully reading this entire 3 page post I had to register . I have been surfing on the web for a very long time trying to find answers on how to go from non-nav M35 to
nav M35.. and finally I hit this post.. :chuckle: Pretty amazing stuff that all you guys have done ... I would love to do the same to my '08 M35 but the question is... Could it be done on the 2008 and up models same way as " mcdoken " wrote up ?! Another thing that I question after reading five successful posts... how on the 7" screen ( non-touchscreen ) do you operate the nav system ( typing in the addresses etc. etc. )

Sorry for so much questioning but I'm on fire to do this install...

Partysan, the 2006 doesn't have a touchscreen. Also, the 2008 has HD nav instead of DVD nav. I can tell you that I've sene people replace the 7" screen with the 8" one somewhere on this forum, but I don't know that it was to go from not touch to touch. I'm afraid you're going to have to keep searching, unless someone else on this forum can point you to a more relevant thread.

Count me in as another 2006 M35 Base that has now been successfully upgraded to factory nav. I paid about $519 total for all my parts, including the slick 8" nav screen. All went smoothly. Took lots of pics. Will post them if others consider worthwhile and they aren't already somewhere else.

Note that my M doesn't have much in the way of upgrades, period. No Technology, no Journey. Fortunately, this was the only missing must-have for me on this car (really wanted the color combo I got), so I'm ecstatic that that box is now checked.

Tomorrow I'll be installing the USA Tech PA15-NIS ipod interface. Getting a little tired of ripping the car apart, but all the help here in this forum is making it much easier.

WOW THAT IS A GREAT PRICE!!! WHERE DID YOU GET ALL OF YOUR PARTS FROM??? I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AND I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYTHING THAT COMES CLOSE TO THE PRICE WHICH INCLUDES THE 8 INCH SCREEN.

HOW DID THE INSTALL GO FOR THE IPOD INTERFACE??

Got all my parts from 2 different ebay vendors. I did get exceptional deals on each part based on what I was seeing. The best deal I got was on the screen -- $109 -- but I had already bought something from the same seller so they were generous with me on best offer.

The PA15 install went smoothly. Sounds great. Still gotta learn how to use the various functions. Also gotta take the dadgum console back apart because I forgot to plug the stinkin' clock back in.

One funny side note about the PA15 install. I scared the crap out of myself thinking I had fried some electronics somehow. I had the PA15, iphone, etc all hooked up and ready for a test prior to putting console back together. Started the car, but tach and other dash stuff was not operative. Pushed the button to turn the car off, but it didn't until several seconds after I popped the key fob out. Long story short, I had not plugged in the two cables that go to the box above the radio. Not sure exactly what all that box does, but glad that plugging it back in made all ok!

I know that they are all on ebay but not at that price. What vendors did you use if you don't mind me asking? The cheapest bluetooth/navi unit I have found is 400. I would like to get the 8 inch screen but thats not a big deal and i have found a good deal for the switch, its just finding a good price on the navi unit.

As soon as I bought my 2003 M45 I was thinking about looking up if it was possible to do this. I have not seen the layout of my year/model with navigation so I am not sure how much of a pain it would be, but it looks like it would not be as easy as these. Does anybody here have any info on the difference between my car and the one with navigation or where I could find it?

lovely -- sorry to say that it appears I lost all my pictures when my iphone croaked recently. I got a replacement under warranty, but my backup somehow isn't giving me all of my pictures. If I can figure it out, I'll post them.

Thanks Ken.So can I ask a hopefully simple question? The wood trim pieces on either side of the control; should these simply be pried off? I think the service manila suggests to use a special "tool" I take this to mean a screw driver. Thanks,

I'd really try not to use a screwdriver around trim. For the right side piece (the long one), I was able to just use my fingers off on one end/corner to get it started up, the a slid my fingers along underneath the length so as to keep pressure close the pressure clip I was trying to release. That is, don't use the long piece of wood as a lever for the rest of the clips.

For the small piece to the left I did have to use a tool ever so slightly to help get it started upward. I used a cheapy, plastic 1" scraper I had laying around. I just barely slid it under the front edge and gave it a slight twist, then grabbed with my fingertips to finsih removing.

Same deal around your dash vent stuff -- try to keep hard metal pry tools out of the equation in favor of fingertips if you can.

Well, I finally got around to installing everything last week. The install was amazingly easy. The entire job took a bit more than an hour and only because one of the screws on the DVD drive was difficult to get out. I took some pictures if anyone needs help.

Here are some photos. I apologize they are out of logical order.

What is important is the following:

Removing the glove box - The glove box basically pops out by inward pressure on either side. There is also a cord you have to unclip. Not very hard
Remove the black cover behind the glove box. I bunch of screws. This is key. Also, not very hard.
Remove the wood trim to the left of the control unit (no screws here). I used a plastic putty knife. Be gentle. Not very hard.
Remove the wood trim to the right of the control unit. Be sure to remove the two screws, accessible from underneath. To hard.
Remove control until. One screw on left hand side. Be careful of the connectors. Not hard.
Remove the grill on top of the dashboard (where center speaker is located). Also used a plastic putty knife. No screws. Pops out easily. - This is where I put the GPS antenna using double sided tape.
Remove the bluetooth control unit. Two screws on either side. I found this to be the most difficult. The screws were very tight.

Reverse procedure to put it back together. Good luck!

Based on the information in this thread, I decided to attempt this upgrade as well. I have a base 2007 M35: basic 6 speaker stereo and no other options. I bought a used NAV unit, antenna, DVD and a control panel off eBay for a combined total of $375. I tackled the install today, expecting it to take most of the afternoon, since I am not that technically savvy. But I was amazed when the total job took 35 minutes! I now have factory NAV! I can't believe it was that easy. I did not buy the 8 inch display, but it is just fine on the stock 7 inch display. And the voice commands work great! I'm a happy camper today.

I just wanted to add to this. I purchased a navigation control panel and touch screen from a 08 M45. I tried it on my 07 m35x but didn't work. It plugs in but something must be different internally. It let me go to diagnostics screen but the 2 options was greyed out and I couldn't select any option. I couldn't control anything but the volume button, nothing else would work. At the end I had to put everything back to base. I didnt get far enough to try the screen after trying the control panel unsuccessfully, I just put things back. I ordered a control panel from a 07 and waiting for it to arrive.

Have anyone else experienced this? Did I do something wrong?

The 06-07 is DVD based navigation while the 08-10 is HD based navigation, So it's slightly different hardware. The 07 parts you ordered should work.

DVD is the way to go!!! you can find a used disc for cheaper, especially if the previous owner has bought the latest/greatest? DVD version.

those with a hard drive based nav unit have to go to the stealership for updates....which might cost much more (unless some genius figures how to hack the hard drive.)

Just to update. I successfully updated my base M35x with nav using the same instructions above. The 08-10 Nav control panel will not work with 06-07. I was hoping it would just so I can have the grey buttons instead of the clear ones.

Just completed this install. Couple of heads up item. There are two "hidden" screws involved in taking off the wooden trim above the glove box. They are hidden by two little tabs that slide out to reveal the screws. I managed to break both tabs by forcing them out. A little super glue and some washer reinforcement will fix those. Getting the cord reattached to the side of the glove box was made easier by looping a string around the end of the cord where it attaches to the glove box, pulling it up to where it needs to be and then just cutting the string once in place. I purchased the nav/dvd player for $88, the controller for $50, antenna for $15, and the disc for $33. Took it for a test drive before buttoning everything back up, and seems to work very well. For $186 and some sweat, well worth it. Route your antennae down from under the speaker grill before finishing the installation of the dvd player. Glad my dash vinyl wasn't pristine before I started, as even using plastic tools, the vinyl is very fragile and shows where I was prying to get the various pieces off. Of course I have gorilla hands, too.

Not difficult at all, and not counting superglue drying time for the broken tabs took about 2 hours with a lot of breaks.

Just read this tread & was wondering, if I swapped the US control panel & screen (EH100) into a japanese Fuga (Y50 M45) would that change the language to english?
