Best 6-cyl ever?

V8 240sx? Sure! If either the chassis OR the engine is non-Nissan (i.e. SR20 in an RX-7 or LS1 in a 240sx), we've done it.

Looking for a solid 6-cyl engine, best head and block out there?

I guess the Supra 2JZ is one of the best but also BMW´s I6´s able to handle 1500bhp on stock crank and block/head.

Other ideas?

Well, you can't just use the block, crank and head..if the pistons and rods fold up then the motor is through ***. The Dodge 2.4 mill in the SRT4 will hold 1500HP on the stock crank as well. But you won't see me using that damn thing...lol.

We'd have to really narrow down the requirements to pick a best 6 cylinder motor for a swap. Or in general...whatever.

For being in stock form, the 2JZ is definitly in the top 5 period. That thing is insane if tuned well.

The E36 from BMW is also a major player, but the high compression pistons make it bad for any type of forced induction. The parts to rebuild it are about as much as a liver transplant.

We could name the best motor by every manufacturer and then rate them from there to get the top 5. Sound good?

Toyota = 2JZNissan = RB26Mazda = ?Honda = ?

Ford = SHO Motor?GM = 3.8 turbo from GNXDodge = ?Caddy = ?

BMW = E36Benz = ?Volvo = GAYAudi =

Whoever else I'm forgetting?

I mean head and block now, solid block and well flowing head.Best base engine to build a crazy turbo monster, a solid crank is nice and will save some cash.

In my opinion all engines should be boosted and forged pistons/rods should be a new law.

To be clear, the N/A engines will be turbo converted and lower comp.

Toyota = 2JZNissan = RB26Mazda = ?Honda = ?

Ford = SHO Motor?GM = 3.8 turbo from GNXDodge = ?Caddy = ?

BMW = 3.6 and 3.8 E34 M5 engines. (1500bhp so far)Benz = ?Volvo = 960 3.0 N/A (800bhp on paper so far.)Audi = V6 TT from RS4 and S4.

Btw, forged BMW internals can be found here, low price and low comp.

imho the cummins turbo diesel in the dodge pickups are by far the best 6 made. many many over 1000hp and twice the torque? yes please, and also a bigger aftermarket than most any import motor.

ford would be the sho 3.0, not the 3.2, the 3.0 has a better rod ratio and therfore, more revs!!!! wooo.

ill kill anyone who puts a honda motor in their nissan. unless its the s2k motor (dont know the code, im not cool )

the srt-4 motor is great ( i love my srt) but it lacks any real revs. with the s3r ecu, it only goes to 6500 and not many have seen any reliability over 7k. but darrel cox racing has a 2.6 litre kit that uses a longer crakn and shorter rods to "give a more useable powerband" but i havent seen any kind of definitive info on that.

the gnx motor is great, but they are all getting close to being 20 years old...unless its a new crate, but there are much better options for that money.

the northstar motor is awsome but obvously an 8 so it doesnt count.

im still waiting on the bwm v12 motor swap from the older 8 series. they are really compact and sound absolutely intoxicating. and since they are horribly complex, most people dont mess with them. megasquirt and a few turbos. iirc, they are only about 20 inches wide and about th same as a rb length wise.

im still contemplating on doing the 3.0 sho swap with a cobra six speed. and taking out my sbc. but we'll see.

The Chevy 3800 Series 2 motor is great. If you get the one out of the camaro you just drop in GTP rods and pistons and you have a pretty stout motor.

they were 4.3...I have no idea how close in relation to the Buick it was though.

it was a turbocharged and intercooled Vortec.

ok...they're more based off the small block than anything.

oh, check out this gay volvo.

Why are we not considering the Best N/A 6 cyl? lets do that while were at it, obviously the KA has yet to see over 200hp at the wheels without alot of money thrown at it in N/A form, so what can I drop into my 240 that will net me good N/A horsepower out of a 6 cyl, lets broaden our thought train a little?

Best N/A? Probably BMW, 100hp+ per litre stock, that´s crazy...The best N/A is often the best boosted as well, as long as the block and other stuff can stand the extra abuse.

They run 1000hp BMW 6´s on stock cams over here and one guy even got a non ported head, just forged pistons/rods and a lot of boost...p0rn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...earch=

If you want NA then you install a V8...period. Basically the same amountof work and money, but one will yield quite a bit more top end. A full big block motorset is $1500...

as did I the first time I saw it.

I really wanna find a turbo wagon because of that.

I agree with WD about NA power...unless you want that delicious sound an inline 6 makes.

Yeah, I´ve seen some sick wagons as well. Saw a white street legal 740 making 9´s last year...

Edit: Haha, found another fast 740 wagon -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPQ5JfJEDjQ

Subaru H6 swap.....

Cheaply built (deck, clean, bore, hone, forged rods/pistons) will handle 1000+hp..... due to the fact the boxer motor is a perfectly balanced motor....

How fathomable is the swap into a nissan? I wouldn't even want to think about it.... plus you pretty much need the sti 6spd transmission which is $4500...

Do you really think the Subaru engine is better than 2JZ and BMW M-engines?

nope, not at all.... 2jz is probably the most dominating USDM 6cyl motor.... along with the rb26 on the JDM

sure as hell a lot cheaper though, will make the same power, and in a subaru takes less horsepower to run faster qrtmile times (<-- assuming its in an awd subaru)

plus it would be pretty original lol

The only downside is it would cost more money than its worth to swap it into something other than a subaru, and it would cost a lot more money for everything you'd need to go along with it like the transmission, ultimate racing 42r turbo kit, etc.....

If you mean it would cheaper to do a 2JZ swap then yes.

Also, AWD is slower in the 1/4. The only exception being the GTR because it transitions into 2WD once traction is attained. The parasitic loss from driving all 4 wheels really hurts STI's and EVO's. On a road course they are animals for sure, but in a straight line, rwd owns.

Slower traps maybe.... yes. Not slower times. The AWD car may ESSENTIALLY be a slower car, but can attain faster quarter mile times....

I mean take an sti running 11.89@118, a mustang would be running 11.90@128. Same times - less horsepower, less speed. Nothing to brag about, really - its a slower car. But its a slower car that runs the same times. The RWD car spends most of the race catching back up to the AWD... the RWD car IS faster. RWD doesn't start to dominate until low 11's or even high 10's. Anything close to 400whp, an AWD car can usually take down the RWD in a straight line 1/4mile.... assuming we're not running drag radials and have insane suspension.

The skyline is just amazing lol....

Edit: I guess you guys are talking about massive amounts of horsepower too.... or we wouldn't be talking about the best 6cyl.... I'm speaking about what is more feasible in real life to me.....

2jz is prob the best 6cyl. Its a close battle between that and the rb25/26.... I don't know much about the skyline motors.

I've seen LOTS of AWD cars launch and LOTS of GTRs launch. I can get just as much traction and cut 1.5 60" with a RWD car. You'll do no better with AWD, and when you start putting down enough power to out drag me, you puke trannies left and right to actually launch the car hard enough to break a 1.5 60".

I'm not saying they aren't slow but it is no way near fact that a AWD car is faster, thats a dumb statement. Launching is all about weight transfer. With a good set of drag radials and a 1/2 decent suspension setup, I'll launch just as hard as any awd.

They DO NOT spend all their time playing catchup...where are you from and who are you racing?

Agree, RWD rule drag racing, hard to beat with MT tires.I saw a 9 sec Audi drag race last year, he had the front wheels in the air when launching, the 4WD were extra weight in that car.

Got to admit that 4WD is a killer on the streets, the RWD´s is lame without sticky tires and grip.

Agreed, another reason the GTR OWNZ...

The R32 is getting alot more affordable nowadays. Getting pretty old though, take a little TLC to get them up to par.

About the BMW v12. A good friend of mine Chris has a v12 from a 7 series in a e36. Racing Dynamics sold a swap kit about 10 years ago, my friend bought the kit from a guy in Canada who never did anything with it for 1500, I think its retailed for around 9k. The engine came from miltons with 38k on it. Swapped a 6 speed from a 99 540, had Hogan Racing build a itb setup since you can't use the factory setup and its running a haltech standalone. I think he is on car domain still. It was originally a green 328is. It has Hamman pg3's, M3 bumpers and skirts, carbonfiber trunk, doors, and hood. That car hauls bigace. He's a puss though, hes afraid to run it at the track. There's also a 318ti with a v12 swaped also, look for it on google. Best I6 though I'd have to go with a BMW engine, heck how do you think toyota go the ball running with their I6, they reverse engineered a BMW I6. Parts for a BMW aren't really that bad, Pauter will make rods for around 1300, and arias will make almost any piston known to man.
