So, I like to try "different" beers at times. I've had the standard blueberry wheat, razzwheat, vanilla, chocolate, and a couple others. Ran into the liquor store today and stumbled upon one I found interesting....

Image

I love a good Banana Bread and thought I'd give this a try. They state:

"This unique brew combines all the traditional qualities and style of a Charles Wells beer with the subtle flavour of banana

Wells Banana Bread Beer is a popular beer in the Wells and Young’s range of ales. The beer has achieved a number of accolades including winner of "Beer of the Festival" award at CAMRA's London Drinker Festival in March 2002."

They also have a Double Chocolate stout and Waggle Dance (honey brew), which sound interesting.

Soon as they get cold it's a "go" :gapteeth:

Fat Tire isn't all that great, but it beats the run-of-the-mill crap on your average beer shelf, for sure...

Well, fuk me.....I lost my first reply

So....I agree with you on Fat Tire as it has a bitter aftertaste. Better than a Bud tho.

So, I'm drinking my first Banana Bread beer and it smells strongly of banana bread, which is a positive. Taste is "ok" with somewhat of a bitter banana aftertaste. While it's "ok" I would probably not consider this beer for another purchase as I don't like bitter.

Their pale isn't bad at all.

I don't much care for black lagers though.

My local bar keeps the black lager on tap.

as for budget beer, hard to beat High Life, PBR and Rolling Rock.

I wish we had more local breweries in Nashville. About all I see are Blackstone and Yazoo. Both are ok but not worth what you pay.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of dark beers either.

Gonna take the ones I have left to a Xmas party tonight and let others give them a try.

If you hate dark beers but want a dark beer, I recommend Bells Kalamazoo Stout. :gapteeth:

Had one a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it a lot. I have the last one sitting in my fridge waiting for an occasion.

To me it had a black licorice taste to it and I didn't like it. I tried the honey wheat and it seemed OK.

Black licorice flavor is called Anis (pronounced "ah-neese"), btw. Also, It's a shame you don't like that flavor, it's involved in some of the best beers out there...

Anyway, for a good all-around beer, I recommend this:

Can't go wrong with Hofbrau.

anise produces a similar flavor, but licorice flavoring comes from the root of the licorice plant. and it all tastes like a**.

Licorice plant is not typically used in beer because it's flavor doesn't hold up in brewed alcohol, as evidenced in many porters (because you can't taste it and they often use it to color that type of beer). :)

Or at least as far as I have researched.

2 of my buddies have groomed me into a novice beer snob over the last 18 months and I had the opportunity to try this seasonal beer last Friday. I went to a spot called The Local Peasant which has only local beers and food from local sources. 4 Calling Birds is from the Bruery in Orange County. Like Stone's Vertical Epic they're doing one beer a year that's meant to be opened up on the date of the last one brewed. This one they're going through the 12 days of Christmas and you're supposed to save them one year at a time and crack em all when the 12th one is released 12 years deep. This was the most amazing beer I've ever had, ever. Too bad it's impossible to find. I'd pay $40 for this bottle. The second pic is another seasonal that's in my fridge and apparently classified as a "sour". My buddy Matt said "Sour beers are mostly Belgium. Think like a fruity Belgium that has sour patch kids in it. Very very very complex beers. Slow sipping, not for everyone."

Really?
A friend bought me one at a bar once, the scent reeked of Skittles so strongly that I couldn't drink it. :P

I had a taste of this in recent memory (3 months ago or so), Southern Tier Creme Brulee Stout:

Very, VERY, rich. Something you sip on for a while, a dessert beer I guess. I remember it being too sweet.

I'm tried of hearing that when people drink a beer. Beer alcohol should not cost $40 for ONE BOTTLE. I don't care what it is.
Beer was designed to be the "every man's" drink, not some snobby crazy expensive stuff. If it doesn't have the smack of alcohol in it, it doesn't count as beer.

I'm a big fan of the Sunset Wheat but I'm also a huge fan of fruity pebbles.

Then don't listen. Just to rub it in I've got 2x $125 bottles of tequila that I'd pay $200 for and I'm not a rich man by any means. You know why? They're for special occasions. That's what you do. You splurge on things you normally wouldn't to celebrate.
