Okay, after hearing horror stories about trying to get Tokico blues (the stiffer, performance-oriented shocks) for our Q's, I did some searching. Spoke with a sales director for Tokico and he took pity on our plight. He put me in touch with a shop here in town that is willing to take GREAT care of us:

Here's the deal -

Rear shocks for 90-96 Q's: $55.01 EACH (#HU2892)Front shocks for 90-93 Q's: $64.41 EACH (#HU2890)Front shocks for 94-96 Q's: $66.06 EACH (#HU2890-A)

This is a total of $242 for ALL FOUR SHOCKS, which is a huge savings over any other shop, online or otherwise. According to the Tokico rep, MSRP from Tokico is $416!

They currently have over 100 rear shocks available. The fronts are arriving in mid-February, and the shop asked that anyone who wants a set contact them ASAP and "reserve" a pair so they can order enough (otherwise the wait will be longer). Rob has also promised to keep shipping costs to a minimum.

EDIT - CONTACT ALEX AT SOUTHWEST AUTOWORKS. Tell him you're a NICO member - He's looking forward to taking good care of us!!!

p.s. Joe at Scottsdale Infiniti has new OEM dust boots for $27 (F) and $61 (R) for the pair.

Hi, AZHitman. :ylsuper

A heck of a deal. Thanks for the help! I just placed my order for four shocks for my 95 Q - the rears will delivered in a week and the fronts in a month or so.

Thanks again!

Not Free! I'm getting a set but my shipping to Australia is nearly as much as the shocks. Still a GREAT deal!

Not sure Soph - Call and ask (or I can for you). E me off-board if you want me to make the call. The 866 number is toll-free.

Shouldn't be too much.

Hey guys! Sounds like a super deal! My 92 Q shows 108K, and seems OK, but, will probably spring for lots of things like new shocks, etc., at the 120K service, probably done down at T3, who did my chain guides, etc, 2 years ago. Question: Do I need the boots? My M30 convertible is in for the 60K service, showing nearly 118, and still gets admiring comments. Both vehicles are OEM, with the Q having Fittipauldi wheels. Other than that, bone stock for both, and I really intend to keep them thataway! Thanks in advance, guys! PS. A super deal out to Hong Kong via Asian Affairs (used them a couple of years ago out to Bali) for those who may be interested. Lots of Presidents seen there, with LOTS of R/Rs and Bentleys, too! Take care, guys!

Yep - Adding the $61 for the boots is still less than you'd spend on the shocks alone through shox.com (the next cheapest place to buy).

Good or bad makes no difference in this case. Tokicos are the only after market shock made for the Q.

Besides, Tokicos, especially the Illuminas are first rate shocks.

Hmmm. Interesting! I guess I will find out soon enough, since I am getting them for my Q.

Curiosity question: do you know if Koni makes shocks for a Q? I did a look for them a while back and did not see anything ...

Well, considering they list for OVER $100 apiece, I'd agree.

Especially since they've been the supplier of choice to Infiniti for over 11 years.

Do they make shocks for my 99 I-30 with 23,000 miles on it?

I believe so, as thy're Maxima units - Call 'em up - Their prices are sweet!

BTW, they also have the best price on Eibach springs for all Nissans/Infinitis!

Tokico is the OEM choice for Toyota too. Just took a set off my wife's 5000lbs+ Landcruiser . . . no leaks! Some brutal miles on those.

Hitman:

My '90 Q45 with HICAS needs new fronts at the least. Will these work for my application? I notice a lot of online parts sources specify "with or without active suspension." I'm not so much interested in the 4wheel steering as I am a firmer ride with great handling characteristics.

Well, first off, HICAS is Nissan's electronically-controlled rear-wheel steering option. Active suspension is a very different beast (but also available on the Q). An "Active" car will have the "a", as in "Q45a". If you have an "a", you'll want to do a search for "accumulators" on this site to find threads related to your car. If you only have HICAS, keep reading.

These Tokico's are exactly what you'll want for your application. The Tokico Blues are a tad firmer than the stock Tokico Blacks, and many of the Q owners here swear by them. I'd be inclined to say your rears are probably just as worthy of replacement, and if you're gonna do the fronts, just do all 4.

General consensus here is that the Blues make an enormous improvement in ride quality and handling, especially when coupled with the right tires and a good alignment.

You won't lose your HICAS by changing the struts - if anything, it'll be more effective.

Hope this helps.

The blues are 20% stiffer in compression [they overdamp stock springs] but are necessary to get the 30% increase in rebound stiffness which is needed especially on the rear...........the general concensus is that they FEEL like position #3 on adjustable illuminas. As with any shock they start a progressive decline from day one as the seals wear...they don't leak till after 100k but the nitrogen back pressure goes away by 60k.........so the loss of rebound control is what shows up first.

Thanks for the run-down Hitman! She's in the transmission shop this morning having drivetrain vibe problems diagnosed and sorted out. In good hands as the shop is one of a chain owned by old family friends.

I don't believe I have an Active Suspension. There is no little chrome "a" on the trunklid, just "Q45". And, I wouldn't know it has HICAS if it weren't for the HICAS idiot light illuminating on the dash occasionally. Didn't get any documentation with the car, and the previous owner was no road map either.

Does have struts instead of shocks. Would going with the Tockico Blue shocks as described work? If so, my order goes in immediately.

Thanks again,JEC

Yep - We use the term shock and strut interchangeably (what are they really?). From what you've said, you'll be real happy with the Tokico's. Make sure you ask for Rob AND tell him Greg from NICO sent you.

Take care!

They're not interchangible. A strut does what a shock does (dampen motion) and more. A strut locates the top of the suspension because there is no upper control arm to do the job. A shock is just there to perform the dampening function. As a result, struts are beefier, heavier items. Since Q45s have a suspension with an upper control arm, they use shocks.

just received my fronts and rears (94 Q) ten minutes ago! i don't have the dust boots yet, but i ordered the boots a few days ago because i was expecting a longer wait until the fronts came in. hopefully the boots will get here soon so i can start putting my new shocks on. a local shop will do all four for $360, but i think i will do it myself, this time. i think i'm going to put the stock springs on, instead of the eibach ones.

FYI - I didn't need new boots - Mine cleaned up real nice, and I gave them a good coating of rubber protectant for good measure.
