For most people the OS Giken is just about the same as any other clutch type LSD. And it's not lock 100% of the time because an LSD is only locked some of the time hence the name "limited slip differential"

that would be a welded differential my friend.

there no way its locked 100% of the time and its a clutch diff.

I do have a question actually:

welding a vlsd...

possible? I see vlsd center diffs welded... but never had my cover off or seen the internals on a vlsd to know how dumb my question is... ha

second question... would it be rediculous to weld a diff... and have two pumpkins? VLSD and a welded.... then switch before and after events...

you'd think you'd get quick at it...

may be a horrible idea, but though I'd throw it out there...

Ive swapped pumpkins like 10 times. You get to the point where it's like a 1.5 hour job with hand tools and with a friend to help position it in place.

Not worth it to swap before and after every event. I would want to kill myself.

I thought it is possible i mean its just welding it locked couplings will still be there just not work. Today my vlsd sucked went out for a highway cruise, and i guess the couplings were to warm and i couldnt get the tires to lock up to well.

i don't feel like reading the whole thread, but VLSD does work. I drifted on one for three years (and i held my own), and one of my good friends who was better than me had a VLSD too.

you just won't burn up both tires evenly, its harder to initiate and just generally sucks.

it's the open diff you stay away from.

Heres my opinion...

If your rich.... Go ahead and spend that $700 for a Kaaz Thier much fun and good for daily driving.. Welding your diff will have you chirping tires around the simplest turns and paranoid a cop will pull ya over

If your a budget drifter like me and smart... Id say Drop your pumpkin and get that effer welded for 50-70 bucks... and Save that 650-630 ull spend for just a LSD or that Ebay one for 300... AND GO GET SOME EFFEN TIRES!... Be smart people.. Either way VLSD/ Kaaz 1.5/2way/ Or welded itll be useless with tires having the steel braid hanging out..

Conclusion. Welded Diff is the best to go when drifting... Your car will break loose with no lag compared to a LSD... I had both. Kaaz 2 way and Welded... I preferr to man up and use welded for drift competitions... 2 way if its a daily driver.

So its all your decision... Are you more drift? or are you more of a 240sx cruiser? The choice is yours padawans... Attract more attention to your already SR20 illegal swap/KA-T... Or hide it cause the car is your daily driver

my car is stock with a vlsd and it sucks. 2 of my first crashes were because my vlsd kicked out when i didnt want it too or too late. its stupidly unpredictable and it sucks for drifting.....

Lol you have got to me kidding me man. Blaming a crash on a differential? Short of the gears themselves shearing off and the entire rear end seizing up that was driver error.

it all depends on your personal preference and budget. also, on first page of this thread whoever said you can check backlash by hand is an idiot, the difference of a few thousandths can cause premature wear, failure, and gear whine.

how do you explain a clutch kick and the rear not loosing traction as being a driver error? i mean i'm a newb but still.

figured i might add my .02... i liked my j30 for about a year.. good for dd but hate it for drifting now. its not a bad way to get started when your "drift car" is still a dd and weekend drifter, given the diff is in good condition and still locks. sometimes it will feel like drifting on an open diff again and your $250 diff upgrade was for nothing. also, i hate hate hate hate having the longer gears w/ the j30 now.

I see there is a lot of hate for the j30 haha. I have it, and it's awesome cause i'm not peg legging around town anymore, but it has locked sometimes when I haven't wanted it to. Example - light drizzle, I'm waiting to turn left at a red light. 2 turn lanes, I'm in the outside lane. I was about 3 cars back from the intersection, so there were cars in front of me and behind me. About halfway through the turn, the back steps out...I didn't change gears, change throttle, or anything. Back slides out, I countersteer and basically drift around the corner. Scared the sh** out of me. Had I been in the inside lane, I'm sure I would have tapped the car outside of me.

What am I going to do about unpredictable locking? Shim the diff. Shimming it puts pressure on the locking plates making the diff lock more easily.

so far in my drift career i have had open...welded....VLSD and now 2way..

I learned to deal with all of them. this is my order of what is better personally.

1.2way2.welded3.VLSD4.OPen

the Vlsd was somewhat cool but you had to initiate at high speeds and or you would have to fight the car sideways.

when i went to 2way............ I could tell the difference between welded right away as the 2-way felt amazing on the decel and accel. My transitions were never smoother.

Nope, took right off a Skyline GTS & slapped it right on to mine, well after putting new fluid in it.

Man, my gear set is GREAT for drifting, but HORRIBLE for road use.

Gear set = 4.36 Alot lower then stock. Opposite of the J30 gears

My mph is off about 17+ mph. I need to mark my driveshaft and count the revolutions to calibrate my speedo.
