Helical is the best hands down for daily if you want smoothness, and functionality as well as reliability. Clutch diffs can be DD'ed, but they are loud, require more frequent fluid swaps, etc.

There are s15 units on on ebay constantly.

I've done tons of backroad grip driving, and it is amazing compared to viscous. Feels like an open diff when just cruising around, except you have so much more rear end grip available. I have also done a drift event with it, and it felt great.

Yes.

1.) Look on ebay for them. I got mine for like 350 shipped, but that is because I took a chance on a risky looking auction from japan from a guy with low feedback. I got lucky and it's in great shape. The others are like 400-500 range.

2.) Maintenance is the same as with an open diff.

3.) Same as an open diff if installed correctly

4.) It must be swapped into a pumpkin that will fit in your car, meaning you must open your stock diff case, remove the open diff, swap ring gear, put the helical in, then check backlash and gear mesh to make sure that the gearing aligns correctly. Also, the ring gear bolts for s13s and s14s are 12mm, but the holes in the s15 diff are 13mm (to accomodate 13mm s15 ring gear bolts). Most people don't worry about this and simply install it with no problems, but if it worries you, you can use ford starter bolt sleeves over the 12mm s13 or s14 bolts to fit them snugly through the s15 diff.

This may sound bad, but it's really not. It's exactly the same as swapping a stock open diff into the stock pumpkin, with the exception of the ring gear bolt issue.

Read the FSM. Backlash is checked by using a dial indicator, and gear mesh is checked via a gear indicator dye.

As long as you put the shims back in the same way as they came out, in theory your backlash/gear mesh/bearing preload should all be almost identical before and after swapping. This was the case with both my diff, redcoupe's diff, and SCC's diff.

There is not much feedback available for those in s-chassis cars yet. The few that have installed them seem to like them, and no issues have ocurred yet, but I would still trust an s15 diff more.

damn, i dont have access to a dial indicator or gear indicator dye, nor have an idea how to use it crap this OBX is the only brand they have on ebay, is a limited slip any good for mostly daily driving and occasional track?

whats the main difference between em>?

You really need to do your research. A Helical differential IS a limited slip differential. There are many different types of limited slip diffs.

Dial indicators are cheap and easy to use. Gear indicator dye is even easier to obtain and use. Most people don't bother checking any specs after reinstall. I only checked gear mesh using the indicator dye, and it was dead on perfect. It is also possible to feel the backlash by hand, and it was very close or the same to what it had been before.

My bad, i said i was bein a noob, ive checked a lot of sites and read some stuff from library and the FSM, just not to good with the aftermarket nicknames, what is the helical considered, a 1/1.5/2 way differential, as im also unsure of this as well. I meant 2 ask the difference between a VLSD and a HLSD, since ive heard the clutch one for daily driving isnt good

A helical differential is neither a 1, 1.5 or 2 way. Those designations are for clutch diffs only.

I can answer all of your questions, but I think it is best if you do the research for those yourself. You will learn a lot. All of the questions in your last post have answers that are easy to find.

ive read them elsewhere, but wasnt sure, im trying to mostly find the opinion of which form of lsd is better, since a lot of people argue, you say u have a helical and that its better then a viscous and a clutch lsd

i know im checkin out some pages, any u reccomend? other then the ^^search and howthingswork

I never said that a helical is better than a clutch diff. For daily, yes. For ultimate best performance? Possibly, but it depends on the application.

Search on google.

for a cheap buy, DIY, mostly daily driving, but also track and autoX helical is the best choice?whats the downside 2 its use?

Yes, definately. Hands down best choice for those goals.
Seto wrote:whats the downside 2 its use?
Nothing really. Only downside is that it is harder to install than a viscous diff that is already in-pumpkin.

not of you track that car a lot.

back in 00 when i used to go drifting everyday with friends, one guy had a nismo lsd and he changed the oil every month! it lasted about 10 months

and now me...i've had a welded (that was only 80 bucks to weld) for about 4 years

and the 2 cars i had before that also had weldeds when i sold'em

if you drive a welded daily, then dont drive like an ******* daily. simple as that and you'll be fine

The only helical ones are the the OBX's, which people are saying you should wait a little longer cuz no one has em. I was thinking of getting my diff welded, but i heard in the rain its pretty bad, and the car gives out sometimes when you dont want it 2. plus bad tire wear??

I disagree, helicals are bad for drifting. its always adjusting power from a gripping wheel to a slipping wheel.

ive had my kaaz 1.5way in for about 18 months and i cant count the amount of events and competitions i have done on them (no little piddily parking lot events eithre. 80+mph initiations, 150 minute track weekends) and mine still grabs like new.

That is not how helicals function. When you are running a helical differential, you never have one wheel which is gripping and one that is slipping like with an open diff. Both wheels loose traction at the exact same time, and both spin, just like with a clutch diff, unless you exceed it's torque biasing ratio, which doesn't really happen unless you lift a wheel.

Your description in this quote is just flat out wrong.

i've HEARD that the 1.5 way setting makes the lsd last longer. is that true?

i wouldnt know cause once mine blew out i had it welded.

1.5 or 2 way is pretty much driver's preferance.

whoa, that one??

what else would u need to fit that on a 240sx?it comes with the half shafts, is the bolt pattern the same from the driveshaft??

Yeah, that's what I got. bolts in perfect on s13. On s14(like me) I had to change the rear cover. there's also the bonus of the r32 and s13 era diffs on the front bolts. there are no large bushings on the front two bolts like the s14 so it is mounted more solid to the subframe. The driveshaft pattern is the same.

Plus, R32 vlsd's came with more aggressive 4.36 gearing. Good for acceleration, bad for fuel economy

I'm happy with mine, for the money it is the best option for me.
