1st it heel-toe downshifting

2nd what kind of shoes are you wearing? its a lot easier in pumas compared to boots.

I'm 5'11 and i can do it fine, 2" wount make that much of a difference

but the first thing you have to do is learn your car, know what it sounds like at different speeds in different gears and what kind of rpm you need to get close to

once you get that down you just push in the clutch with ur left and the brake with your right toe, when you get almost to the apex of the corner rev the motor a lil higher than you need (to take in account rpm fall) by rotating your foot sideways and using the brake as a pivot point for your foot to hit the gas peddle

this is a good example of what you want your feet to do. Notice how he uses the heel toe to engine brake as well.

Im 6' 2" and I have no problems heal toe downshifting in either My S13 or my S14.

Im pretty good at it too considering my S13 has shot synchros, which means if I dont heal toe I cant downshift at all.

Maybe Im just good at leg yoga.

I am using shell toe adidas until I get my pumas. But yah, it just takes some getting used to.

psshhh u losers and umas i rock the heel-toe all day with skate boats on. Its really not hard after awhile. Just practice it all the time. Maybe it would help if you watch some of those jap vids that show the little screen of the foot work in the bottom corner.

I wear skate shoes all the time. It really doesn't matter what kind of footwear you're wearing if you know what you're doing.

For me, I always have half of my foot on the brake pedal, and the other half hovering over the gas, as opposed to people who have their whole foot on the gas and swing their heel over to the gas pedal when they downshift.

I think the 50/50 method is much easier and gives you less to think about, not to mention it does not put as much stress on your foot.

nice vid. example. He makes it look pretty damn easy. I guess i'm making it harder than it is...i try ta over extend my right foot which buts a lot of pressure on my ankles.

yeah the Japanese do it well...their right foots basically 45degrees which looks good but probably harder for people with big feet like myself. I like how the guy does it in the vid posted above...looks more practicle for the average Joe with bigger feet.

Heel-toe is good stuff. It's a must at the track. AXracer25 made a good point about knowing what revs you'll need at what speed and gear. Get yourself sorted out by learning to shift perfectly up and down through the gears. If you can shift all the way up without slipping the clutch, while keeping it smooth, you'll get a good feel for what revs are needed at what time.

Here's an example of spot on rev-matching both up and down in gears, and one little heel-toe (although it isn't under threshold braking). You'll have to excuse the shaky cam... my car likes to bounce.

If you don't have a flickr or yahoo account and can't see the video, just sign up lol.

The guy in this video has boots on and is using half of his foot on the brake and the other half on the gas.

Learn the basics and principals of it.

Use a vast amount of examples to learn from.

Then adapt to it, by creating your OWN method.

It is not one of those things you just put up. Once you learn it you will do it without evening realizing you are doing it.

Like stated above, you need to know your car a little bit more before moving onto this sorta thing.

Good Luck!

One Love,

Ghasty

That is more or less how I do it. I have pretty big feet (size 13 double wide) so the pedals are always pretty tight for me but I find this method to be a bit more comfortable and natural.

Same here. And I'm a bit tall on the 6'3" side.

My brakes are always in good shape, so it doesn't ever take too much pressure. I use the same method as freakyjason. Maybe it's just the ease since we got big feet, I dunno. But like said before, try a few things and see what works for you. It's not something that is done by the book, it's done however it is comfortable for you.

its not that bad... in my car w/ the razo pedals its pretty easy to "fatfoot" both the brake and the gas. when i get into other cars though it takes a while to get used to it and do the 45* thing since the pedals arent that close to each other.

I just started to learn this a couple of months ago. I always pressed the brakes too much and end up with my face in the wind shield. Practice makes perfect though.

Ive been pondering this topic for a while now too. 6'2" size 13, and i have spider legs, spac e is limited. i dont know but whn i try to think about rev matching and heel toeing it seems to never work, but when i drive i think i utilize it unknowingly as it just happens in the situation...

what is the video above, it doesnt work anymore...

anyone know who makes those adjustable pedalabove? saw a gas pedal a while back for $25 and havent seen anything like its since...

Ive seen people even angle the gas pedal at the bottom and have it pointing towards the brake, i guess to ease with performing the downshift.

LOL, the same thing used to happen to me. Sometimes I'd end up locking all four wheels.

I'm 6'2" w/ size 11.5 or so shoes. With the stock steering wheel my legs would hit the wheel while heel-toeing (45 degree angle method). With an aftermarket wheel (smaller diameter) I have zero problems.

I think the more common method is to angle the brake pedal.
