yeah, alarms are fine, but here are my recommendations:
in israel, where all of my relatives live, it's the law to have a password on your car, it has 5 buttons, is about the size of a turbo timer, and if you dont put in the password then the fuel supply won't work. you just mount it somewhere on your dash, put in the password (all that i have seen have 4 or 5 number codes), it will beep signalling that you have the correct password and can start the car.
a detachable steering wheel helps, but you would probably keep it in your car when you go in to see a movie or anything like that, but still, you could hide it in your trunk.
my best friend's cousin is a mechanic for ford, he puts a kill switch on every car that he buys, there is one either that won't let the engine crank if you are not pressing it (basically what our clutch safety switch does, come to think of it you could just mount that somewhere unseen and in reach) or there is one that if you flip it off, it kills the fuel supply.
come to think of it, if it's a good alarm, one that not only sounds when the car is being broken into but also does one of the above preventative measures, go for that.
