Gimmick or not?
I admit I'm a newbie to performance mods in practice, and only have a middling amount of formal education in fluid dynamics, but calling this a CAI seems like a bit of a stretch.
A true CIA will be using the vacuum created by the engine to suck in colder air from outside the hot engine compartment. This is sucking in air from inside the engine compartment, from an area that theoretically is a bit cooler due to the partitioning. But this is completely reliant on air being forced into the front ram - when starting from off the line at rest, there is no way that compartment is sealed tightly enough that the intake will be pulling air in from that front intake. So... at speed, there might be enough airflow coming through to feed the intake, but even then I really doubt it....
Again, newbie caveat, but I'd be interested in temp readings, both at rest and at speed inside that box vs. the open engine compartment in front of a normal WAI. Also would be interested if there could be a way to determine the volume of air moving through the ram of the intake, vs. coming into the box, to see if that setup really is feeding the intake a significant amount of outside area. It looks like the pipe is the same diameter, and I really doubt even at speed the air being fed into the box equals the demand from the intake. From my understanding, this setup would be pretty much useless unless there was a pretty decent temperature differential, and the volume of air coming into the box >= the volume of air being pulled into the engine at any given time.
