I just bought a '96 infiniti Q45 and am having a serious A/C issue as it only blows on Max. The Temprature is fine but this Max setting gets old after a while if you know what I mean. Any Ideas Guys??

Its the blower resistor, also known as the darlington resistor, they cost about $60 from Joe and it takes about 30 mins to fix yourself.

Ok in terms of searching the forums I didn't like most of the answers given as they replaced the entire subunit, that being the Fan Amplifier on a whole for $60.00. This amplifier is Darlington Array NEC 2SD1297 and can be found at this website http://www.cpcares.com/transistors/2SD1297.html under NTE Replacement part. Though the price of this part is about $20.00 this is the only expensive part of the actual Fan Amplifier once one is careful enough not to break the pcb poard while removing it from the interior of the "casing "or heat sink which is the large silver box everyone talks about. You can test the Darlington array by testing its hfe(current gain) with an electric tester and the voltage drop from the base of the transistor to the emitter which should be about 1.2V. So all in all if you are electrically inclined feel free to dig in if not pay the $60.00 for the entire sub-part. Will post Some pics if I get a digital camera any time soon.

As my great friend states: either way "Possible Minor loose , Major Win "

But by not reading the former posts, if the blower motor is not R&R, then the cause still exists and the Darlington Bridge will fail again.

Another post for Infiniti Online Mechanic Forum.

One must realize that the reason the transistor failed is that it was being overloaded beyond its MAXIMUM rated current/power by the load [electric fan motor 100watts]. Worn out slow turning fan motor just waiting for the right combination of heat and speed and duration to take out the replacement again and again.

Not fixing the problem just temporarily covering up the symptom until the next failure.
