Hi, everyone! New to the forum and recently helped my fiance purchase a 2011 M56x with just 36k miles (got a great deal - paid below KBB, also got the dealership to put 4 new tires on the car, new rotors and a new battery). :)
Few questions - what gearing does this car have at stock? I'm mostly just curious and cannot seem to find the info anywhere
Any worthwhile engine mods? I know stillen makes a pretty nice sounding exhaust for it, but I can't seem to find much else... like, not even much in the way of tunes or CAIs. I've heard that these are pretty choked from the factory and that a simple exhaust mod will add a good chunk of horsepower/torque, any truth to this? Are there any active exhausts available?
Any good exterior/interior mods? Again, cannot seem to find much here either.

Besides the timing belt/chain recall, is there anything else to watch out for?

Thanks!

First, welcome to NICO/Infiniti family!!

Lot of guys do exhaust, there are a few - if you use search (granted, not the best search engine system, but it can help you find some relevant threads)
Not a lot of aftermarket support for VK56, way more for VQ37 (use a lot of bolt-ons for the G37 since it's the same engine)
Best bet for tuning would be UpRev (hit up Seymour4: Joe Waldal - he's the man who can hook you up)

Timing chain is definitely something to do, and some of the engines consume oil so you should make sure yours is not burning up a ton, may want to hook up some PCV catch cans.
Again, trouble spots/areas/problems - you ought to do a search...this question has been asked a lot, no reason to start a whole new thread.

Congrats to you and your fiance on the new ride.

Craig

Thanks! I didn’t make a “whole new thread” just for that one question, though, and if I don’t know about the common issues then I wouldn’t even know what to search for.

Anywho, how do I put the wiper blades into service mode? They’re positioned in a way where you cannot lift them out from under the hood.

EDIT: found it! Looks like I just need to pull up on the lever twice to get the wipers in “service mode” :)

Think I just learned something new today  - but my wipers don't sit too far under the hood, so never thought about putting them in "service mode."

But with regards to some of the issues (not everything is specific to the V8 engine):
few guys have had some transmission issues - lagging, not shifting crisply
many more fellas seem to have electronic issues (Bluetooth periodically cutting out/not working) etc.
There's the fuel filler issue (can't fill up your tank without the pump shutting off automatically every time you try to fill it)

Might want to look at the infinitihelp.com recall page for your year/model: list-of-recalls-and-service-campaigns-t619545.html

I can’t seem to lift/raise/bend the driver side wiper while it’s in the “down” position on the m56x haha
Yea, I sadly know about the Bluetooth issues, was told by the service guys at the Infiniti dealership that it doesn’t play nicely with iPhones. :(
I noticed the transmission thing (outside of sports mode, mostly in manual mode with downshifting) but honestly figured it was more due to the outdated transmission that Infiniti is still using. When I test drove a Red Sport it had the same/similar lag. They really need to throw a new transmission in their cars, imo at least. :p

Thanks again! :D

Hello, welcome aboard!

Also, test out your vents while the season allows to make sure they all blow air at the temperature you have set. Basically, issues might arise from a faulty heater core or blend door failures.

Thank you! She’s had the car for about 4-5 months now and both the a/c and heat seems to work properly. The seat heaters seem a bit lackadaisical but I think I read that’s normal...?

Mind blown. Have had two M's for a total of like 8 years and had no idea this was a thing. Must try today lol.

Welcome to the forum! I bought my '12 M56x back in Sept 2015. Came off of a three year lease. 52k miles, all stock. Just a few suggestions from my experience with this model.
1. Yes there is a transmission update: https://x.infinitihelp.com/forum/showth ... 4131c& but it's not free, probably around $130

2. Like previously mentioned, not many mods for the V8. I recommend a custom exhaust vs a bolt on like Stillen. Yes the stock exhaust is the same as the 3.7, too chocked for me. I removed everything from the manifolds back and replaced it with a 2-1/2" X-pipe and sport mufflers. As far as the intake, I went with AEM dryflow performance air filters, and kept the stock airboxes. I did drill a series of holes in the sides of the filter boxes, to promote better airflow, like CAI, but still maintain the ram air set up.

3. The V8, being a DI engine, does use oil via excess blowby through the PCV valves. You will need to check it about halfway through your oil change. I did install PCV catch cans to catch the excess, but I still use about 1-1/2 quart every 5k miles.

4. Tuning options are Uprev, Ecutek, and a few folks have used the plug and play style like the Bullydog GT. I went with Uprev once I did my mods. This car runs rich from the factory. The tune will lean it out, as well as timing advance, transmission line pressure adjustment, speed limiters adjustment, etc, all of which will make your car run a lot better and gain MPG.

5.Yes on the timing chain recall, the dealer will run your VIN to see if it's been done. Loaner will be provided, takes a few days or so.

6. A lot of good info here: https://www.infinitihelp.com/index.php

Hover over the knowledgebase and all of your recalls and TSB's are there as well. Also check our own site for DIY's and FSM's.

Thank you! If I decide on getting a tune for the car, I assume the transmission update from an Infiniti dealer would be pointless since it would likely be overwritten by the performance tune...? The MPG gain sounds nice, my fiance seems to average around 18-19 in the car (my 2016 Mustang GT gets a lot better  ) - about how much extra did the tune give you mpg-wise? I'd guess 1-2-ish? (The tune will pay for itself! hahahaha)

If you decide to do the update, it'll be on the stock ROM in case you decide to flash back from the tune. Yes I can get 30 mpg running 55 - 60 mph with my mods, with 93 otane ethanol free gas @ $3.29/gal here in NC.

Filling up early one morning, with 44 miles to go, already traveled 310 miles.

I wish I could get ethanol-free here in NJ. :p
Looks like the timing chain recall was already addressed on this back in April 2017, the dealership took care of it and all other recalls when they first received the vehicle from auction. :)

Got quoted $800 for an uprev tune. Debating on it. Should I get an exhaust prior to the tune or will that not matter?

The app Pure Gas is excellent for finding ethanol free gasoline nationwide. I might have come across it on Jalopnik, but cannot remember as I have used it for several years. I am surprised that there are not any 100% gasoline stations in the Garden State as especially lawn mowers and the like often have major issues with ethanol.

They exist, but there are only a handful in the entire state, closest one is around a 40 minutes from me :(

Sorry to keep bugging you
But did you dyno your M56x? What wheel HP numbers did you get after the exhaust and tune? :woot:

I would do all of your mods first, before getting the tune. The $800 should include the $200 non core patch fee for the X model, if your ECU is not supported.

No I haven't done that yet. I do plan on it, as I am also curious. Don't expect too much though, from just an exhaust and intake mod.

Keep me updated, please! I’m probably a year out from any mods for the fiancé’s M56x as my 2016 Mustang GT lease is almost up and am planning on outright buying a 2018/2019 GT in the coming months. From the googling I did on M56 mods, I think you might be surprised by the dyno results: I saw one guy with just an exhaust and resonator delete claiming a 40whp increase - not sure how reliable the source was, though, but, if true, it certainly seems to show that the stock exhaust is choking the heck out of that V8! :)

Yes folks like to talk about gains and claims but show me the proof. I also plan on running at Farmington here in NC just to see straight line performance. My goal is to top the times currently held by Majestic on Drag Times. I believe that with my mods, I can do it.
