I think I regret moving to Ontario (8% provincial sales tax) from Alberta

Sorry about your extra 8% PST, but all the more reason to do a cross border deal. There were over 25,000 vehicles brought into Canada by private buyers last 1/4...but before you get all sorry about how much money it's costing Canadian Dealerships...

.the biggest Cross Border importers of 'used Vehicles from the U.$. were.......you guessed it..Canadian Car Dealers!

The Big Boys of the Canadian Auto industry are pulling out all stops to plug the border to regular folks looking to save thousands of dollars, off our over inflated prices...

from getting the parent companies to deny waranties, to intimidating dealers in the U.S. from selling to private Canadian buyers, all the while crying big Crocodile Tears.

Yup. Big problems (we're told) getting cars across the ON border . . . unless you run a dealership. Advertising "US prices and deals" on Toyota and Honda (as well as "domestics") -- but not Nissan.

$17,490 (before taxes, license, fees). I got a 2008 Versa SL 6 speed manual, sunroof, convenience package, audio package, ABS and sport package. I had to get it pretty darn loaded because the dealership couldn't find a 6 speed with a sunroof.

Have you talked to more than one dealership? Sometimes one will have a better price/package combination than the other. And since you have to drive all the way to Hillsboro anyway, you might as well go the extra little bit to Beaverton (if you haven't already). It might save you a few hundred bucks and/or get you a better package combination or even better financing.

$18,900 (includes freight and pdi) 6MT Versa '08 SL with Sports and Tech Package in Canada. With GST(5%), PST(7%), AC and Tire tax, it came to $21,600. This includes the grad rebate and 0.65% financing over 36 months.

What was the trade in? And what did they give for it?

I'm a little late in adding a few comments here. Please read on!

1st of all I purchased Aug 23rd /07 my '08 Versa SL hatch CVT @ Staduim Nissan here in Calgary. Price was $19,998 plus the AGE OLD Fed A/C tax of $100, Alberta tire tax & 1/2 the cost of the 3-window tinting of $220 which gave a subtotal of $20,340. I traded in my Dad's old '89 Aerostar (to get rid of) for $500. I then had to add GST of $1189.08. I put a good down payment to get the offered 3% over 60 month financing. All painless. And before the big spikes of the Canadian dollar.

BUT my attempted dealing with another Calgary Dealer, Brasso Nissan was far on the other end of the spectrum:

We spent the summer looking @ various other cars in the same class & liked the Versa. We did originally look @ a few versions @ Stadium Nissan 1st, & drove 2 versions (an auto sedan & a hatch 6-spd). We also headed down to Brasso to drive a CVT hatch as the other had none in the '07 model year. Then came dealing. Brasso was trying to locate an '07 SL Magnetic Grey CVT hatch without success. I received a call by one of the sales people & I was told they would honour the '07 interest rate of 1% to sell me an '08 of my choice. As I was out of town working, I said I would contact them when I was back @ home. This is after I did put $500 (on my visa) to start the bidding process, so to say.

After arriving home, my wife & I drove down that old Aerostar to make the deal. They took it for a drive, etc etc. Hmmm a $500 auction van & they were analising it as if it was to hit there show room floor! I was originally dealing with BRAD C., them some chick (YES, CHICK) as she wasn't much of a salesman. Then Brad again because she was away on leave. Then came BRAD P, business mananger. This is when things heated up.

We started the haggling process. 1st was his $100 offer for the van. Because his expertise of a typical noisy Ford P.S. pump was a "dangerous affair." Then his whining of "we can't give way" the Versa. I was willing to pay asking price (the $20k ) but I wanted $500 for the van, the spoiler, the 3 rear window tinting & the front 3M rock guard thrown in.

He threw the salesmans computer in my face and asked "Got a visa?" Funny, he used it for me $500 deposit earlier , "Check Car Cost dot com for the Versa cost" after he showed me some Brasso 'INVOICE' stating 'their cost' for the Versa. I countered: "Well you can throw any piece of paper with that sort of info on it, but it is up to me to choose to believe it or not."That made him more hot under the collar. As he claimed I was calling him a Liar. @ this point we were down to $300 or $400 difference between my price & his! Then I dicussed price points & the buyer. Versa price being one level, Sentra, Altima, Maxima, etc. being others: It's all based on what the buying public is willing to pay, etc. And of course he boasted that the were selling their Versa for X dollars without a problem. I just told him that I didn't want to get him upset, but he really was more like a Terrier with a piece a food in his mouth... And they refused to honour the 1% financing & could only give 3% on an '08 model!

Anyhow, after getting my $500 back we walked. Even being just $200 away from the sale!

My wife was pretty upset over the whole affair. She thought I was doing something wrong during the whole deal fiasco. She had never been party to a dealer car sale before, and her 1st was pretty unnerving!

The next day I actually called back to the dealer the the salesman Brad & worked out a compromise between our prices. BUT they had NO STOCK of the colour/model I wanted! I asked if they need a deposit. And I was told no & they would call when stock arrives.

Then I thought, "F**k, I'm not dealing with them!" I immediately drove over to Stadium & found a freshly arrived Magnetic Grey Versa SL hatch CVT on their lot ! I walked in & found JON B. whom I test drove a month before (during Stampede week). He asked what he could do to make the deal. I told him: $500 plus window tinting. I threw him the keys to the van. He looked @ the van, talked to his sales manager & in 15 minutes we agreed, with one change: We shared the window tinting cost 50/50. Done. I picked up the car about a week later after PDI, etc was done. Simple.

YES I did check US prices before all this started & @ the time of the sale there was maybe $1500-2000 difference between the country's models.

Since I originally had financing approved @/ thru Brasso I had to give them persmission to move that application to Stadium.

Then came the threatening phone call to my wife while I was working.BRAD P. the sale mgr called, upset that we were moving our deal. He claimed he could refuse, etc. Among other things. THIS DEFINITELY PISSED ME OFF !!! I don't care about the finance ****, but this guy is a loose cannon! And to top it all off, Brasso Nissan is CANADIAN NISSAN DEALER OF THE YEAR ! Give me a break! After speaking with older friends who had deallings with Brasso over the years, what a farce!

Hey Carioca,

It comes as no surprise to me that you found Carworms under those rocks you turned over trying to get a decent deal on your new Versa. I think the attitude of the Calgary Dealerships are the worst in the country. They think everyone in Calgary is making at least $50.00 an hour and with the house listings going up to Science Fiction prices, they expect to gouge Calgarians for every dollar they can and you won't care.

I guess in your case, they now have your photo on the Salesroom wall as a trouble maker...good for you.

There is no better way I know of getting their attention than to demand your deposit back...that sends shock waves of panic through the dealership right up to the owner.

He wants to know from the Sales manager how he lost your deposit , then the salesperson gets yelled at for not signing you up to a bulletproof contract and a big lecture for the guy who test drove your Old Ford Van, for letting you have your keys back.

Advice for Calgarians...shop around..Lethbidge is good, Red Deer will deal too. Edmonton..well they are on a different planet up there, who knows what they are doing..but I can guess it's not spectacular. When I bought our Honda Odyssey, 1 Honda dealership in Calgary didn't even respond and the other insisted that I come into dealership before they would give a quote. We bought the Van at Frontier Honda in Morrinville Alberta. 95% of the details done over the internet, and the best deal anywhere.

I'd go to a doggy park and collect a big bag of fresh dog turds and dump them on mr. Brads car. Nobody threatens me or my family, especially some DS car salesman

no trade in, just 2k down. which paid most taxes, and through another dealers presidents deal, we got this dealer to lower down to that. plus another $750 from that dealers presidents day savings.

the newbie salesman helping up said that they lost money on this car, but at the end, if they meet the yearly versa quota nissan writes them a huge check

Thanks for the response (all who did!).I did even phone a few out of province dealers as well. Not many (@ the time) had what I wanted. It's like you said, it's a "take it or leave it" attitude they have here. If anyone remembers the movie FARGO & the dealer salesman scenes, sometimes I think of just that, about Brasso Nissan! So far we are happy with the purchase. And of course a car is NO investment, it's just how much $$$ one wants to lose over time...

Cheers

It can be quite complicated bringing over a new vehicle across the boarder. I know for a while people were considering to do so when buying big ticket items. But now, take the Ford F150 trucks, they have dropped here in Canada over $10k. My company just picked up a new '07 XLT F150 super cab just over $30k, whick listed over $40k last year!

Carioca...

you gota Lada? That's amazing that you didn't trade that on the Versa.

The 'Curber' who picked up your old Ford van probably had it sold out of the Bargain Finder the next day, too bad you didn't stick them with the "Built in Syberia By Disidents, Lada"

That trade in sitting in the back row just might have been better revenge than Doggy DoDO dumped in the $ales managers Maxima.

You are right on with the comment about buying new cars and thinking they are some sort of an 'investment' they are of course....right up there with a bundle of sub prime mortages in default.

Man, I feel like the stupidest person born. I got into a lease on my '08 SL, pretty well equipped (no abs, no sunroof, no convenience package, no stereo upgrade) and somehow signed for a cap cost of $18,000 USD. Payments are low, put a big down payment, but even at the end of the lease, I doubt I'll be buying this car at over $8,600 residual. Watch out for these big dealerships. They pull tricks. I had the cap all worked out, I liked the price and they somehow changed it on me by having me come back 4 times the same day I was there for 7 hours. I was tired and just wanted it over with so I signed without noticing the tricky changes they slipped in there. Maybe I'm sweating over nothing, is $18,000 way too much for the SL without every bell and whistle? Feeling sooo stupid in L.A.

Got my SL Hatch CVT with conv pkg and ABS (mats, splashers, and kick plates) for 16300 out the door- before wty. With the extended wty 7/100000k I am paying $274 for 60 months @ 2.9 apr. Maybe the Versa market was a bit slow in Baltimore.

Well, I got a Versa! Magnetic grey '08. I recommend talking to the internet sales manager, if your dealership has one. My "haggling" took 30 seconds, got it at invoice (sport, sunroof, conv., audio, XM, ABS, CVT, kickplates, mats) == 17,241 after $1k rebate. Now for some orange .. I think that hood/hatch stripe might be a bit much though.

Hi,

Just got my new Versa, so I thought I would share...

Keep in my mind I am in Canada!

So I got a 2008 Nissan Versa SL 6spd in blue onyx (they call it blueberry blue here)

No options. It included lock nuts for the wheels and carpets (I guess that's standard).

I paid 19500$ out the door (includes taxes, fees, destination, ...)

Now the best part : 0.65% purchase financing for 60 months.

Which gives 330$/month.
