  My Vert 5speed swap

Should be starting Friday, I'll use this thread to update with any info/pics hopefully.

Any thoughts or recommendations? Been almost 6 years since my last 5speed swap on my old coupe. Friend had a wrecked car that we pulled everything from and all I've purchased was a basic Exedy clutch.

Oh and did get my VLSD back (bought in '03 from PDM with 30k km on it, sold with old shell after total, and its made its way back without it being in another car the whole time). And picked up an alum 1-piece DS used from a friend as well.

Wiring is the only part I hate, and I've never dealt with the top wiring on Verts.

Wish us luck.

Started last Friday.

Some of the most pain in the a** bolts/parts ever.

One tranny bolt caused us to removed the DP and still barely get it broke loose. The AT metal 'slug' in the crank took over 2 hours and dozens of tools used by a friend to get out.

Did get the VLSD, the pilot bushing, and new rear main seal installed. That's about it.

Still to do:
install flywheel
install clutch
swap crossmembers on the trannys
install 5spd tranny
install DS
move steering column out of way to get AT brake pedal out
install MT clutch/brake pedal (cut hole for clutch master)
do wiring

A few random pics:

The whole house is a 'man corner'.
The stands are on the jack points, so yeah should be safe.
Did get the OEM flywheel and exedy basic clutch mounted today.

Yeah, saw that, most places are right at $50, just been hoping for a deal.

Have to get a new shift boot and probably some cheap short shifter as well, just looking around for good deals. May try the cheap ebay B&M knockoff for the shifter.

I bought one of those during my swap, one of the bolt holes didn't line up, and one of the guys at work said his rattled like crazy when he had one. So I opted to get the other cheap ebay short shifter.

Swap is coming along nicely though.

Hmm, might still try it. Usually some rattling can be helped with changing to the OEM white nylon bushing. It is cheap though, so won't kill me if it doesn't work out.

...trying to patiently wait on tax documents.

biggie just giving you a heads up on the pedal installation if you haven't gotten there yet. If you can, pull the dashboard out. it only takes an hour and it makes a world of a difference when drilling the holes. I pulled the dash and then that a/c duct, and it was so much easier to do everything. You might even have enough room if you just take off that a/c duct.

Good luck

Just dropping the steering column to do the pedals. Just waiting on a friend to bring a couple tools to try to finish up. Hopefully this weekend.

I assume the engine is still in the car. If so you'll need to jack up the front of the engine by the oil pan (gently and not too much as to not dent the pan). When the AT tranny comes out the engine tilts forward, making it harder to line up the input shaft.

i used one for my swap, same flaw that the knockoffs have one hole doesnt line up, i had a greddy shifter housing that i used instead of the flawed one. other than that the shifter is great.

as for the auto pilot bushing adapter thing in the flywheel i used a pipe wrench to twist it off while a friend held the crank from turning with a ratchet. took less than five mins just a tip for any future guys or girls looking to swap their tranny.

Apparently they make a tool with a slide hammer than can get it out and you can use a 1/2 inch extension, stick it in and pry it out as well.

Found that out after we spent all the time with everything else. We tried the pipe wrench/vise grips, it spun but wouldn't come out.

No, got it out last weekend. Just waiting on a friend to have some time to help/bring some tools I don't have.

Have to finish getting the steering column out of the way (alarm wires are holding it up), then cut the clutch hole, mount clutch/brake, and put in tranny/DS.

I also discovered that the car apparently was wrecked sometime, not too bad, but have some warps/crinkles/holes/rust under the battery tray. So after the 5 speed is done I'll be taking off passenger fender/bumper and seeing what I can do.

I was really thinking of picking up one of these shift knobs after trying many different ones. I used the OEM stock 240 knob, two or three MOMO knobs, a S15 knob, then a Nismo chrome aluminum one...which I loved...until the summer. It would get so hot I would have to cover it with a sock or towel. Then I came across one called The Hammer, it's a weighted stock looking leather shift knob. I always had read about the great feel of a weighted shift knob with a short shifter...so I tried it....and it's the best hands down (to me). And it's less then $20. It's actually a Mitsubishi stock knob. Here is a link:

Got the pedals in. Just have to take the clutch line off of the slave/dampner to route behind the A/C line and then put in the master cylinder.

Pilot bushing is too tight though, gotta rent the puller again and swap the pilot bushing, so tranny isn't in yet.

Oh, also found a step drill bit that goes up to 1 3/8 inch at harbor Freight, it worked perfectly to fit the clutch master cylinder through the firewall.

I was going to keep it since the hardline was all in one piece and wouldn't need to be bled. Now since I have to remove it to route the hardline, I'll just bypass the dampner. Just have to wait to get a hold of a flare wrench to break them loose.

Ice/Snow for this weekend will probably stop a friend from bring tools/helping. Probably won't get done, crap.

I'll try to get pics tonight or tomorrow of the pedals progress.

MDM-100 should be here today, maybe see how I'm going to route it over to the pocket below the radio or where else to put it.

Damnit. Pilot Bushing puller from AutoZone is too big to even fit inside the bushing. Have to go get the one from Advance. Of course who knows when I'll be able to leave the house, only thing that's driven in front of my house is 4-wheeler.

So much productivity this weekend. Did clean up the garage a little and swapped out the old boot with the new ebay one, good fitment, definitely worth the $11 or so it seems.

If you can get a hold of a Matco dealer get the pilot bearing remover. Part#: CP55600

It saved me a lot of hassle in the swap trying to remove mine. I can make sure it will make a seal with the auto one if you want me to.

Boot looks a lot better than the old one, still need invest in a new one too.

Go to autozone, rent a pilot bearing puller and a slide hammer and then return when done, it'll take you 5 minutes, vs a day with other methods.

Read a couple posts up, did that , the one from autozone is too big, have to get another one. But stuck due to snow/ice right now.
