Quote »Motor Trend's Scott Kanemura sat down with Michizio Niikura, the president of MINE'S Motor Sports, the first aftermarket firm to get its hands on the new Nissan GT-R. The conversation centered on the roadblocks Nissan has put in place to stymie high speeds and limit modifications to the GT-R.

We've previously reported on how the GPS system fitted to the GT-R would remove the 111 mph (180 kph) speed limiter when the car arrives at a track, but according to Niikura, it will only work on pre-approved racetracks. However, the GPS sensor doesn't automatically remove the limiter by itself, it has to be manually changed by navigating through a series of menus on the GT-R's touch screen. While having to go to a Nissan-approved track is daft in its own right, it's even worse when you leave. After the track day, owners are required to head on over to a Nissan High Performance Center where a $1000 safety check is performed. Don't do it and the factory warranty is void.

Another rumor that began circulating after the Tokyo Auto Salon has also been confirmed: aftermarket wheels are out. Supposedly, all the GT-Rs on display at TAS had to be driven in on the stock rollers, jacked up and then fitted with the tuner's chosen wheels. Due to a sensor mounted on the valve stem, if the GT-R is driven with aftermarket rims, an error code is thrown on the dash. And although MINE'S has fitted a custom exhaust to their shop car, they've found that any modification to the intake system causes the ECU to go haywire.

While all these findings are disturbing draconian, GT-R owners here in the U.S. won't have to worry about the speed limiter/track day issue. Nissan has said that the GPS system won't be implemented here in the States, but the future of tuning the GT-R remains questionable. Top tip Zac![/quote]hahahahaha

Your distaste for the new GT-R is much like mine, except you voice your opinion. I don't have to, because you usually cover all the bases before I even get a chance to post :P

For over a year i have been saying what the the R will wind up being and most people just stuck their fingers in their ears and went naaanaaaanaaa. Well gents, ta-fricken-da, how bout that ****? Nostradomus ain't got game like this.

The GT-R went from the tuner's dream to the manufacture's dream for the people.

The only thing you can do to the damn thing is exterior or interior work, and who knows if that will trip off the ECU and make the car shut down.

Want to make your new GT-R faster? Too bad, can't do a damn thing because Nissan thinks they can't be beat. Want new wheels? Too damn bad, because your 90k car will be a lawn ornament. You have to look just like everyone else.

The GT-R used to be about tunability, creativity, and originality. Now it's all cookie cutter, and who knows if there will ever be change for it.

I don't think you can even wire it with a 25hp resistor.

It has close to 500hp and costs over $70k. Why would you want to soup it up anyways? Add an exhaust and the value will just go down.

Hell the wheels are wide and light already - no need to swap them out.

The 111 is only for the Japanese versions. USDM ones will still have a speed limiter but it will be higher. I'm sure they will crack the ECU and you will be able to disable it. Without the speed limiter mine's topped out at 185ish.

I will admit, getting the tires changed at a dealer ($350 per tire in labor) is lame.

Some of us like our cars to look somewhat unique and sometimes this requires swapping out wheels & such. Why do people soup up Vette's? Not really because they don't have enough power but more so that they can brag about how much power it has...and besides that it is fun tinkering and seeing how much power you can get out of them.

I see where you're coming from. I guess in my opinion though it's unique enough as is. If I wanted a totally unique car I'd get a civic paint it purple and put s14 headlights on it hehe. If I wanted to make lots of power and brag about it I WOULD just get a corvette. Sneeze on an LSX and get 50hp without worrying about all the crazy GTR electronics it would be a lot more practical than building a GTR.

just my $.02

I have about 540 crank hp and looking at throwing a set of heads, Intake Manifold, ported Throttle body, and meth kit in to eek out another 100hp or so out of the stock block.

My FD would be wicked fun with 500rwhp too.

Face it guys, the world where we once lived where people could do cool things is gone. Welcome to the future. It sucks. The only way to get out?

The Arial Atom. Thats where my money is going if I get that much. We always talk about how much nav an airbags and all that crap is ghey and it adds weight, and we just wish someone would make a car without all that crap. Here it is.

The Ariel Atom is the coolest car, yeah there might be things that are faster and more track focused like the Radical but the Radical is an ungly little turd. Country club style tracks with limited access will become places to exercise cars like this as cars like the GTR will become more and more common place. And sadly more un touchable by tuners.

I weonder why Nissan has their panties in a bunch, being soo strict about this car. Its kindof a good thing I guess, but not even being able to pur an intake on it is alittle too far. Its also very true as someone mentioned...why have 500 hp if you can only go just over 100mph. Also that tech inspection is waaaaay out of hand. I can see why people would have another car in mind than a GTR.

people use your common sense. japan is minute compared to the us. the dont have the room for a 500hp production car. the us has lengthy highways with plenty of room. we are completely different countries with different laws and cultures.
