But the same set up that I have, if I had done it in saltwater, would have cost me up to $1k more. The fish are more expensive, and they are MUCH harder to care for.

Is it tough to keep Arrowana, or are they relatively easy to care for? I really am considering putting a large fishtank in my game room....
Arrowana are easy to care for if you get a mid-sized one. Small (under 8") are harder because they mainly eat tiny feeder fish and bloodworms. When they are larger (if you train them to) they will eat uncooked shrimp from the freezer. I feed him shrimp from Costco. He also eats cichlid pellets, and anything that swims in there. I try to stay away from common feeder fish, since many of them suffer from some type of sickness, and can pass it along to my fish. Crickets are a good suppliment for them as well, and fun to watch them eat. Basically, yes, they are a hearty fish, and easy to care for. Just like it was mentioned earlier, get a good lid, and put some weights on it. I have 10lbs holding down mine, because they are awesome jumpers.
