  KA-T GT35 Build.. cont..

I figured i'd get you guys up to date with my build, if anyone is interested.. I know people like pictures.

So here's my last thread, and specs on my current build.
http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=207038

So now i'm putting the 810cc injectors in place of the 400cc, the GT35 in place of the T3 Super 60, and a tuned enthalpy ecu. I'm going to run somewhere around 12-15psi on my stock engine until my built motor is complete, or the stock one blows up.
The built motor will consist of:
Turbo 240 Sportsman Rods
Super Tech 9:1 comp pistons
Block is decked, hot tanked, bored over and honed
Balanced rotating assembly (flywheel, crank, crank pulley)
Metal head gasket
ARP Rod bolts, ARP main and head studs
Rebuilt head, ported and polished, 3 angle valve job with '91 cams
New OEM timing kit, oil pump, water pump etc.. basically replacing everything

I have to replace the 5 bolt downpipe flange for the turbo, make a new hot pipe since i'm coming out and around the p/s reservoir instead of straight down like before, also making the hot pipe 2.5" instead of 2" for the bigger turbo.
But for now here's a few pictures of what it looks like at the moment. Take a look at the link i posted at the beginning of the thread to see what has to be changed.

GT35 vs T3 super 60

IAP Manifold +GT35 Clearance, pretty good.. I have ABS and such

pic of the car (getting painted white in a few weeks)

Lookin' good, but the turbine being that close = melted BMC. Heatshield o'clock.

yeah.. the other turbo was acually closer.. it had a larger 5 bolt pattern, which is guess is strange, i was hoping they'd be the same..

so wait, you are swapping a GT35 for a T3 super 60?, isn't that 1 smaller? i guess you want faster spool?

noooooo... in my first post I said "the GT35 in place of the T3 Super 60"
I guess the pictures could mislead you.

I'm not sure. I want to get rid of it, but i'm not sure how much to ask. It should only have about 8k miles on it.

Well, I got my car running yesterday with the new turbo. It's a HUGE change.. full boost isn't until somewhere between 3500-4000 instead of like 2800 with the super 60. But it hits hard. I'm running 12psi... it feels a lot faster than with the other turbo, as was expected. I'm going to get some video tomorrow probably.

I need to still move the p/s reservoir, and make my new hot pipe. As well as get my ecu tuned, so I can use my 810cc injectors and up the boost. But for now, it's running 12psi pretty good with 400cc injectors. Here's some more pictures.

New filter

a little dirty

p/s reservoir is pretty close to the compressor

Thanks!
I'll get some video today.

So, one thing I noticed, which is probably normal.. I go out and tune during the day, and get perfect 12-12.5 afr at 12psi.. then I go out at night, when it's about 20 degrees cooler, and they hit like 13.5 afr.. is there any way around this with the SAFC II or do I just need to tune when it's cold out.. I'm getting my ecu tuned soon, but for the time being.. I drive during the day and night a lot.

You are probably maxxing the 370s if you are at stock fuel pressure..

Try opening them up some, but I doubt you are going to get much more fuel out of them..

It shouldn't really lean out at night as the MAFS should read the additional air coming in and add fuel as necessary..

I'm using 400cc injectors acually.. but i'm sure they're close to being maxed... My high throttle map is like:

3400 +20
3800 +25
4200 +30
4600 +35
5200 +35
5800 +30
6200 +20

That got me pretty good afr's during 70 degree weather in the day time at 12psi. Then last night I went out, same tune, and it was bouncing from 13-14.5 afr @ 13psi.. so I turned it down to 10psi and it held pretty good around 11.5-12 ... so I don't know..

I don't know what I should do to tune. I have 810cc injectors just laying here, everything is ready to go. I'd like to up the boost to 15psi and acually get a decent tune instead of this safc. Tuned ecu seems the easiest route. I'd like to go with MS II but I don't think that would be a good idea for me. This is my first car that i've worked on. I've done all the work. I've never driven a turbo'd car, or a fast car for that matter. So this is quite the accomplishment for me so far. I just don't want to blow my **** up. haha.. if I do, I have a built motor waiting to go in.. as soon as I get my rods.

So basically, what would anyone recommend I do for tuning? With a tuned ecu I wouldn't have to get it retuned with my new engine, because the only difference would be compression.

Yea I saw 400cc and 370 stuck in my mind when I was typing because 370's are close to 400s and I was guestimating that you are maxxing them..

Buy an ECU tune... It might not be 1337 hax like MS or any of the other DIY methods, but at least your car won't blow up.. Esp for the first setup, you need a good experience or you'll get out of Nissans..

I think Cory might be right about the injectors maxing out. They simply cant provide enough fuel to match the cool dense air at night.

True.
What ecu are you running, Enthalpy? I want to go that route, but i'd like to acually talk to someone before I place my order... to make sure i'm not waiting around forever.. how to I get ahold of Scott ? Or should I just order it and send my ecu and everything will be fine? I worry about stuff like that because i've had to wait so long on rods twice now, even though they said they were in stock.

your car must pull like a freight train now when the boost hits. and i HIGHLY suggest that you get a heat shield for the turbo or get a piece of metal to block off the heat from the plastic reservoir. post up dyno figures when ur done as im curious to what ur making.............

Oh yeah.. I have a heat shield.. I just don't like to put it in the pictures, considering it's just a bent up licence plate :D

Boost hits really hard.. it's weird at first, because you floor it, and it just kinda goes like stock then about 4k rpms it hits 12psi and you have to shift pretty much immediately, it's fun... As soon as I get my ecu, and put my new injectors in, in about 2 weeks i'm getting on the dyno and going to push about 15-18psi.. I hope my stock motor doesn't blow.. it's never been touched beyond the valve cover.

I'd keep the boost at 10psi until you get the 810cc's in. Remember the closer to stoich (14.7:1 AFR), the hotter the burn and the hotter the piston gets. I think we all know what happens when a KA leans out and burns a piston (or four). Thats why I like to keep my AFR in the 11's on stock pistons, especially on pulls that last longer than 5 seconds.

Also, since you arent doing anything for timing...ahem...you're asking for trouble !!!
Proper ignition timing (retard) is more important for preventing detonation than having a rock solid AFR...

Sounds like a pretty insane top end setup though. Good for highway pulls!

I have my base timing at 16*BTDC to be safe.. so out of boost it feels a little slower, but i'd rather not blow it up... but i'm going to agree with you on the 10psi. I'm going to keep it there. Hopefully i'll order the ecu tune on monday. I need to do body work anyways.

btw, check the link in my sig for a short video from last night... me doing a burnout and some little donuts, it was pretty wet out though.. :\ and a video of my friends STI doing some too..

wild_maxx and I went out today and got a quick video. I'm only running 8psi since I don't want to blow the motor up...yet...

This video is pretty much identical to the video I made with the super 60... and the car is probably just as fast, or faster at 8psi as it was at 12psi on the other turbo...

here's the link, check my sig for the other videos.

You guys should check out the GM stand alone thread. I know people make good power on Enthalpy tunes but I don't think there is anyone tuning ECCS that matches what these GM guys are doing.

looks good. Have you driven it yet? Does it spool a bit sooner since the turbo outlet is no longer at a 90* angle right out of the compressor?

ahh nice.. I probably will move it when the engine comes out. for now i just shortened the lines like 4" so it wouldn't be sitting against the compressor..

no, i haven't driven it yet. I have to get the piece that connects to the intercooler welded.

Update time.. kind of.

I finally got my Turbo240 rods in, which means my engine should be back from the machine shop next week. So i got started on tearing into my car again. We pulled tranny, drive shaft, and also dropped the rear subframe so I can get rid of this damn HICAS crap first. Then Shawn (wild_maxx) and I pulled the engine, tore it apart today so he could use the head/block for his KA-T build, didn't take us long at all.
so here's a few pics. more to come as I clean things up and such.

engine bay is super dirty and greasy.

HICAS bull****

No HICAS bull****

pile of old stock parts, exhaust, random stuff..

PS. I lied about running 12psi. My gauge said 12psi, but I put a friends in and i'm acually running 8psi. My gauge was way off. So 8psi was basically maxing the 400cc injectors with the new turbo.

haha.. yeah, they're pretty sweet..

So I didn't get too much done today, I acually didn't really plan on doing anything, until I looked at the engine bay again and saw how ****ing dirty it is.. so I started cleaning it.. I got the fuse boxes and crap moved out of the way, and other random stuff.. and started going at it.. here's after about a half hour of cleaning it.. it's gross..

hopefully tomorrow will be a much more productive day. I need to finish removing all the hicas stuff from the rear, and install my eliminator bar, and vlsd..
