Thinking about buying a Q? Check this out!
2:49 PM 12/5/2006
This is the FAQ thread....
First of all, welcome to the worlds best Q45 forum!!! Q45 is a great car, one that is very much underestimated (and for whta you get, its a great bargain).
OVERALL, compared with other luxury cars that cost roughly $50,000, they are the cheapest to maintain and operate. Very few failures of parts that isnt related to neglect or old age...
When you buy a Q of ANY year, plan on spending some cash on getting it right... Plan on changing every fluid in the car (brake, tranny, diff, oil, blinker etc, etc) and changing every wear part (shocks, all rubber suspension components, brakes, tires, spark plugs, filters and engine hoses) before you think about doing anything else.... Q45s are NOT a turnkey car, they are going to need some attention to make them reliable. Once theyre running right, they are very cheap to operate and keep running right. They are very desireable because compared with other luxury cars, very few components fail....
Check out http://www.q45.org for many other articles and things relating to Q45s.
If you own a 90-93 Q45 and you have not heard about the "chain guide" issue, then click the following link. Do not proceed until you do this, you're engine could be toast the next time you turn the key! http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=25201

FOR ANY1 who is lookn for a luxury car!!! of course there are gonna be some repairing on it, but its worth it!!! the Q is like a unknown car to the world!!! if u ask ppl about a infiniti, they would say g35. but no one would ever say Q45!!! its so unknown and rare that its great to know u even own one!!! its like owning a ferrari!!! u don't see these in every block like camry's and accords!!! so BUY A Q45!!!!
Not trying to bring down the spirits of future Q owners but my brother purchased one a while ago and the repair and maintenance costs where unbelievable. But if you have alot of money to use on repairs and you want to own a cool unique car, than by all means go for it.

Nah. The parts, even new from a dealer are still inline somewhat with typical Nissan prices, and if one has a "Pull A Part" locally, they can get anything for their Q for pennies on the dollar. My local one has 2 right now, fully intact other than the AFM's and fuel pumps (240 kids rob those). Due to the being rare, they tend to sit unmolested in such a place. In addition, the engine is layed out relatively simple as is most of the car, so virtually anyone can work on one. Try to say the same about any other car in this class.
If a person buys preowned (non-warrantied) Lexus, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, etc that has a lot of problems, the cost of repairs will also be expensive. But yes, it would suck to purchase a luxury car thinking it will be trouble free to only end up shelling out tons of dinero just to get it running right.
how much a egine and tranny usually go for cause im thinking about putting one in my s13
LOL, are you serious? Sure, spend thousands to cram such a drivetrain in, assuming it will even fit. Then in the long run you have an extremely front-heavy 240 that might run OK at best...as the electrical conversion alone would be a total nightmare...not to mention Q's come primarily as automatics and use the dozens of sensor originated data to shift, control fuel management, etc.
Why not just get a TT Z32? It has 300hp right off the bat and you can drive it home (and it looks and handles better than the 240 ever will no matter what you spend on it). Guess that is the silly "old man" approach, lol.
well f you too, but i was just wondering geez, ill probably end up doing the ls1, kat or vq35 so calm done. its just a thought to see how much one runs
More than it's worth. FWIW, most alien engine swaps run at half power anyway...as they tend to run in fail safe mode (aka limp mode) since several CPU inputs and other parameters are incorrect, ignored, etc. But I guess the point is the swap itself, not the end result. As an "old guy" this is the part I have trouble with.
In other words, I don't see throwing several thousand at a rough 240 to (potentially) make it run like, well, a $3000 Z32. Heck, a $2000 Q45 in stock form is likely faster than most of these frankenstein conversion S13's...but I guess you can't drift in a Q45 (assuming people still do that, lol).
its all good, i see people all the time that have great cars(s13) that have a good ls1 or kat 1jz etc. yes some mess up and start off nasty but if you get the right stuff you`ll be good. i used to have a 300zx but it was a 2+2( ) and it was ok, beat hondas an stuff but not that fast. im just looking to build a fast reliable s13 that can beat gt`s, ss, vette(co5) cause around here they dont do much with them and think there the fastest car ever lol. And from most forums i see that i can buil a great ka-t for around 3k to 4k- 300-350whp. (even though my goal is 450whp) And that my friend, will mak me happy when i fly by those cars(when mostly stock .
so anyway i go with these(ls1,kat,or1jz) it will be fine as long as i do it right.....and take my time(hopefully)
so at the end of the day you can either buy a 3300 pound 300zx for about 3000 to 5000. you can buy a decent 2800 240sx for 1500- dump a turbo kit(cheap one) for another 1500-2500 and it will smash a 300zx.
but still much love to the 300zx (tt)
if i had a chance to get a hold on one that was cheap but still really nice. i would be more then happy to get one.

Honestly elwesso, I'm saying this in an effort to acquire ten posts so I can post a classified for my Q. But dude, you're so right. My '90 Q has been the sweetest car. I spent $4,000 eight years ago and bought it from the original owner. She's still as classy as ever- but now her owner is a poor college student who needs to find her a new home. And by the way, you guys have helped me out a lot in the past when I've had questions about my car. I really appreciate it.
Yeah so awful, lol. Only an additional 97 lbs over a equally equipped 2 seater, yet with better ride and grip, due to the longer wheelbase...not to mention a fully flat extended hatch area when seats are down. How dare they make an additional model like that.

Uhhh, did you ever consider that they actually bought fast cars. Why would you even care what they do or think? Their cars are faster...so what? They are supposed to be. My neighbor has a much larger house. Maybe I should go out and start adding rooms to mine, lol.
Don't get me wrong, everyone's gotta have something to get into, but street racing in 2008...and throwing real money into an initally slow, tired looking car just to (potentially) show up people with fast, late model cars??? Guess I am too old to understand that one. I will admit that I did like F&F however, but that was in 2001, lol.

Let's assume for a second forums / posters are accurate and honest on such things...if so, then sure, you may make a (highly pressurized) 240 have the similar power to a barely touched TT 300ZX. Of course it will take months of trial and error and quite a bit of money to even get started. By comparison, spend $6K on a Z32, and you are done (w/o opening the hood).
FTM, write back in a couple months and show me your dyno chart. If you make 200 (safe, reliable) hp at the wheels for less than $3K invested and anything less than a month of time / labor invested, I will be surprised. Of course this would be assuming it will pass emissions, idle smoothly, run cool, and get over 15 mpg, running on pump gas (other than E85).
Sure, people do get the results you speak of, but probably not the guys that have $3500 (total, counting car) invested. Also, these "look what I did" threads conveniently don't tell you everything they spent or the trouble they went to by any means...nor tell you how the car behaves in daily use.

LOL. Have you ever seen what a engine swapped S13 (or 14) actually weighs on a scale? A typical one with, say 18" staggered wheels, a SR swap, Z brakes and LSD will often weigh well over 3200+. That doesn't even count the ones with seemingly mandetory subs, body kit, etc. Additionally even if you start with a base 240 in the 2850 range, a KA-T conversion will add at least 100 lbs, even if totally stock otherwise. So using weight as a justification is splitting hairs, at best.
But it's funny you would resort to the "weight argument" when you were considering a V8 swap initially. That is usually what the RX7 guys say when justifying an FD over a Z32 (where they actually have a point to some extent). Either way, even if a perfect 240 scenario as you describe occured (without a dozen complications and additional expenses) and it would then "crush" a Z32, it would still look and drive like a $1500 240. It's all about priorities I guess.
all i have to say is i didnt want to argue but since were now talking about a 300zx tt and not a n/a, that 3k-5- is now up to 7-9k. cant really find any good tt with low miles on them, i mean you can find a tt for around 5 or 6 but is going to have 130k plus and not be very reliable. so this thread needs to be just done with

Looks like your computer has had a processor swap too, lol.
Any way you slice it, a Z32 (NA )is an excellent looking/driving car that can be had for $3000 and up and is plenty fast enough. $6000 will buy a reliable TT...much more so that a DIY 240 swap in many cases. Check any reporting agency...TT's are quite reliable particuarly when based on chronological averages. But I thought weight was your justification to booger up a 240. Now you are trying to argue cost, when in reality you will have thousands in your 240 while hoping it will all work out. What's next? Yep, thread is dead.

hey everyone!!!!!! i recently bought a 96 q45 it runs amazing, i have only replaced the valve cover gaskets its near 170000 and so far so no big problems ........ but i do have a question would the speed sensor make it flash any tranny codes because thats what i have herd

Man where are you? We went to 5 different "you Pull-it" yards and all the Q's they had were GUTTED. We were expecting to grab the little things like the glove box etc, but none of them had anything worth grabbing (except the stock stereo to hold us over until we get the new one). None of them were active Q's either, but I guess that's the lock ness of Q's anyways. I have access to parts at cost and they still want $300 for an active Q, 1st gen powersteering pump. I'm in Portland, by the way, if that makes any difference.

As of Saturday, Oct 23rd 2009, I am now an owner of a 2005 Q45. I am so excited :-) I have been searching for the right car since April and I finally have found the right one for my preferences and my budget. During my search I ran across your forums and I have been impressed with what I have read so far. Now as an owner, I am ready to join the forum officially. As a newbie Q45 owner I look forward to the discussions and advice from this forum. :-) Sincerely, Q45_fan_98101
