Post

After many years of owning a 2 S14's, 1 S13, 260z, and a 510 I've finally started my SR swap. Bought a white pignose fastback with 150,000 on body for $450 that has a blown headgasket or fried piston. Don't know which one and don't care. Basically rust free and has new (Looks good from 10 feet) type paint job. Going to take the KA24E out after typing this so if there are any KA kids out there that need something e-mail me at [email protected] otherwise its gonna get tossed in about a week.

Link to my Photobucket where all my pics of car and engine rebuild are/will be.http://s191.photobucket.com/home/xiaphin/index

Will update this later tonight/tomorrow with more pics and explain how I decided to do the swap with this car. And also what I have done already and plan on doing in the next 3 months.

Engine and transmission are ready to be pulled except it decided to rain today b4 I could work on it. Yeah yeah I know its outside but will be inside once I sell or move my 510 project car.

So heres the lowdown on how I decided to Finally do my SR swap. Had this 95 S14 stolen before I did my engine swap. While I had this S14 I came across a deal where I spent $2000 nd got a SR20, 1991 Fastback, Body-Kit, Racing seats, 2 KA24DE engines and trans and some other crap. Gave the S13 to a buddy of mine whos SR20 powered S14 just got totaled. He gave me some of the parts listed below. Was building my SR while I had the S14 which was back in 2003-04. Will post pics of the engine tomorrow or sometime.

Just been fully repainted, painted all interior to match exterior color with black highlights. 18x8 and 18x9 SSR Integral A2's. Stillen bars front and rear, Eibach drop springs, Suspension Techniques Sways, Black leather rear seats, alpine interior speakers-tweeters, nd Kicker Solobaric 15" Sub. Car was stolen with SSR's on the front and some 18x10 rims in the back.

Got raped by insurance company eventhough had all receipts Got a 260z for $600 bucks drove it for a while before it blew up. Went to Japan for 6 weeks and bought another 95 240sx when I got back with my insurance money. Traded the 240sx for a 2-Door 1971 Datsun 510. Some pics of it 20 yrs before I got it, how i remember seeing it as a young kid.

Drove it for a while then got it soda blasted and primered, sitting in garage still. Many pics of it here - http://s191.photobucket.com/al...asted/

Got a call from my friend that I traded my 240sx for the 510 saying he knew about a S13 that could be have pretty cheap. So I ended up buying it for $450. Thats about it in a nutshell.

Now thats out of the way I'll be updating this frequently in the beginning cause I've had my SR since 2003.

So like I said before Ive had this SR since 2003. First thing I did was buy drifting.com SR20DET rebuild DVD. Broke it all down, layed out everything nice and neat then cleaned it up. No pics of it before I cleaned all the nasty oil and dirt off. It cleaned up really well.

Planned on installing forged pistons and rods until I saw that the factory hone marks were still visible in all four cylinder walls. Grit in bottom is from scraping off hold head gasket.

More things to come tomorrow.

Adding to the photos I posted yesterday. Ordered a full gasket set, ARP head studs, BC valvesprings and titanium retainers from phase2motorsports. Couple months before that I got a great deal on ebay for $600. GREX headgasket, Greddy valvesprings, rocker arm stoppers, oil pan, and turbo elbow. The valvesprings used were the Greddy with the BC retainers.

Installed new front and rear main seals along with front cover.
Image

Next cleaned up the head best I could. Lapped all intake and exhaust valves by applying lapping compound then simply rotating valve creating contact between its seat. Inexpensive way to clean up the contact surface of valve and head. Replaced all the valve stem seals.
Image

Now it was time to install the valvesprings and retainers. Didnt have a spring compressor and didnt want to rent/buy one so guess what. I made one out of some casters and scrap materials laying around. Used some holes in the head to bolt my apparatus to and also clamped it to the workbench so it wouldnt move. Takes alot of force to compress these bad boys. Worked really well. Little tricky to get the clips that hold valve in place so an extra hand helps.
Image

Next will be pics of my HKS 264 in 264 ex install, rocker and rocker arm stopper install. And an update on the car itself.

Yeah it did but at least my SR wasnt in it yet.

Got engine and trans out the other day. Dash is out, harness is out, car looks like a train wreck. Dash support bar had some rust on it so I'm getting it powder coated while its out along with some other parts. Sending harness off to wiring specialties since I think its worth the $178 dollars for me not to mess with it. Using a Z32 ignitor chip and Z32 MAF. Took diff out to swap in my 91 300zx NA VLSD but found out I needed different output shafts. Also started to mount my intercooler. Could only find one pics of my cams installed taken with my old phone, will take a better pic tomorrow.

Will post pics when Nico fixes the [IMG] bug associated with the new forum update.

Took stuff to powder coat, pulled 5-speed driveshaft and 5-speed lower harness off parts car, test fit intercooler and cut bumper support today. Bumper needs some grinding before completion and plan on making the pignose nostrils functional. Here are the pics I didnt post yesterday cause of the changeover. Sending harness off tomorrow. Wont be any updates till later next week. Side note my PowerFC and Commander, Greddy Boost controller, and intercooler piping should be here next week.

haha yeah I'd like to think so... just taking what I've learned from past builds, helping out friends, and reading the forums. Nothing ever goes according to plan I'm bound to mess up on something, just hope its not major. Will say that I understand why this car blew up... previous owner couldnt even thread a bolt in without stripping it. Found 6-8 stripped bolts when taking the dash out. :o

Not much done on car over weekend since I had to get a design ready for rapid prototyping but did manage to mail out turbo to Forced Performance. Did finally weld in cover for IC cutout in bumper support, picked up stuff from powder coat, got my solid diff bushings and NA 300zx rear hubs in mail.

Image

Image

Color scheme is going to be UPS Brown and UPS grey, subtle nothing over the top. Looks better in sunlight... i guess it was camera shy. Gonna have to get some samples of the brown with gloss killer before getting my wheels and valve cover done. Plan on carrying scheme into interior with dash and main panels being brown accented by the dark grey. Should look good since carpet is already light grey. Maybe grey suede inserts in the door panels?
Image

Apparently I need to get bolts from an S14 to use these. E-bay seller didnt bother to mention that.
Image

Almost forgot ordered these today (its gonna be christmas in April):

ACT 6 PUCK (SPRUNG HUB) CLUTCH KIT - CHECK
GREDDY FULL AUTO TURBO TIMER (BLACK) - CHECK
Energy Suspension Hyperflex Polyurethane Bushing Kit - Gonna use solid sub-frame bushings instead of ones in this kit - CHECK
Megan Racing 89-98 240SX Engine Mount Kit - CHECK
ISIS 5-lug hubs for front - CHECK

Not much going on with the car right now just playing the waiting game. Wire harness being started on today maybe get it end next week or second week in May, same goes for the turbo. Found a needle in a haystack yesterday getting my hands on one of the last Defi BF Series (Imperial) Boost Gagues in white  . FRSport had one left on shelf, BF Series has been discontinued in Imperial units :wtf2: . So I'll have boost, oil pressure, fuel pressure, and water temp in complete set.

Heres some photos of the Z32 brakes I'll be putting on the car, came off a 1990 parts car I had several years back. Glass beaded them and powdercoated them flat black almost a year ago. Rebuilt all 4 calipers, with Nissan rebuild kits. Could only get rear caliper rebuild kit from RHD Japan.

First thing I did was buy drifting.com SR20DET rebuild DVD.
How hard was it to rebuild with the DVD? I am planning on rebuilding after summer. Full OEM gasket set and what not. I've never broken down a motor though so any suggestions? Good thread man. WHITE SR HB's!!! We should make a club lol.

DVD is very helpful even for someone like me who has some experience (Rebuilt VG30DE, L24's, and an old Ford 390 in high school). I didn't do a complete rebuild as my bottom end looked like it had less than 15,000 miles on it. DVD goes over many technical areas like main bearing, pistons, and rocker shim tolerances. Highly recommend to anyone that hasn't broken down/ rebuilt an engine before. Suggestions would be: be organized, take lots of pictures, bag and label all nuts and bolts, read the FSM, if you aren't sure search or ask someone, last but not least get dirty and bleed. If your not bleeding your doing something wrong.

Thanks man. Hopefully it will be moving along alot faster once all my stuff gets here. Yeah why isnt there a white fastback club :wtf2: To complete my diff swap I decided to buy 92'-94' J30 rebuilt axles from Autozone, since i cant find any output shafts (in the Nissan world known as slide flange assembly) or J30 axles on any forum/internet. Only 77 bucks each with core, 129 without. We'll see how observant they are when i Give them NA Z32 axles for my cores. Speaking of stuff heres some things I've been waiting for.

On a side note, for those who need FMIC piping I found that courtesyparts.com has a FMIC piping kit for only $85.00!!! Lots of other stuff available too. I've purchased many parts from them before but never clicked on the JDM page. :frown: http://www.courtesyparts.com/240sx-part ... _5890.html

Thanks for the response. Yah I don't know if my bottom end needs rebuilding or not. The car came close to overheating a few times but my radiator I've never touched since I filled it. I'm just going to get a full oem gasket set and replace internal parts as necessary. So the DVD does cover rebuilding the bottom end if I have too?

haha thanks. thats my buddy MP's cousin or somethin and the turbo he planned to put on his RB26DET 350z swap, before he sold the engine. He decided to buy another 3rd Gen RX-7 instead. Heres a vid of his twin-turbo 350z before he sold it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHk0yKdCd1U

Not much progress on car still waiting for many many parts. Harness did ship out yesterday so thats good. Thanks to OM3GA's build thread I'm selling my Greddy elbow and getting the PBM Flex Cobra instead. Did find some vids of another Fastback S13 with very similar setup. Gives me a better idea on what I can expect power and speed wise. Some parts in my build are higher quality than this guys but nonetheless here ya go.

Didnt know christmas was on May 6th but it must be. My cat Nismo finally showed up after a few days missing!!! Harness came back from Wiring Specialties now the work can begin. I'll be installing alot of these items this weekend!!! Got my clutch, front hubs, hyperflex bushings, apexi intake for Z32 MAF, Greddy Turbo Timer, hot pipe with HKS flange, Defi BF Series Imperial boost gauge, and ISIS dual fans with aluminum mounting shroud. This is a brand new item from ISIS. Their not selling any more fans by themselves. This kit uses the same aluminum mounting shroud as Mishimoto but is $50 cheaper. Jeff Ricca over at 240sxmotoring helped me get this item. Asked him how many CFM's each fan flows and he said 960 or 990 CFM's (Cant remember which). Will be doing a review and install on this item. Next post will actually have items on the car!!!

Pressure washed engine bay, painted FMIC and engine brackets, removed that god awful wing and rear wiper (anybody wants these they are for sale just shoot me an offer) Changed the rotors and pads on my Z this weekend. Installed Ichiba front hubs as well, not a direct replacement. Mounted Z32 calipers and confirmed they are the 30mm type, but caliper needs to be stepped out like an 1/8 inch or so. Also test fit my Z32 rims and Theres not enough clearance, its about a 1/4 inch away from the strut. Definitely will hit with tires on so I need to put on some wheel spacers to remedy this issue. 1/2" max and wheel will be flush with fender. Here is my encounter with the Ichiba front hubs, not that impressed.

So I got the Ichiba front hubs for my S13 and tried installing them yesterday. From what I understand they are a direct replacement with no modding necessary. Well... cleaned up the spindle put them on tightened the nut and guess what, hard as hell to spin almost impossible really. Looked at the stackup of the Ichiba compared to OEM and noticed two things. One the difference in snap rings that this 3 YEAR OLD thread on Zilvia.net discusses (cant see the pics to see if mine prchased last week still has the snap ring in question), also the bearing seal wasnt seated enough, not allowing the hub to pull up all the way. Searched net on this problem found that thread (only thread annywhere). So i swapped the rings, tried putting it on and still no good. Found a 1-7/8 socket and pressed the seal below the bearing surface that makes contact with the spindle. And woila they went on like they should have out of the box. Heres pics of my encounter. If those who have installed these on their car could confirm the snap ring that would be great. In my mind I find it hard to believe a company would still be using incorrect parts after 3 YEARS!!!

No clearance with the Ichiba seal - like 1/64 - 1/32 too high

Well today was a big day in the parts department. Received my FP (Forced Performance) Big 28 Turbo and it looks badass. Sleeper turbo since the housing are a T25 but its bored out to for the largest T28 compressor and turbine wheels available. Its not ball bearing but does have their heavy duty thrust bearing system. They definitely cleaned the crap out of this thing  Should have full boost around 2800-3000 RPM. Also got my Stance LX+ Coilovers from Zilvia member slideways_13, braided brake lines from AGP, Nismo clutch fork pivot, and Apexi N1 Dual Exhaust. Removed rear axles after having to drill cotter pin out of passenger side (damn that thing was rusty) Gave my 3/4" electric impact gun a workout to remove the axle nut, of course the other side came off not problem. Be putting more parts on this week if it doesnt rain like its supposed to until next Thursday. Pics :chuckle:

Painted my friends carbon fiber Nismo front end for his 350z on Friday (Was completely trashed and has been brought back from the dead). Pulled the subframe out other day along with rear suspension. Used about a half gallon of PB Blaster soaked down then pressure washed trans tunnel, fender wells, undercarriage, and subframe / rear suspension. Removed all of the OEM bushings in the rear and subframe with the help of my small Oxy-Acetylene torch. Still have to clean out all the rubber that wasn't burned out. There are some rust spots on the subframe and in the engine bay and will be fixed with Rustmort. Added full build specs to first post.

Got some things done on the car over past couple days. Removed all the left over rubber bushings (using this badass wire brush) from both rear spindles , RLCA's, and the subframe after burning them out. Then cut out metal sleeves with a sawzall on spindles and subframe. Took subframe to Powdercoat. Glass beaded the rear spindles and painted them Chassis Black. Pressed bushings and sleeves into the rear spindle with some old headbolts and sockets. Also removed the RLCA's ball joints with the help of my friends tools, a Greenlee 767 Hydraulic Knockout Puch with the punch reversed and a 3/4" drive 1 and 3/4" socket we ground down so it would sit flush on the control arm. Going to glass bead then paint them chassis black. Purchased some Moog 89 Sentra front ball joints for my RLCA's. Also modified my front spindle by drilling and tapping it to accept a NA Z31 dust shield. Had originally planned to use these on my 510. Countersunk the shield and spindle for flat head to give the hubs extra clearance when fully seated. Heres all the pics:

Nice work! Did you think about upgrading to 300zx (z32) rear knuckles? They're 8 lbs lighter each side, because they're made of aluminum.

Funny you should say that. About halfway through the bushing install I said to myself, "Ya know wouldnt it be nice if these were aluminum instead of cast iron" To answer your question, No I didnt consider it because I thought about it too late. Maybe on the next one. Removing and cleaning engine crossmember and FLCA, installing new ball joints, painting fender wells, and undercoating trans tunnel over the weekend (Hopefully)

My PBM Flex Cobra Downpipe came in today along with these badass shirts.
